Those "cliches" actually are sometimes necessary (however common) to set the scene of the situation. I understand the frustration but those things are what is common to the majority of stories from the woods/nature.
He shouldn't be telling his subs what to write imo.
@@icantthinkofaname15 I agree, but that's why he worded it the way he did. He asked for our opinions, and we can, as I and Clayton have, commented our opinions on the matter respectfully. I agree he shouldn't tell people what to write, Especially if he's actually getting true experiences being told to him, but thankfully he didn't just say "stop saying that, or I won't use your writing." He did ask for our point of view so hopefully he understands that we do not want people to stop speaking of the silence in the woods if it is actually their experience and they want to write about it:)
@@icantthinkofaname15 I'm not telling you *what* to write - but to write better and to avoid cliches. It's selfish to submit rushed/bad/unedited stories to me because you're holding up the line of literally thousands of other people who want to share their stories.
@@DarknessPrevails I don't mind if the stories have those cliches as long as it has peoples attention, in my opinion I'll still watch your videos cuz I love you 😆😅😜
Yeah I love your videos man but it’s about dishearting too create stories for you if your gunna tell us you don’t like it
I know that "Everything went quiet" is an over used term, however the average person doesn't know how truly terrifying it is when it happens. Most people are constantly surrounded by background/white noise, the hum of a refrigerator motor, the soft buzz of electric lighting, the chirping of insects, wind rustling through the leaves on the tree outside. The majority of the time our brains filter out these distractions but when all of that is suddenly gone and all you can hear is your heart hammering in your chest so hard it makes your ears ring....knowing that what ever caused the silence is out there listening to the exact same thing you hear.... trying to be quiet by holding your breath only makes your heart beat faster.... lungs burning for precious oxygen... your eyes watering, afraid to blink as you scan the shadow shrouded forest looking for any sign of movement.... alone, isolated, betrayed by your own senses.... That is the absolute terror of "Everything went silent".
Great way to paint the picture 😱😱😱
Gosh, that even made me more scared. Well put!
It probably is very scary… in person. Not when it’s read over and over that’s his point and if you listen to his stories very often it’s also going to get old. You wouldn’t read the stories about the same thing over and over without getting a bit over it.
Well said. Your spot on
As an outdoorsman the woods going quiet isn’t a cliché, it’s a genuinely terrifying experience. Please keep it in!
*UA-cam demonetized my last video, so you could you guys share and like this one as much as possible to make up for it? Thanks so muchness*
You got it!!
I can't download the video
well as for the cliche's what are they supposed to say if that is what happened? is all the animals hushed , better than the forest grew quiet? its the same thing but im not the one narrating them . maybe you could do a different kind of story for a while to change the cliche you have to read? just trying to help lol anyway good luck to the writers or at least a lot of them who are going to have to look up cliche's and figure out what you meant! hahahahahaha that was my first thought when you said that, im like you want them to change something when they don't even know what it is? :P jk love your stories although im getting tired of all the woods ones , we get it don't go in the woods or camping alone yadda yadda yadda!
Demonized.. wut fer?
Done!!
You know what the biggest cliches of all time are? I was afraid for my life but I just fell back to sleep. I survived something horrible, but I didn't tell the authorities because I thought no one would believe me. Cliche and insane.
Going to sleep after my life was just in danger is just absolutely mad to me lol
@Kuuryo That makes a lot of sense!
But hopefully I'll never have a chance to test that lol
my biggest pet peeve. or also "i don't believe in ghosts, even though a ghost just stabbed me" like it doesn't make you sound original. it makes the story sound like a quack. you wouldn't say something like "i don't believe guns shoot bullets, even though i saw a gun shoot a bullet with my own eyes."
Not believing in ghosts is one thing. not believing then seeing one, but making sure to always find a logic reason first before opting to say it was supernatural is another. but the above is just too much.
The most cleche to me is "heard a sound, but there was nothing there" ... Ok so search the immediate area.... Not just that one spot....
Urgh I know! How can you sleep if you're still in danger??
Just do what ya do, ur voice is the narration that weave my nightmares every night. Can't sleep without ya.
If you want to phrase it a different way that's fine, but the woods going silent that's a very important sign. It's a warning that should be noted. This is especially important for city residents who don't spend a lot of time in the forest.
For real.
