From gyms to Spotify. There's one golden rule to follow when your business model is subscription based. You never remind your customers that they are paying you. Because if you do, they will start questioning whether the value is on par with the monthly fee. Netflix just reminded everyone that the value isn't there anymore and they are still charging people for a service they haven't used in months.
Honestly, that's true. I have unsubscribed today after thinking the last show I watched was Better Call Saul, well, and a few episodes of Dahmer when it was released. No point in paying them when there are no good series or movies coming out (or at least the ones that would be interesting to me).
I called and spoke with Netflix. Got a bunch of excuses and actually told this wasn’t true, we can still share our password. We just have to verify our account. And verify the primary location. My question to Netflix was this…”Does this mean my husband can’t use Netflix while at work on his phone anymore? His work is only a mile and a half away, and he pays for the account”. It’s a simple question. Yet I didn’t receive a simple answer.
I’ve seen so many simple questions like yours and they either can’t or won’t answer and many people just get hung up on. It’s bullshit to expect everyone to have several different accounts and that’s basically what they’re hoping people are going to do

Hulu honestly is better, I never stopped pirating with Netflix when my family had it, and Hulu did for a while (until my family got rid of it). Currently it's too expensive to have streaming services so I just pirate
The worst part is, if you set your home ip to a specific VPN location, this completely nullifies Netflix’s entire system and makes VPNs even more worth it.
The only reason i use netflix at all at this point is because they are the legal distributor of shows i want to watch. Im an international student so this is just gonna cut me off from my parent's netflix account and i cant pay for my own. All this change is gonna do is revitalize piracy
I’m in exactly the same situation lol. I go to university in Japan and my family lives in the US. If this actually goes through I’m not gonna pay for my own Netflix account (I’m a broke uni student), I’m just gonna pirate what I want to watch. I wasn’t on my family’s Netflix plan for the shows and movies Netflix has to offer, I was in their plan for the convenience of legally accessing them. Pirating it is a bit more work but not so much so that I’d rather pay for my own account.
The burp at 6:12 was so sudden and violent that it hit me like a slap to the face and then the complete lack of acknowledgement made me feel like I was having a stroke. Always a good time with Charlie's content.
For now.. I mean what Netflix is doing can tip the scales. It'll either fail hard or not actually be that bad to their sales and viewership. And if it isn't that bad, other streaming services might follow up on doing it. I'm sure as hell sure Disney+ would do it.

They did the classic EA move of basically saying "don't buy if no likey". It's gonna be so funny in 3 months tops when they start crying about their low member numbers.
this new policy makes me think about like university students living at school on their parents netflix account like they really didn’t think this through
They'll be some they're after. How many students give all their mates access? I don't see the big deal. You get something - you pay for it. That some content is free nowadays makes some think it all should be. But there's a massive cost difference between Joe Bloggs on camera in his loungeroom and studio/office space, plant & equipment, multi level employees including professional actors, buying/making programs etc. Those of us who haven't had Netflix long always expected to pay for it and didn't give our passwords to every man and his dog. Sharing restrictions already hit in Canada and every person I know has unsubscribed. We already pay for multiple screens, why should it matter where they are?
Exactly if I’m paying the max price for multiple devices there’s no reason it should matter where they are. They should lower the price of premium since they’re asking you to pay even more to add someone else
Same here everyone in Canada I know has cancelled, we pay for multiple screens and they constantly up the price while taking away good shows and producing fucking garbage originals.

I wish people would stop forgiving companies when they backpedal on anti-consumerist changes. They still _did_ it. They still thought it was okay. They showed their hand, and they showed exactly how little they value their users. They _still want to do it._ The only reason they took it back is because they didn't expect the backlash to be as big as it was.
Conversely, you could say that consumers are expressing their support for better changes, and showing that they will reward good actions, regardless of motives.
I feel like a lot of people haven’t been forgiving with this decision. All the talk I hear is of unsubscribing because their catalog isn’t strong enough to keep them post change.
To be fair. Netflix always lost money. They've never been a good business. Netflix can only make money if they dominate the market and have no competition. Fantasy land. They should have come up with a better business model.
Honestly I’m glad that Craig mckraken left them after making one great show Because they probably would ruin his other projects And I’m also glad that woys rights weren’t bought by Netflix for the same reason
It's honestly funny, they said they never cancelled a successful show. Yet a move that proved to be successful when password sharing was the most successful thing for Netflix. Yeah they contradicted themselves.
They circumvented a Canadian law that prevents companies from gaining access to your IP address. You’re not supposed to be able to look behind your ISP in Canada

