Swedish revanchism eventually led to the Russo-Swedish war of 1741-1743, in witch Sweden tried to regain the lands lost, but instead ended up having to cede even more of Finland as a result of military defeat

Sweden actually had more battles with Russia after that war too. More than one more. Our last war with them was in 1808 I think. And at least we had more great victories after the great northern war like: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Svensksund

Peter of Russia played both of his strongest rivals against eachother. He allied himself with Poland and started a war against Sweden, then, to buy time to build his own army up after severly underestimated the Swedes, he convinced Poland to stay in the war and basically tie up all of Swedens militrary might in one place - far from his own geographical goals.
Peter may have been an a-hole, but he was smart and devious to the point that he achieved every goal he set out with.
Sweden caused so many problems for Poland that Poland became weak and disorganized, while the Swedish Empire shrunk considerably, while Russia gained a lot of ground in the Balic sea.
Shame history played out this way, had the other European powers realized what a problem Russia would become in the future, it is conceivable they would have helped Sweden control the eastern part of the Baltic, as it would have benefitted all if Russia was locked out of this sea.

So, to examine the conflict. I believe that the Russians and the Swedes radically differed in their approach to the war. The Swedes relied more on tactics, while the Russians relied more on strategy. Indeed, the Swedes had no equal on the battlefield, they had the highest quality and most well-trained army. At the same time, the Russian army on the battlefield left much to be desired. They lack training and wasnt always well armed. In addition, at the beginning of the war, the Russian army was still fighting in the style of the mid-17th century.
However, Peter played the chess game brilliantly. While Charles was waging war against Augustus II, Peter I was reorgonazing not only the entire Russian army and navy, but also the entire system of the Russian state. At the same time, he gradually captured fortresess in Ingria and Livonia (where he founded St. Petersburg). Then in order for Charles to stay in Poland longer, he forced Augustus to stay in the war with the Swedes with threats, bribes or fresh troops. When Charles finally went to war against Russia, Peter used the scorched earth strategy, which greatly weakened the Swedish army. And only when he had complete superiority over the Swedes, he decided to attack, which resulted at the Battle of Poltava and a complete destruction of the Sweedish army. Then, immediately after the victory, he let all the European powers know about the defeat of Sweden, which made it possible to revive the coalition against Sweden and eventually finally defeat it. A brilliantly played game by Peter.
