  • Finite Element Method - case study. Using SolidWorks Simulation (FEM-software) to analyse how a gear will fail when transferring large forces. A solidworks vectorplot is created to show the way the gear will fail.
Summary: The moment on a gear-tooth leads to high tensile stress at the base of the tooth which will lead to high shear-stress, which will shear the tooth right at the base.

If you want to know when something breaks you compare stress with ultimate stress (Ftu) not yield stress (Fty).

Right, but if you want to design something properly you should keep it operationally within yield range so that it doesn't experience permanent deformation and possible loss of function.

Can I do this to analyse how a gear tooth will deflect ?

In the real world, another gear is making contact in at least a couple areas.
