I thought the main villain was probably one of the best that I've seen in any anime. He not only tried to wreck the system but also questioned the hero's motives and ideals as well, and I actually kind of agreed with his ideas if not his methods.
I agree, he really was a great villain, the series wasn't boring because of him and he was heck strong and smart
overall even tho he was crazy, I thought he was really interesting
won't forget him, tho the way he died was stupid, I expected him to be smarter as he escaped death many times
Animefan13 there wasn't much for him to do
Shogo makishima is not just interesting because he's smart, charismatic and a skill fighter.
He's like an individual human from our modern world fighting against a world where individuality is stripped.
@@animefan133 I think he much rather accept death by the hands of Kogami, a person with his own "free will" and an opponent he acknowledged rather than live on as a cog in a machine together with the society he despises the most.
It was indeed quite an anticlimactic death compared to other beloved anime antagonists but definitely one of the most philosophical ones. That's what makes him so good.
@E.T. Emmanuel guess murdering innocent people is heroic in your book mate
I think Psycho-Pass is one of the best underrated animes ever
aleah marie it was my first anime never forghetti
I agree.. I think this review rates it appropriately though, simply because the bar is pretty high for sci fi anime.
aleah marie underrated??? it's very booming in japan tho, and it's a well known anime imo
It's not underrated.
Xiran Wang compared to the shitty Sword art online...it is underrated
I love Psycho-pass season 1 to pieces. This isn't the typical action-filled anime. Instead, it digs deep into the psychological aspect, which I love. The famous shounen anime like Naruto, Bleach, etc are at times are thrilling and emotional, but I find that they lack the dark psychological twist that make me rethink life. The characters have distinctive personalities that set them apart; most of all, they just feel so real, like human beings, not anime characters. The music here are just absolutely fitting and amazing. I ended up downloading many songs and listen to them on repeat. This is my most favourite anime as of late.
+Blah Smith did you watch sean two, what did you think?
TheInfinitystar1 Yeah, I have seen Naturo and Bleach.
Blah Smith .....I think we both know i was talking about season 2
TheInfinitystar1 Oh lol. Season 2 is like it was made by someone else. Well, actually it WAS made by someone else. It didn't connect to season 1 almost at all. Very disappointed. Im going to pretend season 2 didn't happen.
+Blah Smith and then you feel depressed as fuck when everyone dies
I got so affected by this show that I find episode 11 to be one of the most shocking I've ever seen. You could actually see fear in Akane's eyes and it just left me wondering how the hell are they gonna get this guy?
Same here. I was glad they did it though, because of what it made the villain. I'd have to say that he's probably the best villain in any anime I have watched so far. But I haven't watched that many, so my opinion might not be that valid.
Is it bad that I wanted Makishima to win?
nope, he was way more interesting and charismatic than the rest of the cast (other than kogami)
@@Joshywoshy24 well, makishima and kogami are the main characters
@@golfer435 In our hearts, yeah. But the main character has always been Akane, aka, the Mary-Sue. At least they did Kogami justice in Pyscho-Pass 3.
Nope, I want to see him throw those nasty brains in a grinder. Is it just me?
@@6ixlxrd
How is Akane a Mary-Sue?
She screwed up at her first job and struggled for a while.
I admit, that she is portrayed as pretty smart and talented (blessed with an exceptional hue), but I wouldn't refer to her as a Mary Sue since she has character development/ progression, fails on several occasions (at the start of her job, saving her friend Yuki and when trying to stop Kogami from killing Makishima) and now in PP 3 even sits in Prison.
Reading the comment section and watching the video seems so weird to me...
I love the main actor Akane, starting from the first episode, so much. She isn't someone you necessarily identify with, but one you can relate to and understand through the whole series, who develops and doesn't stagnate, but also keeps her personality. And those drowsy eyes, they're awesome!
Speak fax brother. I love Akane so much and what can be better than an unique main character? Life would be so boring if you always seek for people with similar mindset instead of looking out who are drastically different than you.
You know what my favorite part of this series was? When the main villain and one of his henchmen are conversing with one another after releasing dozens of anti-Cybel system helmets into the general public about what kind of science fiction dystopia they're living in and creating, referencing multiple different authors and the type of work they've generally created and how it relates to the situation in the show. That was amazing.
psycho pass got less than aot.... what the fuck...?
*****
that's so funny right there you got me
+I love Anal AOT is better than Psycho Pass, but i still love both shows
+Jenny What Psycho Pass 1 is literally a better written and looking anime.
Okay, the better looking part is subjective but still.
Nereus Literally what
+I love Anal At least attack on titan wont fuck up with its season 2 like psycho pass did.
Why is it that so many people don't like Urobuchi, it's strange that one minute they are bitching about the usually; Harrem, Fanservice, school and Moe.
Then a Post Cyberpunk series comes along with it's own art style, no fanservice, not set in a school, nearly all the characters are adluts and it's not a harrem. And a wave of complaints come in about his characters and the way he writes.
That's funny, cause I was thinking the same thing. If you put those 2 opinions together, then many people apparently don't like anything.
People give Urobuchi too much credit. Yes, he doesn't write harem, sexual fanservice heavy shows about school and moe, but that doesn't make his shows good. He doesn't really have a talent for writing characters for the most part and while he has good ideas, the execution is usually rather poor. Madoka is a deconstruction but it's so IN YOUR FACE about being a deconstruction that you forget to actually analyse it. The characters in Madoka are poor, just archetype moe girls for the most part(Also dark magical girl shows existed before Madoka, so it's not like that was an original idea to begin with). Fate/Zero's spirits are just historical and mythological figures, he didn't write them, he just used them. Psycho-Pass had themes, but they were never explored and as such the series lacked depth or complexity. Just because a series takes itself seriously and isn't about school moe girls doesn't automatically make it good. Urobuchi isn't a bad writer, but I wouldn't exactly call him good either.
