- After years of ground growing in our yard, this raft-style Korean Hornbeam looks so healthy and very leafy! Eric began thinning out the leaves as an example of deciduous work done in the Spring, as part of a demo for the Redwood Empire Bonsai Society (REBS). He finishes the work in this video, and shares a critical step for developing a deciduous bonsai.

Sorry I missed your REBS talk. I was being lazy. I thought about bringing the exposed root JBP I bought off you last year for show and tell. It's looking great. I've been working on it with Adam Toth and it just keeps getting better and better! You did great work on that one as you have with so many trees 😊

Eric, thank you for another spectacular video.
I don't quite understand how long I should let new branches grow before cutting back to the second node. Waiting until the branch is established limits the number of cut backs per growing season. It also seems that trees are better served by trimming the entire tree to force new branch developing. I find partial pruning causes the tree to focus on the non pruned branches. Like leaving a sacrifice branch which seems to slow down the primary structure. I would love to know about how many "cut backs" I should be doing on healthy strong growing deciduous trees. For example elms seem to go and go and go while other trees like beech seem to shut down a bit from aggressive pruning.
Some trees seem to prefer new growth in the crotch rather than the tip of the cut branch.
I guess I'm due for a few more years of workshops.

This tree gave me anxiety looking at it I would have had no idea where to start
Just start by picking off dangling leaves. When I started I literally couldn't tell what I was looking at. First you uncover the base of a shoot then you uncover more. It's mind-blowing how dense they can get.