Not true. (Not all the time) I use to live near a forest. Right on the edge of it n play n walk in the woods n animals like squirrels sound an alarm if u get too close n birds will do the same. I've lived next to deer who would stomp, grunt n "hiss" if danger was near by. Owls foxes coyotes will all make noise no matter what either from fear or warning the threat to stay away... the only animal that WON'T make noise is bugs. That is a common movie cliche for the woods to go silent. Its meant to install fear. .....
@@blackbeauty2166 If a monster/cryptid/dogman is near as you said the bugs and tree frogs that you think are bugs go silent. Those animals make the majority of the woodland noise. Also, the deer ,foxes ,owls will act differently when a huge freak is around as opposed to a human child that they're familiar with. I've lived in or by the woods all of my life. My state, West Virginia is the 3rd most forested state in the country. I used to live out in a hollow that was also home to a barred owl. "Who cooks for you?" is the onamonapia for their call. He/she was always stalking the cat in my thumbnail. He was way too smart for the owl. That bird never made a sound in my presence. I'd come home at night and shine my high beams at the thing. I'd talk to it . I'd pick up the cat in it's presence...... not a peep. Thanks for sharing your personal nature experiences . I love nature and the woods. At least we can agree when when the bugs and frogs are silent, something is around.
@@blackbeauty2166 i live in the woods and that happens also they see us more as annoying than predators
I could see that phrase “the woods went silent” being annoying but that being said, in the situation I’m pretty sure that would be something that would stand out and stick with you. Just look at it like another form of “so and so - let’s Not Meet”.
If the story is true, they're gonna tell it how it happened. The woods really do go quiet whenever anything is off.
Not just supernatural creatures, regular predators. If there's a bear or a mountain lion, everything quiets down.
@@lanemendenhall1717
Still. Just because it happens often doesn't make it a cliche. A lot of these people tell their stories recounting their own real experiences.
He's treating all of them like they're entertainment and everyone needs to impress him better.
@@lanemendenhall1717
Yeah. That makes sense
None of them are true dingleberry.
@@hukabuktx6753
It doesn't matter if they are or aren't. It's still a phenomenon that happens and it's spooky enough to make note of it.
Also, a lot of people claim their stories to be true. Mine was. I'm not making anyone believe me, but if I share it then I wouldn't want to be criticized.
Noah Davis 😂😂😂
The woods going silent is not a cliche its a real spooky common experience.
woods usually get very quiet when a predator is in the area, I think. right?
@@dapje2002 but literally anything at this point is cliche based on how many stories are out there
@@dapje2002 how else would you describe the absense of sound
@@dapje2002 I can understand that, but the problem is they're not trying to be professional writers. They're just relaying their story, their supposedly actual experience, to be narrated, so I don't think he should require them to phrase it differently, though if he asks / recommends people to try writing with more variation that's understandable, or even just asking them if he can edit some words around in their story so it never changes the context but just changes something like "the woods got quiet, and I felt tense," to "the silence of the woods was deafening and the tension I felt could rival that of the ropes on a bridge." It doesn't change anything actually in the story, still being authentic to the original, but with better language used. I don't think they'd mind if he did something like that, and it might take a little more time but he could even send them the edited version and see if it's fine with them. I think that would be a good solution
Thales I don’t know about you but I’ve spent quite a bit of time hunting large game and the woods going quiet is a real thing, especially if there is a predator, it’s not just them being “sneaky” I’ve heard the woods alive with sound one moment then dead quiet the next. But that’s just my experience
I believe as a fan of horror stories the line "the woods goes quite" is a descriptive term that adds value to the story i also hunt and knowing first hand how eerie it is when that happens it kinda of a must sorry darkness
Maybe the woods actually do go quiet?? Cliche as it may be, they're just describing what they experienced.
That's what i was thinking, but it does take away from the believability.
It's actually very common. People who have experience in forests know that if everything goes silent, it means there's a predator around. Birds stop chirping, animals stand still, it's super eerie.
Agreed. With all.
Exactly. I was thinking the same thing too. How else are they supposed to describe it?
Yes, it does actually happen (usually when a large predator is in the area), but it typically takes an experienced outdoorsman to even notice it as a red flag, in many cases.. The need to interject that fact into every story makes them sound scripted.. 😑
"Are the deer usually that big here?"

I honestly love your woods/supernatural creature stories the best and truly enjoy the scary ‘woods have gone completely silent’ because to me that’s a real story. Especially when so many others experience the same with these encounters. I can see why it gets old fast with you because you do hundreds of these but please don’t stop! Ur the best man we all love yeah 🥰🙌🏻🙌🏻
Let them say it, because if the woods go quite it’s a meaning to their story.....