Keten Zima From a highly analytical standpoint, I can see those arguments. However, when comparing to other anime that have aired in recent years, I think Urobuchi's stories are worth mentioning, especially to new comers in anime.
***** They are good introductory anime yes. I will agree to that. However saying that they are good compared to anime in recent years.. Kind of says a lot about modern anime doesn't it. Not that we don't get good anime anymore, we do, it just seems more rare these days. Every season is 80% school comedy moe. Drives me nuts.
For me, it's because I've found that he relies a lot on shock value. Saya no Uta comes to mind.
Still waiting for that Brotherhood review
certainly deserves a review for those that have not seen it
Jimmy McNulty too long
magno172 whats to long?
It's pointless, it makes just as much sense as reviewing Attack on Titan, I imagine if he wants to make a quick buck he'd probably review something like that.
***** he reviewed attack on titian
I thought you would have given in it a 8.22 out of 10 so that you could give it a 9.22 if it gets a 2nd season... -oh wait-
Fucking lol
Also if AOT gets another season and it isn't as good as the first the rating will go down. and also I can't see Arkada giving something a 9+ it just seems unnatural. Like that Haruhi movie score is the only thing that has broken that i believe.
I understand the joke that you're trying to make, but it makes absolutely no sense considering a second season of Psycho-Pass was confirmed long before Arkada probably even started making this review.
Zidane AoT is getting a second season. It was recently announced that it is in pre-production. This means that his score for the first season is, in fact, 9.22. How good the second season is doesn't matter, it existing is all that matters.
2nd season confirmed for Fall 2014.
In Psycho Pass, the villian has a Kira/Light Yagami vibe, most the main characters do.
+MegaFreddy25
Also, the villain has a Johan Leibert vibe to him. If you have watched Monster, you'll understand
*****
Exactly. He is the smartest villain I have seen in anime too
+TheFanboySlayer too bad Johan had a super lame reveal of his beginning it kind of ruined him for me. like really he is so messed up because it was his sister who went through the hell but he made that his past. it kinda took a lot away from him for me personally.
+MegaFreddy25 pretty much what drew me to Makishima from the get-go. he has a different sort of sympathetic backstory though...... he's probably clinically sociopathic, because he never feels any negative emotions committing his crimes. so you can tell the sybil system could only have worsened his personality disorder, which is what makes his character a tragic one.
and Light's tragedy is different - because he isn't a born sociopath. he feels guilt when he first starts using the Death Note. his tragedy lies in his descent into sadism and desperation.
I think Shogo is more like Yohan than Kira ,
*SPOILERS*
What made this show so enjoyable for me was Makishima. He is one of my personal favorite villains in anime. He reminded me of Johan Liebert (Monster), but with more appeal. I found his calm, collected demeanor to be a high-point in the show; and though I was perfectly ok with his death, I am somewhat worried for the 2nd season without him. I can already guess that the 2nd season will be aimed at the removal of the Sibyl system, but I am a bit concerned... :/
agreed wished he didnt die
Bill Haze Well, I am ok with his death, I just fear that the show will not be as good without him.
If it helps at all, the villain of the second season makes Makishima look like a pacifist in comparison.
Logan Hollis That does not really help actually. It was not just his ability to kill, it was his overall character and persona. He was intelligent, philosophic, and turned people into horrible criminals with just his words. I thought he strayed away from many of the classic villain archetypes. Being honest a lot of villains kill a lot of people, but not a lot of villains accomplish this using civil minded civilians.
Cameron Wallace Not only that but Makashima is in many ways right. His methods are horrible, but his opposition to the Sybil-system is grounded in very valid arguments: Even before the great reveal ( you know which) I already felt that Makashima was right. Amazing how they not only explain that he has charisma, but actually mezmerise you himself.
I was really interested in Kagari's back story as well, and would have prefered seeing him get an episode the girl (can't remember her name.) I really wanted to see exactly how a five year old could get arrested as a latent criminal and how that affects someones growth.
And yes, Akane's eyes creeped the hell out of me too.
same it was a shame he died so early :'c well there is a short 5 chapter novel by one of the scriptwriters of Psycho-Pass, called "The Pursuer Kagari Shuusei" . it talks about his backstory, so you might want to check that out!! (translated version is available on tumblr)
also same omg her eyes looked so weird HAHA
So you could handle the gore in Psycho pass but not in Parasyte?? Wow
This is where I have to say I disagree.
Honestly, I really enjoy this series.
Psycho Pass has made to my top 3 fav anime.
But then again, maybe the reason why I love it is because I am a sucker for psychological stuff.
if you have any psychological anime to recommend pls do. I too love psychological stuff
monster and death note

Fate/Zero, Psycho Pass, Steins; Gate, Kara no Kyoukai movie series, Welcome to the N.H.K

Monster, Death Note, Gankutsuo: The Count of Monte Christo
i found it a little annoying that while they explored how the sybil system was pretty much evil and the antagonist pretty much the protagonist, they kinda said "eh, fuck it" at the end.
+Not Legato hahahahahahha well said.
+Not Legato Makashima was not a good person. his motivations for what he did were far more complex and well evil than simply wanting to save society from a corrupt system. and yeah, I at first didn't want to see the show due to the fact that Akane does nothing to stop it...fortunately I changed my mind due to eharing about Makashima and how awesome he is.
Plus, its not like Akane was too thrilled with letting the system continue, and its possible a third season will have them take down the Sibil System, hopefully
aceotaku i didn't bother with season 2 yet. the new character annoyed me too much.
speaking of which, in what way was makashima NOT all about the whole "look, this system is shit, amorally getting rid of it is what i'm here to do"? not like they gave him much else motive-wise.
