- Kentucky basketball lit it up during a scrimmage against La Familia last night.
On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe discusses Kentucky basketball's 96-79 win over the TBT La Familia team. Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats had an offensive explosion led by Jaxson Robinson, Amari Williams, Kerr Kriisa and Andrew Carr. The defense was spotty at times but there should be absolutely no concern for UK considering the team they were up against.

I think they have the shooting to be in any game. It’s all going to come down to playing together as a team and their defense. I don’t see offense being a problem at all. It seems like they have been getting along so far so hopefully that means good things to come. Going to be a fun year for sure.

Offensively they will be great. Potential weak spot will be defense. I expect UK to challenge for SEC championship and NCAA Tournament championship. Because of the veteran roster, they should be good right from the beginning of the schedule.
Uk doesn't have a chance to win national title.

Yeah, I don't know where that came from. Obviously Lance heard grumblings somewhere, but I never did. I was hoping he would commit right after I heard Pope was hired and everything I read and heard from others was pretty much the same.
Some fans wanted to temper expectations because Jaxson came off the bench in a 6th man role, but he was still BYU's best scorer.

Offense looked elite. Defense looked like middle school JV. Bit worried about the defense. Still very excited for what’s to come
It’s July. Anybody worrying about either side of the ball is just not worth it right now. This is a scrimmage and those guys are still feeling each other out. Take both sides of the scrimmage with a grain of salt. As good as those players were in their prime they are not the same players either. Now the physicality they still have and it’s good to see the guys not back down from that and are able to bang with them.
The last thing I'm worried about, is defense. Butler, Oweh and Williams are elite defenders at their positions, all 3 are highly decorated defenders.
Additionally, this team is senior laden, they have been playing defense at the highest level for 3 and in some cases, 4 years.
Unlike the farm system we saw under Cal, where it was all about the draft, Pope doesn’t have to spend half the season teaching entitled toddlers how to walk and chew gum at the same time.
Kriisa is gonna start.

I think we’re stuck with a bunch of scrubs. They didn’t even try to play defense. A decent college team would have beaten us by 25 points. Very disappointing!

Hey Lance...are you sure Butler needs to be our starting pg?. He's a low percentage 3 point shooter and has never been a true pg. Kriisa was lead guard on a final 4 Arizona team.
Butler is by far the best at PG right now. Krissa is a solid back up at that position but you don’t want Krissa being the main ball handler.
Two final four PGs. I'm good either way.

Butler was the starting pg on a national title runner up team and he's an elite defender. Kriisa is too much of a wildcard, Butler is the guy.

If winning a title is your goal in today’s game, you better be old. The game is too physical, too analytical and too advanced for freshmen dominated teams.
Cal is a smart guy, the fact that he kept hammering that one-and-done nail knowing it was not the recipe for winning titles, tells you where his priorities were.
I'll never understand why he got off on getting players drafted that were getting drafted no matter where they went yo school and the players thst he actually MIGHT have helped, he rarely talks about.

I remember the strength difference when I was 23 instead of 18. My 18 year old self had ZERO chance against the 23 yr old version, totally unfair fight. Your nerves even grow quite a bit until your 27-30, and that makes your muscles stronger itself which is why you see so much more power in 30 plus year olds!!

You could always tell he had instructed his prized freshman babies to not get hurt and not play too hard in the NCAA tournament games to protect their draft status. Absolute garbage for the school he's at, it couldn't have been more obvious he was about his social circles, not winning titles.
I'm really not speaking with blue glasses on when I say this, I think Pope's team is going to clobber Cows, because this is how it's gone the last decade we have watched. This is the exact type of team that gives Calipari the worst fits and trouble, the strong upperclassmen and changing defenses and the 1-3-1 zone especially, works every time against Cow because he never teaches or practices it.
How are we supposed to believe Calipari is going to have such a deep fundamental result changing epiphany just that quick?
I guarantee you he's still going to be using Z as a back to the basket power center🤣 poor kid.
@@johnnycorn7225 I can't believe so many UK fans didn't see what Cal was doing. I realized it many years ago, but up until the 20/21 season, he was at least trying to win, he was just doing it the wrong way.
Starting with the 21 team, he realized he had to make promises to get highly ranked kids. It didn't matter that they weren't any good, it didn't matter that they weren't ready and it didn't matter that the pieces didn't fit, he needed to be "the one-and-done guy".
He turned UK into a farm system for the NBA, then made it worse by talking down to BBN WHILE he was losing games at a historic rate.
Additionally, he was never a good coach. He knows 1 offense and 1 defense. The extreme talent he has from 09 through 2020 was good enough to hide him, but post 2020 talent was much lower grade. Combine that with Cal's bull headed and predictable coaching and you have a recipe for disaster.
Just the fact that he only has 1 title with the extreme amount of talent he had come through UK's doors, should be embarrassing, but he's a narcissist, so he justifies each failure.
The funny thing is, Arkansas fans think they're getting the 2009 version of John Calipari. They're in for a big surprise.