Im honestly surprised they havent yet. Altho at the same time i feel like all streaming companies wanna do this, but they r waiting to see the outcome with Netflix first
Piracy for me is better because the bitrate in visuals and audio you can get from a torrent is just superior than streaming services. There's also nothing using up all your internet. If multiple people are watching 4K Netflix, it affects ping in games and can slow internet. The only real reason I used Netflix was so I could save up storage space and because it's a little faster to just see something on Netflix and immediately watch it.
Funny Netflix story: Around 6 months ago my Netflix account actually got hacked and logged into by someone apparently in the UK. I reset my password did all of that and logged back on only to find that the only thing they did was cancel my subscription. Looking back on it whoever in UK did that, you are a saint. Much love.
do they think that password sharers are going to actually create their own accounts after this or something? how the hell do they think this is going to make them money
My favorite part is that people who travel for work, people who don’t have a permanent home, people who have multiple permanent homes and/or summer homes, etc. just aren’t allowed to have Netflix accounts.
I mean in fairness if somebody like Bill Gates/Jeff Bezos/Elon Musk had to pay for netflix for each house they lived in... I wouldn't really care. But, knowing from experience as an installer, rich people DO pay for things like netflix multiple times over, either for some weird reason like wanting each room to have it's own login or because they just didn't even realize it. When I was an installer I found so many people that had multiple active Netflix accounts paid for it was depressing. This is why services like netflix get away with being terrible, people with money just don't even pay attention to who they're giving that money... unless it's taxes, it's utterly amazing how they hate giving a single cent to the government but will waste money on unused netflix subscriptions.
@Metal Sign this is true, but the things they don't pay for are things that are publicly visible. Netflix might give them a free account so they tweet about their shows, but even if they do it's possible the person might still pay for subs without ever noticing. If it's a rolex, or a suit they'll be seen wearing it and rich people gather a lot of eyes. Elon drives Teslas around he likely didn't pay for because it's advertising for the company. You're right, rich people don't pay for stuff, but you'd be surprised how wasteful they are.
There are piracy websites that have pretty much every show and movie imaginable. So in addition to being cheaper, it is actually easier and more convenient to just pirate content than to manage a million different streaming services. Netflix should be grateful that anyone is paying for an account at all.
the netflix catalogue wouldnt suck so much if 90% of the content wasnt region locked. i get like the licensing and whatever but then when vpn ads slap you in the face with "use THIS service to be able to use netflix to its full potential" its hard not to consider it when swapping to another service
I'm Canadian-this whole thing has been an absolute disaster. I heard we were supposed to have until the 21st to prepare for this change, but it actually kinda? went into effect around the 8th or so-some people got kicked as soon as they announced the change. My grandmother, who is the one who owns our family account, never even got an email about the changes. If it wasn't for this being widely talked about she never would've known. Also, you have to pay extra just to watch stuff in 1080/4k now-and I also heard that if more than one person on the account owns a smart tv and nobody sets the primary location, a random tv will be picked. I am not sure how true that is, just something I heard. My mom got kicked even tho they are at the primary location...as of me writing this I STILL have access even though I live in my own place. It's a whole mess
well if they link your smart tv id to your account to stop u from password sharing because "you're not supposed to have more than 1 smart tv", then "a random tv will be picked" sounds like a thing
Step up, Canada, for the rest of us. Just abandon Netflix, nationwide! They’ll reverse it again. But, Amazon Prime has better shows, better movies (from a wider range of years) and it’s cheaper! Your mom will be able to get movies and shows from her own generation, as well as lots of new stuff for free. My favourite show is The Boys and I love the black and white classics like His Girl Friday with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, It’s a Wonderful Life, the Jimmy Stewart classic, and Hitchcock bangers, ALL FREE on Amazon Prime in the UK. Your selection will not be identical, but it will still be better than anything Netflix has. Besides, after the way they’ve treated the fans of their IP’s, (hiring writers who BOAST/Troll about not reading, playing the games, or watching the series or movies that their new shows are based on!?) my attitude is, “F*ck Netflix,” for acting like we ought to give a sh*t when I just don’t!
@@fortnitesexman : “It seems like a smart solution,” if you’re both dumb and greedy. I’d just FIRE their ass! And if they’d been BOASTING to the press about it, which seems to be standard practice for ALL IP’s at Netflix currently, I’d be issuing public apologies and trying to win back the rightfully offended audiences, confirming that I’d just fired the idiots who gave those interviews and that we will RESPECT the audience and the material they’ve come to love, from now on. I cannot tell you how excited I was for The Witcher, Star Trek, Stranger Things after season one; all ruined by Netflix’s apparent contempt for the source material and their locust-like willingness to take the names of our favourite IP’s only to ruin them for their own illogical, agenda driven, madness! they didnt even need to cut off everyone outside the house, they could have just done a "travel pass" where it costs you a little more to use it outside the house, they still get paid more for password sharing without making everyone want to jump ship
Did.... did they just forget what makes streaming sites popular?... 1- good content libraries 2- ease of access 3- Sharing with family/friends (Most Don't mind paying for extra screens if the price is fair) They are- getting rid of all of that one by one and acting like it's our fault lol

I think a funny response to this would for everyone who has an account to change their password to the same thing and just share their username in a list on reddit. When an account gets banned, cross the name off the list until Netflix has banned all of their own customers.