Not Legato to put it as simply and concisely as I can, makashima has multiple reasons: he wants to take down the sibil system due to believing it weakens and undermines human will and integrity, but he also does it due to feeling alone due to the system seemingly not recognising him as even existing, so his goal is also a sort of revenge, and thirdly he does what he does because he genuinely IS a psychopath who finds enjoyment in hurting others. His motivation is far more compelx than "The sibil system is corrput and I msut do evil things to bring it down": he IS a very evil man who jsut happens to have a justified end goal
aceotaku i never really saw him as *evil*, per se, just really amoral, and overly ideological (the whole murder for teaching akane a lesson about free will).
Still saying:
All hail Urobuchi!
You're persistent, aren't you?
Is it a problem?
Exxorn
The Nino army is approaching! Also: Urobuchi writes amazing characters!
Exxorn Not at all. I'm following you after all.
Hail to the Butcher, baby!
I wish Nino would start making reviews of some shows, but it seems like he's not going to in the near future.
Also: Urobuchi is the conductor of the hype train! I expect much of Aldnoah zero
It distracted me how some of the female characters (particularly Akane) had bigger eyes than the male characters
That's normal in Anime.
David Lev normal in anime, but looking at the artist's most popular work (katekyo hitman reborn!) it's usually used for characters that are more "innocent" rather than gender
David Lev
Troll successful
There is more things that are bigger than those
*****
no, that's not true
Makashima is now in quindecim.
bruh
Despite this being my 3rd favorite anime of all time, behind Ergo Proxy and FMAB, I definitely see how arkada would give it an 8. I dunno, maybe I am just a sucker for psychological themes in anime. Still, I would have to say that some parts of the animation was absolutely fantastic, but I digress.
FMAB was good but the ending was too cliche. I prefered the ending of FMA instead. The movie that continued the ending was awesome as well.
The only ups FMAB had was it had lots of action and followed the manga( I never read the books). I didn't watch FMA for the action though!
bulletprooff1k I was the opposite, while i felt the ending of Brotherhood needed a little bit more, the whole other world thing and CoS just killed it for me, not to mention Dante was such a worse villain than Father. To each their own i guess.
bulletprooff1k any fma movie is shit. Stop
Jon Brown The only FMA movie I saw was the continuation of the FMA anime ending.
Once you watched a good amount of movies and anime's you start to get bored with the happy endings and cliches.
The ending of the FMA anime and the ending of the continuation movie of FMA was just refreshing.
***** absolutely. It's a well done Sci-fi series that offers enough unique elements to make it interesting.
Akane got the smug-as-fuck look in the thumbnail.
Kinda disappointed you didn't talk about the genius that is Makishima.
Season 2 didnt happen as far as im concerned
Raz1515i give s1 a 9.5, and s2 an 8
Deus Ex Machina nah give s1 a 10 and s2 a 4
Mistress Yuuki s2 was very good though...it just lacked Kogami
Deus Ex Machina Eh, it wasnt as good XD
***** Same XDD I actually never started it lol
Don't watch the Psycho-Pass 2. I mean, it wasn't that bad but it put shame to the first season (if you enjoyed Psycho-Pass)
I know right. Season 1 is AWESOME, Season 2 starts really well but goes *mehhhh wtf*.
Puts to shame it's a strong term can u explain why you think so.
The villains of both shows are very similar in their goals, however their methods of achieving that were different in such a way that made the two seasons feel different. Makishima was almost playing around with Sibyl and the police while Kamui was more straightforward. I just preferred the way Makishima did things, using calm criminals to prove a point like a game, rather than Kamui's way of using insane citizens to simply achieve his goal
Makishima had charisma and got people who wanted to commit crimes the ability to commit them. Kamui uses medicine and has a similar charisma ability except he gets them to commit crimes without them initially wanting to. I liked Makishima cause of all the literary references and he was very cool and intelligent. However I like his this guy is straightforward and shows a different way Makishima could have gone with it.
KATintheBLACK right on. I watched it today and boy was that the biggest mistake this year yet. Looking for a nail right now long enough to phisically erase it from my brain.
I'm going to be honest. When I first watched this Anime, I was annoyed of how Akane looked, mostly because of her face expressions and the eye lashes, to the point where I hated her.
This show is like ghost in the shell for casuals
It wasn't that much like Ghost in the shell
Raymond Medina Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is from 2006.
Raymond Medina I do know that, but I'm pretty sure Psycho-Pass is often compared to GITS: SAC, as that version of GITS delves far more into Section 9 and the whole "police team" thing.
But yes, my post was kinda dumb. My b.
What ?! I'm a big fan of GITS, but still, it's not because an anime is about police in the future that it's the same. The world is different, like, totally.
What you're saying is the same as telling someone to not watch Dune because it's like 2001 : A Space Odissey for casuals
Bullshit. Its the anime version of 1984 that's set in the future.
Shōgo Makishima = Top 5 antagonist.
Review Chihayafuru!!!!!!!!
Why do no one talk about Chihayafuru??? it's such a great sport/romance anime with extremely good characters and storytelling. I demand the otaku community pay attention to this hidden gem!
It was, in fact, Ghost in the Shell and Ergo Proxy that brought me to Psycho Pass.
Also will you do a review of Ergo Proxy?
It was Psycho Pass that led me to Ergo Proxy
:D Funny how it works.
Ugh, I started watching Ergo Proxy, but I gave up because I just couldn't take it. I hated the characters, they seemed so empty. I gave it 6 episodes before I gave up, does it get better?
CallMeEuphoria I love Ergo Proxy. RE-l and Pino are fantastic characters. What exactly didn't you like about them? O.o
CallMeEuphoria Hmm, if you didn't like it six episodes in, I dunno'...It gets better in some respects, but I watched Proxy for the atmosphere it created. If you didn't like it, it's better to leave it like that.