Dog man near by creates this quietness with no noise so it’s not a cliches per say..
Wow I’ve never had a plant tell me scary stories before cool!
Omg 😅 you just made this 10x better 😅
Lol
My eyes roll to the back of my head every time I hear, "it was only minutes, but it felt like hours"
But its the real deal if you've ever experienced it
New drinking game: take a shot every time "the woods go silent"
Makes it easier for me to catch you when you're in my woods. 😸

So true!!!
@@lanemendenhall1717 oh man!
i learned the hard way there isnt enough alcohol in this world to get me drunk and keep me there for more the 30 minutes to a couple hours tops.
One shot every time some horrifying creature speaks in the voice of the storyteller
One shot for every "guttural growl"
One shot for every use of the treeline as a sighting point
One shot for being chilled to the core
One shot for being given chills
One shot for camping gear being abandoned
One shot for not bothering to report a horrible, life threatening encounter to the police etc.
One shot for totally ineffective gunfire, especially at point blank range
Two shots for a Wendigo
Two shots for a Skinwalker
Two shots for a Rake
Two shots for a Goatman
Two shots for a Jersey Devil rip-off
Two shots for La LLorona
What? I love that part. It helps set the scene immensely! 'The woods go quiet'.
I binge these videos a lot and no matter how many times the people notice the woods going silent whenever it happens it's the moment I actually start to get tense and spooked? It sets the tone really well in my opinion and manages to add a decent layer of scare to something that maybe wouldn't have made me as scared otherwise
Dude, We feel so bad for your views dropping but we're here for you and we love and respect for you :)
I can see your frustration but this cliche exists for a reason. In the forest things going so silent is both a phenomenon that goes by the totally original name "the silence", it's also often the first sign that a large predator or worse is in the area.
Encountered it once myself, took shelter in some bushes and saw a poacher walking the main path.
Uh-oh, may be time for a break?
Imagine that; you're all alone in the woods... your best friend, who was just behind you, has vanished. The moon is full but the trees are heavy with thivk leaves, blocking any moonlight. That's when you hear it... the deafening silence....
So you bust a move and sing out "Can't touch this!" and before the monsters know it, you've grabbed your junk and are heeheeing it out of there, moonwalk style
I think it’s important to remember the people submitting these stories are not professional writers and potentially forcing them to phase out common lines that have an understood meaning could lead us to misinterpret or could skew the emotions and feelings the author intended to show
That’s what I was thinking, it’s just amateur writers echoing what they know is creepy, which is exactly how cliches become cliches.
I don’t agree... because woods actually gets quiet when something very dangerous around and I wouldn’t call it cliche, actually it tells me that it most likely did happen
P.s. but love your channel and love camping and cryptid stories
I’ve also noticed that you stopped naming the location for each story.. I think it was actually a good addition to every story title - also makes it more believable and just satisfying our curiosity.
My fav is when people say "this is my paranormal story" and try to make it sound as much as a ghost story as they can but end it with, "I don't believe in ghosts, but I can't explain this". Like seriously you send in a story to a horror channel as a ghost story but don't believe in ghosts ....OHHHKAYY
Digital Bear exactly
The best part was the intro, Darkness...
My creepy experiance camping, things never went silent...it was loud, it was the outback, and once you eliminate Crocodile's, Kangaroo's and Koala's making noice; the weirder noises become more menacing... :O
when you've truly experience it...when all life stops dead cold in the woods..it's never old.

Hell yeah it does count!!
Jaren Kiser l think it does, lol!
You deserve way more attention yo, you have such a good voice and do such a good job at reading stories like this.
Ehhh. It's alright, ain't all that special for spooky content tho. A little bit of a nasaly voice.
Yes yes you rock!!! Thank you for your dedication and content. 🌻
I can understand that it's a little bit boring for you to read this in every camping / deep in the woods / cabin in the woods (...) story; but I think compared to the phrase "Let's not meet" does this phrase fulfill a purpose, because usually, when animals get quiet, there's something wrong, may it be a heavy weather change or something else. So I don't see too much cliche in that phrase (simply because usually it's true).
Now I'm exited to hear your stories, Darkness 😊!
I hate to play Devil's Advocate, but the woods really do go as silent as the grave when there's something around. Yes it's a cliche but it really does happen
I just want people who say "knees bent backwards like a dog's" to look at a dog once again. A bit closer. And realize that is not their knees lol
I don’t think darkness would call the silence a cliche if he had ever experienced it
"The woods fell silent" I.e
"Nothing, as If I entered the Void, with the exception of my own heartbeat ringing in my ears, & the sound of blood pulsating in my veins, there was an eerily discouraging silence floating in the woods."
