  • Mary and Wes Rinella are deaf. While Mary was raised with American Sign Language, Wes learned speech with hearing aids, and now they want to give their three deaf children the chance to choose which language they prefer. The problem? Hearing aids aren’t covered by health insurance in California, and at around $4,000 a pair, they’re too expensive to buy out of pocket. That’s where Tanya Penn and the HearAid Foundation step in - since 2011 they’ve given out 270 hearing aids to families in need.

Did you know that in the United States, only 22 states require that health care providers cover the cost of hearing aids for children?

How come more people don't watch this?

Because they are enemies of deaf people. That's why. I'm deaf myself.

I research about Total Communication. It was so risky because I had bad sign language, poor English, and a lack of speech in a mainstream school when I grew up there. My parents spoke Spanish and didn't even know how to sign language. I looked like I was a language deprivation. I wish they chose Cued Speech or Auditory/Oral for me instead of Total Communication.

In the future, please make sure that any time a person is signing, their entire arm range and face is covered in the camera shot at all times. Otherwise signs/meaning are missed. Thank you!

Asl shouldn't be allowed if he wears a hearing aid

Hearing aids and Cochlear Implants are NOT the only option if a child is d/Deaf.

Lauren Clark All options should be available to anyone who wants them.

Of course! There are so many options other than hearing aids or CI’s, and different things work for different people. It should be up to the d/Deaf person to decide.

As an audiologist I totally agree Lauren, This is a good video to show that point. The mother only uses ASL. The father uses amplification. This family has chosen to get hearing aids for their child. It is the parents choice.