TheKazragore I don't know, I just wasn't able to form a connection with the plot and the characters. Maybe I should watch a couple of episodes more before I drop it completely.
*Shinsekai Yori* shows a utopian village system in a setting that looks like feudal Japan, no electricity, the only transport is boats, there are only oil lamps and the like. The twist? This is set 1000 years after the ancient civilization, which is the current us.
We start off with middle schooler in a school setting learning and there's a mystery element that some students disappear. Slowly this dystopian world is unraveled before you and realize that nothing is as it seems.
The hell does this have to do with Psycho- Pass? If we're going into sci-fi territory, I might as well present this hidden gem to the more mainstream crowd.
Hey, this is the same as the last one!
demo d is the best
GenoClysm It'sa Spaceu Dandy!
Raymond Medina I'll just see myself out.
WHAT A GREAT SMILE
Raymond Medina
A sparkly pony trap whit tentacles for eye balls......DUH!
i have got to say psycho pass first two openings are the best EVER. not only the art in them which are amazing but the songs are killer. 2nd, fairy tail first opening, and sao first opoening, then gurren lagann
I'm disappointed that Ark didn't share his personal opinions on Makishima Shogo's placement as a villian and really only mentioned him once for his english voice actor's portrayal of him. I wanted to know what he thought of him as an antagonist for the show because I personally thought he was great.
(I'm a bit surprised it didn't score a little higher, but what can you do. Hopefully some of the remaining questions will be answered in season 2, which I am EXTREMELY excited about :D)
Dostoyevsky in one of his books made the observation, "You never truely understand a society, until you see it from the bottom." He spent time in the siberian gulag of the Czar and survived with a crippling disease, epilepsy. To get a look at how it changed him, read his works before and after his time in the gulag.
fate zero review please
I just commented that 2 secs ago. God that is an amazing anime.
gigguk did a good review of it. I just really want a GR before the Stay Night remake
*****
If you're more into the Fate/Zero type of thing there isn't much point to watching Prisma Illya, as it's a spinoff magical girl series right down to the core.
With some yuri fanservice.
Arkada already claimed that it was a great anime.
ReadingsteinerZ wait Fate Zero or Prisma whatever because Prisma is just meh imo
*Personally I liked Ghost in the shell stand alone complex more than Psycho Pass*
I like your points on this video and you make very applicable critique to a lot of it's bits and bumps. However, i do not agree with the un-immersive world as i felt very invested in the universe they created, why or how you ask? Well that's simple. The scenes that captured me into the world were the parts where akane had to face off against shogo for the first time. The intensity of that scene was instantly captivating and really sold the world to me.
The second part was when shogo and his right hand man designed the psycho copier to replicate any nearby citizens psycho-pass. As we first get a glimpse of what it is capable of we see the masked man walk into a chemist and instantly start killing people, this of course rings a peculiar interest as to why the sibil system isn't detecting his hue. Later we see that same man brutally attack a poor defenseless woman out in the street with a hammer in front of hundreds of people, did they do anything? Not at all.
Those are what really sold me on the world and what it really is. The prophetic and philosophical ramblings of shogo also really helped to characterize the general theme of the world as well.
8.0 is a very reasonable score in my personal opinion i myself would give it an 8.9 but that's just me.
I JUST googled your First Reaction to this show. Tonight I noticed that Netflix had it, and was trying to decide on whether to watch it. So I was trying to find a review, and found your first reaction. Now, a few hours later, I went to UA-cam to see if you had uploaded a new video, and low and behold it is for Psycho Pass. I know its not that big of a coincidence, but I find it amusing that this show has been on my mind, I've searched for your take on it, and today of all days a full review is uploaded. Ps this review makes it seem much more appealing than your first reaction.
You're thumbnail is godly. I appreciate your hard work, even all the way back here you ain't slacking and it shows!
If you want other dystopian themed anime's I'd recommend majika madoka, ergo proxy, and shinsekai yori :D if you have suggestions please let me know too!
This would be in my top 5 list for sure maybe number 2 or 3 to be exact loved it so much!
This show reminds me of the game Deus Ex: Human Revolution mixed in with Ghost in the Shell. I really liked it.
Judge Dredd in the setting of Deus Ex with a team reminiscent of that from GiTS
I guess its because of Cyberpunk style.
GeeksOasis nah only the style of it but it would be an insult to compare this on an philosophical view point with deus ex human revolution. That one really made you think.
I read about this series when I looked up an article on Funimation's broadcast dubs. Because I was curious and because I hadn't checked out an anime in a while, I decided to check it out. I was absolutely MIND-BLOWN.
This was a series that really forced me to rethink about the difference between good and evil, as a lot of the characters, even the villain Makishima, weren't at all black and white. Three of the most memorable scenes were when Makishima slit Yuki's throat right in front of Akane, when Kogami and Makishima fought, and when Masaoka died trying to protect Ginoza, his son, the latter of which almost made me cry (and it takes A LOT for a show to do that to me).
I agree in that some characters like Yayoi and Kagari could have been developed more, and in the case of Yayoi, that one episode explaining her backstory seemed to interrupt the overall flow of the rest of the story, but since they were side characters, it wasn't a major issue to me. But the main characters DID get serious development in different ways. Akane went from being a clueless newbie in the beginning into a serious, hardened detective by the end, Ginoza went from being a strict and stoic Inspector to an emotional train-wreck demoted to Enforcer by the end, and Kogami went from being obedient pawn of the Sybil System into a vigilante/criminal.
I watched the dub version, and I think most of the voice actors did a phenomenal job. If I had to pick a favorite role, it would be a tossup between Josh Grelle as Ginoza and Robert McCollum as Kogami. The former was versatile, showing a variety of emotions ranging from anger to sadness extremely well, while the latter's voice screamed "I don't give a single fuck in the world," which I think fit Kogami's personality like a glove. Most of the side characters sounded perfectly fine, although I think Yayoi's voice actor Lindsay Seidel was a little wooden.