You been in the void??
That is too much description. It is what pisses me off about Stephen King. He over describes things and over analyzes them. Keep it simple.
Tonya Brooks gee sorry Tonya, Stephen and everyone better tone it down so you don’t get impatient.
Adaumis Gaming bravo!!!
@@hapisky5013 LMAO thank u
I think the cliche that bugs me the most is how often people say stuff like 'I froze for what felt like hours, but it was probably only a couple seconds.' I get what they're going for, but there must be a less cliche way of putting that...
I love watching your videos! They’re the best! Thanks for posting!
I'm sick of everyone "pitching a tent" just kidding! But if you've ever experienced the woods going silent because a predator is near, you'd realize the phrase holds serious power and meaning. I get your point but it IS terrifying for a natural predator, let alone some weird cryptid or whatever. Just my 2 cents... Love the channel!
Me: wow I’m glad none of this can happen to me.
The monster, knowing that I live in the woods with no neighbors: Are you sure about that?
Not sure how one could rephrase "the woods went quiet". Except maybe, "suddenly, the ambience of the wilderness ceased to exist". I think that would be an interesting way to word it lol
Hey Darkness. I love your content and always look forward to the next time I'm blessed to hear your voice! 😊 After all this time listening to you I've never left a message. Just FYI, when us humans go into the great outdoors our instincts are key to survival. Whenever the critters go silent it means there's a threat or predator in the vasinity... If someone sends a story with that detail... It needs to be included... Or it won't be genuine. Hey! Thanks for the great work!!! Love everything you do!!! Much love from Salem Oregon!!!😊
Dude!!!!!!! Thank you for bringing this up!!!! I guess some narrators throw in their own, I'm thinking " ok the last 19 stories, every one got someone saying "then my blood ran cold?"" Common now. Youeah bro I'm with u, either ask ppl to not say them or word the title of your narrations so listeners know you can change a word or two. I do like them once in a while but yeah at this point most of them make me wanna scream, not of fright but out of annoyance. Finally subscribed bc of this. Thanks!!!😊
I roll my eyes when I hear " It was about 10 seconds but it felt like hours!" Yikes... Thank s Darkness P..! ❤
I just viewed the whole “tone down the cliches” comment as him trying to help out the people who want to have their stories narrated.
Like so many people have already said things like the woods going silent when something 'dangerous' is around is a real thing, and adds to the scene setting. The phrase I never want to hear again is 'we booked it/booking it' out of there.
Gotta love the MC Hammer comment! That's so freaking funny it made my day. Or evening. Whatever! Thx for another spoopy video Daddy Darkness!! (Get it? You know? Spoopy? From your favorite comments? Lol)
Darkness Pervails, bro you have been on a roll lately!!! Really enjoying the continent. Much thanks!
Hey darkness, I just want to say that you're the best reader out and the best out there in my opinion! I save you're videos for when I want to listen and pay attention to something, and not just having back ground noise.
ps I have some stories of my own mostly farm stories because I grew up on a farm, and Northern Indiana stories.
best wishes you're viewer Colten
Silence in the woods may be cliche but it's a real defining feature of those moments, it can't be helped and to leave it out would be to take away from the experience.
I wrote an entire story using only the cliches... It's possible (I'm so glad you said it first!)
Wow lovely profile pic
Legend has it that the woods go quiet every time Darkness uploads a new video!
Awesome as always.
So glad you finally spoke out on the cliche phrases, I’m honestly getting very tired of hearing the same stuff from all of these stories. Makes me feel like they are made up because they all sound the same...
Heavy sarcasm ahead. Ooooo I JUST LOVE intros where narrators complain. It just makes my whole day! -.-
Any time I hear ' we had to 'book' it out of there. I'm rooting for the cryptid.
I absolutely agree like we all know the woods go silent but, the one that gets me the most is the one that goes something like: " then it was all over, or so we thought". So annoying...
Just as I started watching this...the woods went quiet!
