Drew you are so right about teaching kids responsibilities and work ethic. I think that's one thing wrong with lazy, entitled people today. It all begins at home. Brittany you do an awesome job of editing and music selections. Love you both. PS, I love the way you love and care for the kitties.

Enjoyed Drew's fond memories of getting his first mower on wheels. Sounds like Drew's dad was very wise because here is Drew with acres of land to tend. Your water system is very smart. This warming planet is bringing us more precipitation than ever. Your cat house looks like the perfect answer to wet days. I'm sure they'll eventually warm up to the idea!

Hard work is a huge factor! People would look at you two and say oh you’re so lucky…but it was/is the work your willing to put into it that places you where you are today. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a job done where you put in the effort…and being able to enjoy it in the days, months…even years later!
To get heat lower, just add another duct from your window to the floor…then your heat will come in lower and your footsies will be toasty too!

The cats will probably eventually like the cat house. If you want to give them further encouragement, make an exit door as well as the front door. It's instinctive and protective to have a means of escape should a predator (even though Portugal doesn't have predators; stray dog) show up at the front door.
Drew, I'm loving your narration :) Keep on keeping on, Mr. and Mrs. Adventure.

Drew can my amazing 17 yr old son come work for you for free this summer!!! 🤗 So funny you bring up the hard work. He just got his first job and I told him I wanted it to be in the service industry so he could understand the hard work people put into things for others. He is now a runner at a restaurant. Picks and cleans up the dishes, take orders and fills them on line etc. We went out the other night for dinner and I complained it was slow service and he said "Mom someone may be slammed in the back or they may be short handed". He understood and respected those who work at the restaurant we visited and it worked 😊 Hard works is more than just hard work. PS I LOVE the smell of freshly cut grass too

With my husband passing 14 years ago, many ask why I hold on to it. But the continued physical work, the property is paying me back for the many years we invested into it. Drew, your stimmer (never heard that word) works well. The big leaf weed is an obnoxious one. Can grow to five feet tall. When I had acreage in CA, I'd get after them every Jan when they were an inch tall. Here is some info about it: Common mallow (Malva neglecta), also known as cheese mallow, cheese weed, and dwarf mallow, is a winter annual broadleaf weed, though it can also act as a biennial if environmental conditions that favor growth persist. It is generally found in low-maintenance turfgrass lawns, nursery crops, and landscapes.
I agree with you that kids need to be part of their family/home by participating in the chores and upkeep to keep their home functioning and being part of the family unit, and being allowed to participate in decision making regarding the family/home/activities. It gives kids a sense of ownership.

Drew, you are so right about teaching children from an early age to work for their money. The same applies to teenagers to start working to either pay in full or help pay for part of their college or university tuitions. Unfortunately that concept is still VERY FOREIGN in Portugal 🇵🇹. I have family and friends there. I know what I’m talking about. Thank God I live in Canada and my two girls started working as soon as they turned 16 and finished college and university nearly debt free. The same is now being applied to the 2 older grandkids.🙏🤞

Brittany & Drew, my husband and I had been watching your channel and others for inspiration on van life after we retired. We searched for two years before buying our van. Unfortunately nine months after getting our dream van, we were involved in a major highway crash during our travels. My husband and our 12 year old Sheltie didn’t survive. It’s been a long and hard 15 months for me now. I had to quit watching all of the van life channels for obvious reasons. However, I was able to keep watching you and Drew as your adventures have changed a bit. It’s comforting to me to keep watching something we loved watching together. Thank you for that.

Congrats to you both on all the new progress, earth-moving size to cat house-size. I'm inspired by you as people at least as much as I am by your magical water mill adventure. I'm wondering if it might help circulate heat inside the van if you temporarily mount a heat-powered wood-burning stove-top fan up high by the ceiling (where it's 90 degrees) ... the fans are so simple and effective, and also beautiful! And, could be used later on top of any wood stove inside your house. ❤Lee

Beautiful cat house! Lol . Cats like routine! They are just used to where they have been sleeping. I have some feral cats that I've spayed and neutered. I feed them and provide warm beds, but each one has its own preferences.
You both have great work ethics. I agree that kids should work for what they get. Growing up in a large family, we grew up on a farm. I had my own chickens and ducks. I sold eggs and fruit to be able to buy my first bicycle! Later I, baby sat and cleaned the house to buy my own clothes. When I had my own son, we had money, but he had chores to get an allowance. I really love the way the Newbys (UA-cam family also building their home in Portugal) are raising their children.
Your weed walking is so satisfying and that culvert is just brilliant! BTW, some of the weeds that you were cutting with a rounded leaf are edible. It is a common mallow, Malva sylvestris. The leaves can be cooked like spinach or fried into chips, and the little round seed pods can be eaten when young and tastes a little like cheese!