Overall, definitely a series worth watching; I would recommend it to anyone. I rate it 9.5/10.
Glad I saw this review. I was wandering about on Netflix today, swimming in a pool of woe over the lessened availability of "Mushi-shi" and "Baccano!", saw Psycho-Pass and said "nah, this probably takes itself way to seriously". However, with an 8.0 review from Arkada, why not give it a shot?
The extended edition actually gives more character insights than the normal version. We get see more of how Makishima thinks and acts, and other characters who were brushed to the side. (Such as Kagari and Ginoza.)
Either way, It's still an enjoyable experience and should be watched, no matter the version. Season 2 however.....has no replay value.
Season 2 started out really well though, but after episode 4(5 tops) it was just, *WTF* am I watching? Episode 6 felt like a rehashing of Episode 11 from Season 1, which made it that much worse. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the 2nd season,in fact from a standpoint, I enjoyed it a lot, despite it's cheesy story.
My ratings:
Season 1: 8.5/10 (Great design, likeable characters, amazing artwork and background, but has poor character development for side characters)
Season 2: 6/10 (Amazing design, intriguing story, interesting villain (till episode 7-11) started well but ended poorly, very few likeable characters, and no replay value.)
Movie: No comment till I've seen it.
Thanks for the info brah.
BrickDevil Tributes Is it a bit like LoTR cinema and extended versions?
Ephrones Sharp Basically. It's the original, but it has more character insight and it flows from episode to episode a bit better.
BrickDevil Tributes the movie is subbed now on KissAnime have you seen it yet? if so what are your thoughts?
Captain Ginko I enjoyed it, though I felt it would of been better if it was a season instead of a movie. It was great seeing Kogami and (spoilers) again. On the downside, everything just felt way too rushed IMO. Nonetheless, it's still 100% better than S2.
he just cant give it 10/10 can he?
Well yeah...it doesn't deserve a 10/10
+max101victory well for me it does just my opinion
@@max101victory it does deserve a 10/10
The reason why it feels more like a preview is because while it has themes, it doesn't actually explore them. As you said, the guy who was locked up at the age of 5, that would be cool to explore the psychology around it, too bad we'll never get that. I also had a huge problem with the characters, as you said they were not fleshed out enough, but on top of that Urobuchi never really did anything with them. He just gave them ideologies and left it at that, not actually giving them personalities with some exceptions. Akane is the only person in the entire show to question the sybil system... Why? Why is she the ONLY one? It doesn't make any sense. On top of that the main villain while having a master plan, why is it that his plan B is far more easy to accomplish than his plan A? Why didn't he just do it to begin with? It was never explained and never will be. As such the show only got a 5/10 from me unfortunately. I feel like it could have been a solid show, but compared to Ghost in the Shell which had all these themes that were all explored with great detail and realism, it just falls flat on it's face. I don't think it's bad, it's just sort of... Lazy... There is no complexity... It's just sort of a generic sci-fi show with good ideas and bad execution.
holy shit you put into words what’s been bugging me about her eyes all this time
"If youre watching this video, its possible that you are living better than most" (or smth like that) *holy shit*
Naman Khilrani I don't know what you're talking about. I'm watching this naked and handcuffed to a wall in a freezing Siberian prison on a toaster
Crazelord91 a toaster? how horrible!
I honestly am scared of a possible Season 3: think about it.
Akane's become expendable
The Sybil System's becomes a monster
Mika's trying to crush her senior
Kougami's definitely out of the picture
what else would there be for the fate of these characters.
For real, I think that I am more scared of a terrible fate for the characters rather than having a bad cannon sequel.
fate zero still beckons you to review it
I loved Psycho Pass. MAKISHIMA WHY DID I CRY BECAUSE OF YOU????!!!!!!!!
Regarding Akane's eyelashes, the original character designs were done by Akira Amano, who tends to draw her female characters with their lower eyelashes on the side of the eye like that (for an example, see any girl in Katekyo Hitman Reborn) :)
Finally got around to seeing this one with Second season around the corner. I dunno why it took me so long to see this one, but I'm glad that I did watch it.
I can't believe I actually liked all the characters from the Enforcers/Inspectors and even sympathizing with Makishima. My favorite character is obviously Shinya because of his personality of a honey badger (he doesn't give a fuck).
My final thoughts? Gen Urobutcher's best written show in my honest opinion.
I still haven't seen Madoka Magica (SO many shows I need to catch up on), but at least to see and hear that this is his forte of doing deconstruction/reconstruction, I definitely enjoyed this series big time. In a way, this show is more like a mirror of how today's society is as a whole. Not just for Japan, but for the U.S. and other countries that are dealing with similar situations, especially from being at times xenophobic with those wanting to immigrate to a different country.
Even I'll agree with how Akane's design throws me off on occasion, but I didn't let it bother me immensely. This definitely is a solid "buy" for me too where I know that a lot of people will enjoy it, but certain details with what happens when the series "main arc" starts, people will either love or hate it.
I actually found myself wanting Makishima to succeed in destroying the society that Japan had built itself around. I wanted the MWPSB to fail at the hyper oats factory. Is that bad?
Logan Hollis
Yeah I sympathized with Makishima as well to destroy Sybil..let's see how PP2 fares..thus far it has had one hell of a start.
Your review of the characters was laughable at best. You barely talked about any of the characters' personalities and how they're relevant to the story, and you completely passed over Makashima, who's the most important character next to Akane and Kogami.
Probably to avoid spoilers
Barely finished this anime before i came here for the review. but man was the ending so unsatisfying, good thing the 2nd season is coming this fall or i would be stress without all the answers.
eh, im different. i have many ways to react an ending.