Lol
P.S. I don't think that "The woods went quite" is really chicha.(spelling?) It's an accurate description of the environment when a predator is near. It's something spooky that really happens when something is close, and in real life it's scary as hell! Just try to think of it different.😉
Spelling was almost there, *cliché, but a lot of animals don't really go quiet because of predators, some will make noises to warn others that a predator is near, I'm sure the woods going quiet does occur, I just doubt it happens as often as people think
@@endmeplzzz3593 Maybe where there are animals who benefit from an alarm from other animals like in Africa where monkeys alerting each other has taught other animals to be aware. I've spent so much time outdoors in the U.S. and I've never heard that here. It just goes quiet, yes, even the bugs go quiet. I'm not saying there isn't places here that doesn't happen. I'm just saying in my experience in the wilderness in the US, I've not experienced animals alerting each other with noise.
Don't use that winking emoji ever again
Cody thank you for shooting at it. I honestly get frustrated when people in the stories have guns and don't shoot. You done a good deed.
I can't wait for more scary stories,I love your vids
Idk if you understand fully the meaning of the woods going fully quiet means an apex predators s hunting meaning you could be in severe danger
For real, though, if you read any books by Linda S. Godfrey, the phenomenon of silence before a cryptid appears seems almost universal in reported sightings. Her theory is that it's caused by the interdimensional being crossing over into our reality.
Thats the way I feel when people always say. I noped out of there!!! I hate that cringeworthy to me
Jen jen I like the one that goes "I gtfo'd" it's rather rare so it can be used accordingly.
I love that phrase noping it out. Bucket of nopes and all of that.
Tonya Brooks hearing the woods go silent struck me with a smidge of nope, yet I remained steadfast in my willingness to move forward and not retreat.
To someone who has never experienced everything around you going quite them it is completely terrifying.
T
For good reason too. That terror is an evolved response; prey animals will silence themselves if a large predator enters the area. Though to be fair, humans are all large predators so even though our bodies react to the threat it's often just an ecological acknowledgement of your presence.
Absolutely agree.Only happened a few times while hunting....you pay attention quick.
@@danielayers8863 I had to go completely quiet walking home one night.
It is, it makes you so aware of everything and makes u kinda panicky
@darkness prevails: thank you for reading the story’s! I can understand you’re reasoning! You are my favorite narrator, every night I fall asleep thanks to your voice. It’s clear, understandable, and calm! You know how to bring thé stories a live! Thank you so much for doing this!!!
As someone who lived out in the woods most of his life, it’s normally noisy with the sound of life, beautiful and vibrant. Thissss is why most people try and make note of noise in their stories, because the lack of all sound where there had once been plenty, is a sign that something is off in the forest. It’s seems like a cliche, sure, but it’s really just how nature works. Silent woods are terrifying, especially if you’ve been out in nature before.
It would seem that the eerie silence is poignant to the person's experience. It sets the scene that the person was incredibly uneasy with the change in environment.
Kinda like the canary dying in the cage. One must become hyper-aware when in the wilderness. It is important for survival. To be unaware of ones surroundings is ignorance.
Besides, it is the epitome of warnings that a cryptid or other dimensional creature is at hand.
Love your voice and stories Darkness!
I agree with most..woods going silent isnt a cliche when it's a real experience..and unless you've experienced it yourself you just cant understand how creepy it is..how EVERYTHING will be alive and then all of a sudden or quickly it goes dead quiet...
Also of these are actual real stories...
How would one know what is a cliche if they are just recounting their actual experience?
Listening to these stories while camping would be a chilling experience
If you had experienced the woods go quiet, truly quiet, then i dont think you would think it was cliche. once it happens to you, it sticks. Just hearing about it makes the hair stand up on my neck. Its the only time ive ever known i was truly in danger. Like my next decisions could determine my future and the realization hits very suddenly. You'll do anything in that moment to get away. Nothing else matters. Its this absolutely overwhelming feeling so primitive and deeply ingrained into you, you didnt know it ever existed before. You meet a new aspect of yourself and it changes you.
Luv ur channel, great narration voice, very creepy lol, keep up the good work and thank u so much
The woods going quiet is a typical sign of a predator being present. That is a sign....not a cliche'.

I like the stories here that take place in the wilderness. Nothing like them happened to me in the woods, as my experiences were enjoyable, though some bad storms happened at times.
DP! These stories Scared 😱 me & story one reminded me of a Creepy Pasta 🍝! 💯👀
John Jr Gonzalez what creepypasta?
I live in the middle of the woods and a great amount of the time the woods hush down. It's scary honestly; my cats beg to come back inside then. No bears or large animals ever spotted or reported where I live. The place is apparently haunted and all the grown men have claimed that they felt a "hunter" watching them. I've taken short walks but I get uneasy and just go sit on my porch. I cover all the windows... My cats hate the windows at night and just hide. I believe wholeheartedly that a witch used to live here. Dreams and experiences have lead me to this conclusion. Figured I'd share my brief experience...
