In this video I react to Sky Machine by the band Karnivool. IT is a proggy song that sounds like it wrote itself- a flowing but complex composition.
Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on UA-cam. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

I think this is my favourite Karnivool song alongside Deadman from their MASTERPIECE Sound Awake. They are just one of those band with the little extra, like Tool and Leprous. Unique sounding and truly great musicians.
This was great, thank you🙏🏻
As an Australian it makes me happy that you reacted to this, but... as an Australian I'm still waiting on Pineapple Thief haha
Yes I'm very curious to hear their music
Since they’re (western) Aussies, I’ll go with the same request as ppl have said, deadman
Or
Cog - what if
Woop woop! Karnivool to tour Europe next year. Oslo september 8th. O
happy news!🥳
Dean, your channel never disappoints! Carnivool isn't my top band somehow, but whenever I listen to them I'm always attracted by their quality and refined feeling for melody.. They blend so many good bands into their unique sound. I don't know why but Rishloo comes to my mind when speaking of Carnivool, a band you reacted once or twice to. Since Rishloo is very much at the top of contemporary prog bands, I think nobody will disagree to make complete album reaction to them, maybe Feathergun, Eidolon or Living As Ghosts With Buildings as Teeth. Or if that's too much, maybe reaction to one of their songs from albums you didn't react to? To Tame the Temporal Shrew, Weeble Wobble+Eidolon Alpha, Zdzislaw, Keyhole in the sky, Diamond eyes...
Will do the teeth album in whole, prob January
I haven't listened to much Karnivool at all. I kinda got into a little trance with this one!
It was quite an enticing song
Australia has always had great bands since the early 80s Split Endz,Crowded House, Midnight Oil,Silverchair etc etc
Icehouse, INXS
ACDC lol
Cold chisel
So beautiful!
I know it's chosing the apprentices before the masters but I do like them even more than Tool. A bit more eclectic would be the motivation I guess
Haven't heard this song yet I'll have to check it out.
I encourage you to hear Deadman. Or maybe even a future album listen through of 'Sound Awake' since the whole thing is fantastic.
Probably their deepest and most layered song, that needs several listening sessions to fully appreciate all layers and details.
This cover of ''Sky Machine'' is fuckin' outstanding - ua-cam.com/video/Z5S6zN3SR5U/v-deo.html
Deep and layered, you nailed it with two words, bravo
Love the vool!