FalconAlpaca
At my first thoughts, i thought this was going to be one of those animes that just stop at one season, but as of now that season 2 is coming, im pretty hype, i finish this anime about a month ago :p
The ending was the only bit I didn't like. I still rate it 10/10 and put it at #3 on my (admittedly modest) list of favourites. As for what was wrong with the ending, something I remember was that the music really didn't fit with the scenes, which made it hard to focus on what was actually going on. Then, it was just made up of a few scenes that felt slightly disjoint to each other, including quite a bit of cleaning up at the end. The lorry crash was animated notably poorly, too (given how well Senguuji is animated when blown up). I guess what I expected was just a more compelling pursuit of Makishima with music to match the rest of the series. And some more quotes!
James Wood is there really going to be a second season? When does it premiere?
Lydia Smith Well, the third PP2 episode has just aired.
I love anime, but the characters can be so cliche sometimes. So can the plots.
I see Ikane as the evil one here. She claims to be in it for justice and ends up defending a system that leaves her best friend dead co-worker murdered mentor murdered on top of that a world enslaved.
I just finished the anime yesterday, and I can only say that all seasons were masterpieces. They are sooo good. Each one trying to teach something else and with a clear message. It is soo good. I don't know why I didn't watch it before. It also has a lot of re-watching potential due to his complexity
What's next? Do you have a schedule? I recommend Guilty Crown.
VelvetSky1102 Why do people hate guilty crown? I don't comprehend why people think it's "bad?"
***** In sum, character personalities flip flop all over the place, and the story is filled with plot holes. If you enjoyed it, that's fine. I, myself, enjoyed Guilty Crown despite its terrible story and characters since the visual directing and soundtrack were incredibly high quality. However, from an objective standpoint, it is not a good show.
Ryan Cesar There's a good reason why characters like Shu personality keep flipping around. Shu is a type of character that want everybody to not hate him, but after hare's death he still want to help, but did it in a bad way. Later on he learned his mistake and forgive his friends. In my opinion, I think Shu has one of the most realistic personality.(I can relate to him) The reason why I said shu is because every time I see people bashing on the characters in guilty crown it's always shu. I don't see that much plot holes other than inori "transformation" and the ending(but I like the ending tho). Don't get me wrong I used to think it's meh because of how much people bashed at it, but rewatching it and thinking about it, I think it's a good anime. I think of it as my top ten. I think people just hate it because of how shu acting like a dick in the second half.
***** I agree. I don't know why everytime someone i see a guilty crown comment in arkada's video, people always say the story is shit. I can understand why people dislike it, but saying it's the worst show ever is overreacting. I don't think it's that great of a anime, but I don't think it's bad as people are saying it to be.
MrMrjontrollsten Nice that you agree with me. GC may not have the best plot/story compare to the some anime I've seen, but the characters, soundtrack, art style is ggod imo.
is the soundtrack in the start sung by the guy who sung the tokyo ghoul opening??
I didn't know that....
+Ishan Dave Ling Tosite Sigure, look 'em up :)
I thought I was having deja vus. its sounds so similar :D
GRArkada please do a First Reaction on Rail Wars. Plez.
That would have been cool, but unfortunately he said his Aldnoah.Zero FR would be the last one for the season. That should be out soon btw.
SBTWAnimeReviews that's cool and all but was I asking you to the First Reactions, no, no I wasnt.
***** touché
I wanna see him react to tokyo ghoul or akame ga kill first.
***** It's a good show. I mean they defused a bomb in the second episode.
Watch the re-air. You get so much more and you get to know Kagari's backstory as well. Well worth it.
i love the fact that it mentions 1984, as well as the works of Isaac Asimov. when comparing the worlds it gives those familliar with famous Sci Fi works to compare his muses to.
Why does the singer sound like the one for tokyo ghoul at the beginning?
Cuz it is the same one. TK from Ling Tosite Sigure
Xxsasuke51797xX Thought so. Thanks
I love Psycho-Pass!
Review Monster if you haven't seen it! Its amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing
What I need is more of that fine piece of Kogami Shinya. Nice review, agree with every points you've made. Especially the part about Akane's eye lashes haha
watching this in 2020... the whole world is pretty much in the worst place we could be
doesn't this happen in china? they "predict" who is more likely to commit a crime and pretty much watch them until they slip up?
Thats exactly why Psycho-Pass is banned in China. :-(
One big difference is that China still has functional security forces
In my opinion, the best part of this show is Akane. She starts as a boring piece of shit and damn! she kicks asses at the end.
The worst part: The enemy. ¿Can he stop quoting authors? It's like he doesn't have any type of motivation over those books he quote.
I'm not particulary excited about the second season, but i think Urobuchi can improve himself.
CUZ' I FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL
Since the antagonist is the only one that makes an interesting conflict i cant agree with you about him.
tomstonemale The antagonist always do the conflicts, that's why he's the antagonist.
But there're different types of antagonist.
There're ones that has motivations, and then there's this guy.
***** But he has motivations. He spends the entire show talking about why he does what he does and how he doesnt agree with the dystopian world he lives in.
And he quoting texts serves a very clear purpose, that he values remembering the struggles of other people for understanding and criticizing the world instead of just accepting it. To treat this knowledge as a valuable asset that enriches his life by thinking about it, instead of just using it as a piece of information that you can just search on the internet.
tomstonemale Welp, that's very gratuite for what he does. ¿How and why he's inmune to the psycho pass? The only thing you know about him is that he's perfect and he can do anything(except beating a girl). ¿Is that really a motivation to kill people and do what he do?
The authors that he quotes, most of them, lived in places where they saw the things that people suffer from oppresion, even in the show most of the people doesn't know how to react when someone is killing others, ¿Why is he able to do what he do? ¿Why is he special?