I imagine it would be pretty tricky to find the right balance between exposure and convenience vs. actual paying customers. By allowing and encouraging sharing you can gain exposure but this doesn't necessarily translate to profit if a sizable chunk of your potential market is essentially piggy backing the service for free.
Why does Netflix think that the people who already weren’t paying for their service back when it was good will suddenly pay for it now when it’s garbage
I think you're right on the money with your analysis. I'm in Canada, and I did "share" (by paying an extra $7 or $8 a month for a second device) my account with my parents, because it was convenient. The new policy came out last week, and instead of going through the rigmarole of separating the accounts, and paying even more money, I cancelled my account completely. Congratulations Netflix, you went from having someone effectively paying for 2 accounts to having someone pay for 0 accounts. The extra hassle made me step back, look at both how much I used my Netflix, and how much my parents used Netflix, and it being blatantly obvious that none of us were using it much. It wasn't worth continuing to pay for.
I did the same lol. I had premium which is already over 20$ now and as listed in the benefits we get the extra devices that can watch simultaneously, who are they to tell us where those devices can and cant be. we were already paying extra for it to begin with. another thing I'm curious is if those extra to accounts are just base accounts with adds since the upgrade is the same cost as the base sub
Yup, just cancelled mine too. The only reason I kept it was because my sister that’s in university far away from us, shares my account. I realized neither of us used it much so I canceled it and told my sister we’d get a different streaming service if she wanted.
Same here. When there was the initial talk about ending password sharing I remembered I still paid them for a premium account and the only person that used it was my old roommate. I shot them a message and told them to hurry and watch whatever they wanted to see because the account was cancelled. I'm not going to pay $20/mo all year to wait for Sandman to drop a new season and binge through it in a day. It just doesn't make sense.
My sister is a lone parent on a budget, so i pretty much only had a subscription for her to use it. I watched it for certain shows when they had a new season, but she was the primary user. Once i got the notice, I cancelled mine, too.
What upsets me the most about this is thinking about when I was in college and broke. There was no way I was gonna be able to afford paying for Netflix for myself and the town had nothing to do unless you were 21. So sharing an account with my family was a godsend. Now my grandma shares the account with my parents but she lives in a different house and save for the times we're able to visit her, she's home alone. All of this in hopes that everyone will get their own and they're really just ripping people off.
I mean, with all due respect, it's 10 usd a month and you're already paying for college. I find it hard to believe it was impossible to afford it if you still had time to actually watch series on Netflix.
@@Ollybollyk I can't speak to OP's situation, but "paying for college" in the US often means going into severe amounts of debt with student loans. Being in college does not mean you have a lot of disposable income.

