  • MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO - ranked as the highest-grossing pay-per-view of all time, with nearly $150 million in U.S. pay-per-view revenue reported to date. The news was out today, in conjunction with event promoters Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.
The SHOWTIME PPV presentation of THE ONE surpassed the previous record of $136 million generated by Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing event in 2007.
Preliminary reports from distributors show pay-per-view buys projected to be 2.2 million. While not fully reported from all distributors, the total buys could challenge the existing record of 2.48 million pay-per-view buys set by De La Hoya vs. Mayweather. The initial report immediately following the De La Hoya vs. Mayweather event in 2007 was 2.15. THE ONE has already exceeded the previous #2 event, the infamous World Heavyweight Championship bout between Evander Holyfield vs. Mike Tyson II (1.95 million, 1997).

A light heavyweight wants to fight a welterweight, this is disgraceful , why dont you move up to cruiserweight and fight a David Haye...Every fighter is obsessed with Floyd and beating him or that paycheck... absolutely pathetic ... Floyd probably whips his ass at 160 anyway.

      It's not that's It's an excuse.
It's the fact he's opponents get a handicap already with him being outta his prime and his brittle hands preventing him from going all out.
He's already fought people 10 pounds heavier and won.
But his opponents shouldn't of been overweight in the first place when they fought.
Castillo was 10 pounds over when they've fought both times, Canelo was over 10 pounds, and so were other fighters. He could've charged them money, but he didn't make a contract that penalized overweight.

You raise a very valid point. And from reading your other exchanges here, I think that you're informed enough to have a relevant opinion on the matter. However, there are some points that I want to put out there. First off, yes, Floyd does have the right to cap off the weight class that he wants to fight at. However, it still in my opinion puts blemishes on his legacy. When Manny Pacquiao fought Margarito at such a height and weight disadvantage, he took a major risk.

Yes Hagler never fought over 160. However, he fought with Hearns in spite of the height difference. Furthermore, Ali, Frazier, Norton and Foreman all fought each other regardless of advantages and disadvantages and wins and losses. You feel like Mayweather never avoided anyone or waited until they were past their prime. I can see your point because that is arguable.

I don't blame either fighter for it not taking place because this is still a business & we never know all the reasons why fights aren't made. Margarito doesn't deserve to be mentioned. Youre right. Tyson got paid 30 million when he fought holyfield back in 96. and floyd is still making around the 30 million mark for fights. His last fight was 41 million. but the value of 30 million in 96 was more than the value of 41million in 2013. So i agree that mayweather isnt really breaking box office when you think about those facts.

Oscar in his prime only gassed vs. Tito, and that was due to his hit and run strategy coupled with Tito's non-stop pressure. Floyd doesn't really pressure opponents, doesn't follow them around, especially more powerful fighters like Oscar. It would be for Oscar, similar to his Pernell fight. Remained active 1-12 the same. Sorry, Oscar did gas a bit vs. Mosley in first fight but that was an insane war of trading power punches and Mosley just held on to a bit more down the stretch.

He exceeded expectations and won those fights. Given, both guys were past their primes. Oscar's last great fight was against Fernando Vargas if you ask me. And Miguel Cotto never recovered from the Margarito beating. So when I look at Floyd and I see that all his opponents since 2007 are under 5'10", and that most of them didn't have the footwork, hand speed, foot speed and volume to pose a threat, it makes me question his legacy.

Regarding description: His fights did gross more than Le Hoya's and Holyfield/Tyson's to date. One must also consider inflation since those times. The price of the dollar has gone up, as it always does over time. Do you think gas is the same price as it was when Tyson and Holyfield fought? The more money the government produces, the less it is worth. This always happens over time throughout history. Floyd's fights may not really be exceeding, though the amount is remarkable no matter what.

Also, Trinidad fought Hopkins while giving away a 3 inch height advantage, and weight advantage as well... He still took the fight though he lost... And then Shane Mosley fought Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright, who both had significant height advantages... So you tell me, what's FLOYD'S EXCUSE?

Go look at post fight interviews with Larry Merchant in the 2000's. Floyd called out Mosley several times. Plus, in 99 they were negotiating to fight at lightweight but Mosley didnt want to do it because at the time Floyd wasn't a big draw. You gotta do your research man. No fighter is afraid of anybody, only promoters because they're afraid of losing money if their guy loses.

Didn't Canelo drop down to 155lbs? He was heavier than Floyd Mayweather in that fight. It appears that Bernard want Floyd Wayweather to pick up a lot of weight to slow him down. A horse runs 40 miles an hour and weighs 800 lbs. A deer runs the same but weighs 120. That deer with twice the weight wouldn't move as fats because the fat would slow him down. The horse would still be fast because it has more muscle. Floyd shouldn't distort his body to being 160 lbs.

As much as I'd like to argue you're right, Although JMM will be far down the ATG list, possibly out of the top 75, maybe not even top 100. Floyd's probably around 50-75 but he still lacks career defining fights and hasn't beaten any prime greats. He had his chance with prime Pac and he blew it, which will always haunt his legacy and rating as an ATG.