For my perspective, he's very gratuite. Only a character that enters to create conflicts, more than aporting a really redimible opposite.
***** "Gratuite"? "inmune"? "redimible"¿Hablas español? if not here's my response.
He's immune to the psycho pass because his actions dont come from an emotional background. The Hue test is what measures the stress of a person. He can kill someone without increasing his psycho pass because he is physically and mentally prepared to kill someone that he considers less than human. He judges people's value on their actions. If those people dont make decisions for themselves he doesnt think of them as human.
He's on the edge of being psycothic but he's not. Somehow, his will (determination) allows him to see the world he lives for what it is. He knows what he wants and, above all, how to achieve it. That makes him special and desirable by the Sybil System.
He even manages to find someone to oppose him on Kougami. That was the purpose of plotting all those crimes. To find someone like him.
"The authors that he quotes, most of them, lived in places ..." I missed the point of this paragraph. That's just part of the world of Psycho-pass. In reality, there are documented cases of murders in front of other people and nobody did anything (like Kitty Genovese's murder).
I agree that we dont know much about his past (same with most of other characters). But that doesnt make him a less compelling villain.
It's funny you say he's not a redeemable opposite when he's clearly the idealistic opposite of the rest of the characters. He's the only one trying to change the world, even at the cost thousands of lives.
Also, about not being able to beat a girl, cut the guy some slack, he doesnt have eyes on the back of the head.
The last episode, when she was talking to the Sybil system.....
"Hell to tha naw! To tha naw-naw-naw...Hell naw-naw, to tha naw-naw, to tha naw-naaaw-naw...Heeell to tha naw-naw!"
i have no idea what that means but it sounds so right
DeadVenom01 lol, look up Bishop Bullwinkle "Hell to the naw", that's the song I'm referencing.
i mean its kindof sad that a lot of the characters didn't randomly spew their life stories out for the audience but its kindof real. like who besides a close friend or family member would honestly go into detail about their life and thoughts with you. akane didn't even know the orange haired guy that well, I think they hung out like twice. like how one of the enforcers is the male detectives father but neither tells the main character because its not really any of her business
This show is absolutely off the hook! Incredibly good-looking, infinitely interesting and has a really cool villain. What more could you want? The only real gripe I had with this show was that Kougami and Akane were a bit toned down after the first episode. After such an explosive start I was expecting two total opposites to clash but instead they become friends? That's no fun. Despite that I really like how season 1 ended and I can't wait to see more. This deserves at least a solid 9 in my opinion.
wasn't their a tom cruise movie that explore this theme call minority report
evilmickey100 To be fair, Philip K. Dick did write Minority Report Back in 1956. It's more or less a staple of sci-fi. Borrowing from it is excusable, especially since Psycho Pass used the ideas it took to explore new themes. Minority Report played on the theme of predestination, and asked the question of how much of our fate is really in our own hands. (For instance,[spoiler alert] that one bit in the movie where Tom Cruise opted not to shoot the guy he was destined to kill, but then immediately found himself over the body holding a still smoking gun.)
Psycho Pass is about the benefits of new technology, and how even a perfect system doesn't truly improve the quality of life of the people living under it. I'm simplifying it, of course, but my point is that it's unfair to consider Psycho Pass a cheap Japanese ripoff of Minority Report. Both of them use a common element to explore a different theme in a completely different style of storytelling.
+Brendan Wojcik what's funny is Philip K Dick is directly referenced by name in a scene in the later half of the show.
Does anyone know what the highest rating to an anime he has ever given?
Attack on titan or Clannad I think.
9.4 if im not mistaken
criminal238 Not AOT. I think Clannad did very well, though.
AOT did do very well, but I don't think it's the highest.
He gave clannad a 9.44 and the disappearance of haruhi suzumiya a 9.31 I think then attack on titan 9.28
Am I the only one who hates English dubs? Japanese sounds so nice and majestic, I'm going to learn it.
New to anime?
Joshua Day Why bring that up? I completely agree. I can't stand Dubs.
Darth Olimar Correction: I'm actually pretty neutral. A good dub is a good dub whether it is Japanese or English. A bad dub can be from either side as well. I generally choose whatever I heard first unless a dub is particularly bad. I only made the snarky comment because it sounded as if he actually believed that dub haters were uncommon.
Joshua Day I have watched anime for 10 years weekly binging episodes and yet I prefer raw Japanese than any dubs, it has been one of the ways of how I learnt Japanese.
And that's cool. Your preference is your preference. I'm a voice acting enthusiast and honestly prefer anything with talent, effort, and good direction put into it. It doesn't mean that I like one and hate the other, and it doesn't mean that either is superior. People who try to act like there is no merit to dubs with comments like "my ears are bleeding" piss me off because they choose ignorance and elitism over acceptance of something that has flourished and has so much talent in it. Saying you 'prefer' Japanese is a breath of fresh air from the typical "Why do people still listen to this cancerous language (that we already freaking speak)".
Interesting to note, the character designs were done by a familiar, well-known artist. Akira Amano, mangaka of Reborn!, has a style that, despite being "generic," Is immediately recognizable.
Take that, Mr. Arcada, Sir!
I was introduced to the world of anime in 2012 and one the first (more mature/not Dbz or typical shounen genre) things I watched was indeed Psycho-Pass. Every episode left me thinking and wanting more. Makishima is one of my favorite villains. I really liked the setting, character development and interaction. I agree with your point with Kagari. That kid has some secrets that we should have seen. I'm hyped for the second season and look forward to experiencing this world deeper.
P.S. The band that did the second Op - Nothing's Carved In Stone is awesome.
╚(•⌂•)╝ Why did Kogami had to kill Shogo Makishima!!! Still Shogo Makishima and Light Yagami from Death Note are my favorite sociopaths/antagonist of all anime!