It's exactly like how WotC justified their OGL updates as "We're looking to protect people from hate crimes, so in order to do that we're going to charge micro-transactions for our virtual tabletop, as well as taking 25% revenue from our most profitable advocates. "But it's all to protect you guys! We swear it's not a greedy pull!"
It's rather infuriating to be honest. Maybe it's because it's the way my mother used to talk to me, but I'd rather have someone give it to me straight that sugar coat a plate of dogshit and hand it to me.
I feel like these changes are just going to target people who aren't even sharing their passwords. For example, I work graveyard shifts at a gatehouse and watch Netflix during my shifts. I have lots of friends who commute to college and watch shows on the train. Now, all of us will lose access to the Netflix accounts we are paying for because of this change. And like Charlie said, this really screws with families who are divorced and share an account
just pay for like 5 accounts, to every where you go or COULD go, and you're good! Problem solved. You get access to a platform that decreases its library every year and expects people to pay more
It was hilarious when this rolled out cause both me and my wife as well as my parents were using my brothers account, as soon as this shit happened and me and my parents were kicked off my brother canceled his Netflix subscription. Looks like their plan is working and I guess it’s to die horribly
Hilarious that Charlie came up with a much, much better plan that Netflix could have used to cut down on password sharing a little that most people wouldn't actually care about. Netflix fumbling this as much as possible
At least Lily's Garden ads tried to be this weird sexual soap operas that have twists that could rival Shyamalan's. If that's not a bold move, I don't know what is
My entire circle is set to cancel their accounts when this goes through, so its OBVIOUS to netflix what the issue is. They cant say "well people left before the change! so its not the change at all!" No I want their numbers to tank day 1. And there's 6 netflix accounts, probably more with friends I havent talked to in awhile, because nobody ever says "Hey check out this cool netflix show!" If I see that in my texts, my first assumption is that its a scammer trying to get me to press a link
As a Canadian I am living far away from home while serving in the armed forces. Being able to use my parents Netflix while so far away from home and travelling abroad was always very convenient. Stupid that it’s being taken away from us in Canada.
I live in Quebec and every piece of media is talking about this right now. Over 1/2 of the population who was subscribed to Netflix are not anymore because of these changes. Its only one province from Cananda. I can't imagine this being a well put idea by corporation because they just created they're own downfall
Yup! and it will only get worse!!! They have no idea the ***tstorm awaiting them when they attempt this greedy BS in the US. Thanks for taking a stand and starting the ball rolling in Canada. We will carry the torch here as well.
I’m in Newfoundland and I know a whole bunch of people also just not paying anymore. I have no clue if it’s in the news here, but I assume these stats are gonna be similar worldwide when they roll it all out.
They were saying that so recently
My favorite part is that people who travel for work, people who don’t have a permanent home, people who have multiple permanent homes and/or summer homes, etc. just aren’t allowed to have Netflix accounts.
You also can't be a college student who comes home for breaks or summer

It's a whole mess

i mean, i get why they did it, and it seems like a smart solution if you suffer from tunnel vision
They’ve been trying to block VPN’s for years and basically used every trick in the book to squeeze their customers without ever, ONCE just stopping to look at their own end and ask, “Is the product we’re offering any good?” I mean, I’m not a producer but, if I heard one of my writers tell me they’d never read any of the Witcher books OR played any of the games, I wouldn’t even bother to ask them WHY they bothered to apply for the f*cking job then?

Rigamarole... now that's a word I haven't heard in a while
Yup, just cancelled mine too.

At this point, it feels like Netflix hired a mobile game marketing advisor and decided they could devise their entire business plan
Like Rockstar
OMG. You are right.
@YeaMan dude, make yourself a favor and try at least a little harder to scam people or...just gtfo of here.
Here, take a report for good luck.
At least Lily's Garden ads tried to be this weird sexual soap operas that have twists that could rival Shyamalan's. If that's not a bold move, I don't know what is
@@iranam1004 those ads are more interesting than the game itself
My entire circle is set to cancel their accounts when this goes through, so its OBVIOUS to netflix what the issue is. They cant say "well people left before the change! so its not the change at all!" No I want their numbers to tank day 1. And there's 6 netflix accounts, probably more with friends I havent talked to in awhile, because nobody ever says "Hey check out this cool netflix show!" If I see that in my texts, my first assumption is that its a scammer trying to get me to press a link
When the streaming service apocalypse gonna hit us hard I'll be sitting in my gigabit fiber fueled Usenet bunker and be prepared.
As a Canadian I am living far away from home while serving in the armed forces. Being able to use my parents Netflix while so far away from home and travelling abroad was always very convenient. Stupid that it’s being taken away from us in Canada.
Thank you for your service
It's not going anywhere. Apart from slowly circling the drain lol.
PAT is going to suck even more now….
Thank you for your service!
I agree Netflix content is 85% garbage
I live in Quebec and every piece of media is talking about this right now. Over 1/2 of the population who was subscribed to Netflix are not anymore because of these changes. Its only one province from Cananda. I can't imagine this being a well put idea by corporation because they just created they're own downfall
Yup! and it will only get worse!!! They have no idea the ***tstorm awaiting them when they attempt this greedy BS in the US. Thanks for taking a stand and starting the ball rolling in Canada. We will carry the torch here as well.
I’m in Alberta and I personally know 14 people who unsubscribed and over here it’s been talked about at work even
I’m in Newfoundland and I know a whole bunch of people also just not paying anymore. I have no clue if it’s in the news here, but I assume these stats are gonna be similar worldwide when they roll it all out. I cannot remember the last time me and my bf used the Netflix we share with his parents, so why would we bother paying when there’s already nothing there worth watching?
I’m from Georgia, I don’t know why that matters but I felt like saying it anyway
I went down to the smallest package😂
We won't be watching Netflix.... we'll be watching Netflix burn on Twitter.
Almost each time I went on netflix to find a specific show or movie they did not have it in their catalog.
I feel like Netflix makes it their job to do something unforgivable at least once each year.
So don't use it
2020 was cuties, I remember that one