You're right, after awhile each time i heard clichés like that i'm just like... come on man, real or not, yes it's scary but there's other ways to formulate it, also i feel like some people don't even try to make it look real and it's like all the horror clichés are in their story, and it's just a big *sigh* like The woods gets quiet, they all fall asleep but there's a ''monster'' outside, like really? I get that you're exhausted but if there really is a monster your adrenaline's gonna keep you awake all night especially if you think you're gonna die...
I listened to pretty much all your videos and each time there's one or two story worth an eye roll, but anyway, it doesn't matter cause you're awesome and i won't stop listening to your videos cause you're doing a great job :P
Yes, Darkness! You are so right about the cliches! If I has a dollar every time I heard "My heart dropped into my stomach"... Yeah, it's a good idea to request that submitters skip the cliches.
Wow so rude if he skipped them then he wouldn't have any uploads dumbass

It's always eerie when the woods go quiet. Sorry, I couldn't resist:)
I agree with you for the most part. The actual wording is very important, but the woods going quiet is very real and if you have ever experienced it then you know how your instincts get kicked off. But there must be a better way to say this same idea without it being so cliche.
People dont know how to describe things any other way. But, yeah I agree with you darkness.
How would you describe it without sounding "clique"?
(Genuinely curious)
@Kuuryo Those are really good examples thank you!
Explains the forest's eerie silence perfectly!
Most people who submit stories are by no means professional authors, (like myself) but I do hear alot of really well written and thought out stories.
@Kuuryo if you ever submit a story, I won't believe it lol
@@icantthinkofaname15 sad. They just proved that a cliche can be written in a better form n u wanna be salty lmao 😂😂
I love the jersey devil stories. I’ve lived in NJ my whole life and it’s such a huge staple in our (culture?) I always get so excited when I hear people talk about it! He’s out there!
I think thats kinda sad to go camping alone
my favorite!! i love camp stories 💗 perfect to listen to before bed ... thanks🙌
Omg the cliches! The woods go quiet IRL for so many reasons other than dramatic tension. I’m really waiting for one where it goes for the whole set up and then just rains.
Keep doing what you do. These stories scare me so much.
I think the _______, let’s never meet again is also pretty cliche.
Oh those really annoy me to the core
Those are all from a subreddit called r/letsnotmeet. That's how they end every story there, as a rule, and people take em for videos.
I don't like that either. It's just lame. But 🤷♀️

I wholeheartedly agree ! 😂 The cliche remarks just become soooooo irritating after a while, and they've sort of been ruining the believability/enjoyability of a lot of the stories I've been hearing lately...
Did you even care or until he said something?
@@icantthinkofaname15 Yes, as I have said numerous times on previous DP videos.. 🙄 (Hence why I commented).
@@CaptiveReefSystems Then write your own story and read it. These so called cliches make the story. The woods going silent is not cliche, it says that something is about to happen. Jeesh!
@@NightOwl701 cliches dont MAKE stories if u know how to tell a story, cliches are known to be boring if u can't use an right. Real or not the cliches need to go away if EVERY story says the SAME LINES. Besides I've lived near a forest n played in it. It doesn't have to be quiet for bullshit to happened. Squirrels will still cry out if a bear is near by 😂😂😂 it doesn't matter.
There are two times ....ok three times in the forest/woods which are when you know something is up/wrong:
1. When all noise and movement seems to end....even the sound of your own footsteps is missing;
2. When the sounds of the everything seem to be louder than anything you've ever heard before;
3. When there seems to be no insect or animal life around you at all and complete stillness is everywhere.
I understand that hearing these situations by those never having been in a forest/woods situation where something just....isn't normal happens and it is dangerous....seems "cliche" but it is honestly what happens.
Also, I believe "Spoon" in your comment reading was a reference to "The Tick"; that was his battle cry.
The cliches can be comfortable and help us settle in to a familiar place.
What I want is for them to be followed by more. "The woods fell silent and for a moment I froze. As if waiting. And waiting there, I listened.."
I live secluded in the forest. When it goes silent it freaks me out. Yes, it does go silent sometimes.
dude, when you're camping in the woods out in the middle of nowhere, every footstep or whisper can be heard for 50 yards. it's impossible to move without making noise at night in the woods. anything outside your tent can hear every move you make.