Yangel Senpai dat spoiler is fucking cruel!
+Pudding Lol i feel you, i learned my lesson after reading a comment section related to one piece. After that i vowed never again to look at anything related to an anime ever except maybe a general synopsis.
+Creative Ziggy yeah I try to stay off UA-cam until I'm finished with a series, so I don't see spoilers in the comments or in a video from the suggestions.
Would anyone recommend the English dub?
I watched the English dub, and I found no issues with it. It was not spectacular or anything, but I found it enjoyable.
Me as well ^^
the dub is not bad
I watched the dub. it was rather good.
Yes
i swear theres a psycho pass 2 out now right?
it will be on show in October
wait but 4 episodes are already out.
chaniQaProductions That's not Psycho-Pass 2, that's the re-airing he was talking about
huh? it's called Psycho Pass 2 tho. oh well at least i have time to watch the series past ep 1
No, it's called Psycho-Pass Extended Edition. Psycho-Pass 2 has yet to be aired.
I don't care what you say it still love this anime is still one of my favors
I typically don't like to watch reviews...on anything. But i stumbled across one Arkada's one day and i have to say i enjoy the reviews quite a bit. Keep up the good work sir!
Sounds a lot like minority report.....
Akane was one of the most annoying, convenient, and just plain bad (in my opinion) aside from susaku. "law does not protect people, people protect the law" what is the point of protecting a law that does not help or protect the people. her idiocy then sudden genius really ruined the show for me.
Etcha Sketch "what is the point of protecting a law that does not help or protect the people."
I've spent a total of 45 minutes thinking up a reply for this, but I felt they all fall short a similar way of trying to get my point across. As for the Susaku qoute, I think of "protect" as enforce since when people defend a law they apply it.
The quote actually means "If no one obeys the law, then the law won't be able to protect you."
Please review Ergo Proxy! ^_^ ~
He has already. It used to be up on his blip account. With any luck, he will re upload it.
Ergo Proxy... WATCH, WATCH!
Ergo Proxy will be TOUGH to review to say the least
Here's the link to Ark's Ergo Proxy review for those inclined to watch it blip.tv/glassreflection/glass-reflection-ergo-proxy-4025203
longliverocknroll5 It's already up on his website: www.glassreflection.net/anime-video-reviews/ergo-proxy/
The show is on United States netflix, if anyone wants to watch it.
I'm only on Episode 11, but I freaking love this series; what I enjoy most so far is the villains, and no I'm not talking about the main one shrouded in shadows, the ones that make up each episode; I love all the different M.O's and their backstories prior to the murders too;
I thought Season 2 was good. The best part was Akane and her team on viewing the Sibyl system and how Akane counter the system itself.
The average part was the villain Kamui itself. He's just not as interested like Makishima. Even though Kamui motivation is believable but his arc just kinda boring.
Review hunter x hunter!! the anime will stop after this arc.
What?! Does that mean the end of the story itself or just the end of the anime? Really don't wanna have to read the manga.
He doesn't watch long running shows.
No ewwww I threw up no joke
Great Anime. My opinion.
I would have liked to have had more Kagari. He added a lot of color and insight into the show, as well as being a character closer to Akane's age in the bureau.
Seeing how you said so on podtaku, i know you won't answer this, but it is my humble opinion that Ergo Proxy deserves a review. I get the impression that it's a very underexposed show when it shouldn't nessecarily be. Granted I didn't get a single bit of the symbolism, but the world was still easily intresting enough to have me hooked all the way through. It's a good anime that deserves the exposure you can give it :D
Akane pissed me off sooo much. I could hardly finish this anime due to how many blood vessels I was bursting. 7/10. If something is unremarkable, it doesn't deserve an 8 imo. It was good, but rather generic and predictable.
Akane was an irritating bitch, but i thought Makishima, Kogami and that guy with the orange hair were pretty cool.
Agreed. Why did they have to make Akane the main character? D:
***** Is it just me, or was she a complete dumbass for most of the series?
***** I totally agree about her being idiotic. But that didn't bug me. I've seen lots of idiots. What DID PISS ME OFF, was when we have these intellectual thinkers quoting philosophy at each-other etc, and Akane just says, no we shouldn't do that and some other garbage.... and its heavily implied she has the deciding argument as nothing new comes after that. When in reality, what she says is fucking dumb, and she has no right to take any kind of moral high ground.
predwarlord Agreed.
Finally! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHOOOOO!
Ikr
a 8.22 ... seriously?
Psycho-Pass is contradictions and hypocrisies our world will become throw the influence of the sybil system (because it's a contradiction and hypocritical in itself!), AND I'm very much against it ... I give it 3 & half stars ... a rental but never buy it anime!
Can you elaborate more? I do not really understand
621tan The sibyl system is made up of the brains of the same criminals "some more worst than other" the enforcers/cops capture/kill ... the only difference is that they have a ... certain unknown neural/chemical setup in there brains that makes em seen as clear by the Psycho-pass technology.
It's true that is contradictory, but why did you give psycho pass a 3 rating? Did you not enjoy it? If you don't mind me asking.
621tan I find the theories about the paradox very fascinating thats all, I find the main "VERY SMART female" protagonist very fascinating, and 3 stars means I liked it 4 stars mean I really liked it and 5 stars mean I love it ... but I thinks it's just likable thats all ... (maybe if they put a third season to this anime ... were the japanese people or the world declare war on the sybil system and wins and japan reopens their borders to the world again) then I'll give it 5 stars?
Ohh, I understand now, you have a different rating system from other people, I apologise. There is a movie so it may contribute to a third season. Thank you for your time
I really liked this series. I was uncertain at first, but then I started it out of boredom and really enjoyed it.
Ever get that feeling like you just want to cry or punch someone because one of you're favourite anime comes to an end