Since your land is full of big stones, I think you should build more retaining walls to the sides of your terrases. This will prevent the soil to move downward though it leaves the water to pass through. With a bit of research you can master it. But I think it will make an essencial change and help you minimize the floods.

  • @rolandtb3

Need to slowly build a stone retaining wall on terrace #6. Heavy rains, runoff and gravity will eventually erode the existing channeled wall. Also recommend and reinforcing the road hillside cuvert pond area. Allowing steep hill terrace runoff to pool and slow before going under the road.
Next determine after future heavy rains, how much the drainage and erosion has improved. Or are further modifications required? Water from the hill, plus from the road, just the rain coming down. A straight water path is fast, vigorous and powerful. Nelson is a big help.

You guys can use 20% vinegar and water mixture to spray on the eucalyptus trees or any annoying vines/weeds. It doesn’t work immediately but a few treatments should do the trick. Just spray on the leaves. It’s a good alternative to harsh weed killers that can travel through your water ways. Place is looking great! Can’t wait till you start on the inside!

It didn't hit me (after all of this time) until someone famous passed this past week, that Drew favors this person when they were younger. Ryan O'Neal. Just had to bring it up before I got into the new seed spreader invention lol. I think you're going to get grass seed places you don't want or intend to have there? But thanks for the entertainment anyhoo ,,,,,and such a good cat catch with all three cuddling with each other. I'm sure they warmed up to their new house by now.

Love how you guys are transforming that place. I'd love to have Drew's skills. Awesome to have those. I learned to mow lawns and wash cars for people as a kid. But nobody taught me about other skills to maintain a home. Wish my Dad would have taken the time. Oh well.

If you use a hand towel and spin it in the air a few times it will mix the air in the van and “break” the hot/ cold pressure barrier which will start the cycle of circulation/air flow cycle and it should keep mixing more easily lessening the temp zones.

For grass, I think you should consider using this one: Axonopus compressus (Grama Brasileira).
Really tough, resistant, low maintenance and low water and...it covers everything avoiding weeds.
Maybe do a test batch on one terrace and check.

Aim the heater duct the ground or put something on it to divert the heat downward instead of straight out. Hope that helps

Hey guys!! Your property is really starting to take shape. Oh yes .. I understand the level of hard work. I have stopped in for a few months so I can see alot of changes. Hopefully you can harness the rain in the wet season and eventually store it in a permanent treated pool, and beautiful oasis.

If u do a mix of white vinegar, salt and dawn dish soap. Those trees and weeds won't come up again. And it's safe to spray.

You are so right about parents instilling work ethics in you..i wanted more expensive hair products when i was 15 and my parents said if i wanted something better i should go get a job and earn the money to buy it! I did just that! I learned that if you want something you need to work for it! Thanks for the videos

We live in terraced property we have 5 levels. The goats live on one level we have the turkeys/chickens who live on another. We have our fall garden on one level and a summer garden on another. We do get great leg workouts going up and down. We have amended our land with cow and goat poop.

you should read up on ''sw ales''. with storm/rainwater you want to SLOW THE FLOW, and spread it out over the terranes if you want your well to be full rainwater has to be allowed to slowly seep down into the ground not wash away all your soil.

Hello Drew & Brittany! 😀 You are doing a great job on your property. I am sure it will be a fantastic end result. I am a little north of you, in the central part of Portugal, slaving away, loving it! 😊 Oh, and the constant problem with different heat levels. I got a little 12 volt fan that I put up in the ceiling and have on low, forcing the warm air down to the floor. Works great. Take care and I wish you good luck from Spain 😀
