Jeep YJ gets new shackles and little more lift

  • With the new wheels and tires the Jeep YJ needs a little more clearance. (One change always leads to other changes.) I decided to go to Boomerang shackles with greaseable bolts. The 5.25" shackles will add some lift over the original 4" stock shackles.
    Got the lift I needed and vastly improved ride quality.

    I installed those same shackles on my '93 YJ about 3 years ago to allow bigger tires.
    I haven't had any issues with them, even thru some mild off-roading. Good video.

    Thank you for the video! You told me everything I needed to know to do my yj! I think my shackles are seized as well and giving me a rough ride

      StarkReality how long did it take you to do both front and rear?

    • @StarkReality
      @StarkReality  5 років тому

      WaiteProductions - removal of the front was pretty quick. The back removal took several hours. The install goes really fast.

    You don't have to cut the back bolts on the old shackles. Just loosened up the gas tank it will move far enough to get the bolts off. This is what I did to change my shackles.

    • @StarkReality
      @StarkReality  5 років тому

      That probably would work but I did not want to mess with the heavy Warn gas tank skid which is tough to work with itself.

      @@StarkReality I loosened my gas tank just in case something goes wrong and I have put them back on.

      You could also simply take of the front bolt of the spring and swing it back..then loosen the back bolt.

    great video. Question - Did the springs settle after installing the shackles or is it still 1" of lift? Thank you

    • @StarkReality
      @StarkReality  9 місяців тому

      The springs have settled over time but they would settle even without the shackles.

    Great video...does the Jeep drive any differently, besides the smoother suspension feel? I want to do the same, but I’ve heard that the steering feel and handling gets worse after doing this.

      What size wheels/tires do you have on there? The only list you have is these shackles? Any rubbing?

    • @StarkReality
      @StarkReality  6 років тому

      One of the big reasons to keep the shackle lift small is to not effect the steering. I just went on an offroad trip and the steering was just fine.

      StarkReality awesome thanks so much. I’ll be doing this and hope that I can fit 33 x 10.50R15 tires

      Wheeling this weekend we just barely rubbed the plastic so it went well. I have 2.5 inches of suspension lift, 1 inch shackle lift and 1 inch body lift. Any less than that and you will rub for sure.

    Best mod I made was to remove the flares, trim the sheet metal and move the flares back and up. It's easy and the benefit is huge.

    Did you feel you need to put a sye kit on or lengthen the driveshaft? Going from 31's to 33's and only have a 2.5" spring lift. Looking at a 1" body and similar shackles

    • @StarkReality
      @StarkReality  5 років тому +1

      I did do an sye and new drive shaft when I had the 2.5" lift and 1" body lift with the tummy tuck. Doing the shackle lift was not enough to warrant a longer shaft thankfully.

    Great video! I have a question though. How did you orientate the front shackles? Did you follow the instructions where it says to have the long dog leg facing down and out or did you put them the other way like the back? And have you had any rubbing or clearance issues the way you did it? Thank you.

    • @StarkReality
      @StarkReality  6 років тому

      I followed the instructions so the back and front are different. I have not had any issues, they are running great.

    I think on all the bolts and nuts you should have cleaned good and put blue thread locker on them.

    You don’t have to cut a damn thing, provided you aren’t a neanderthal.
