Pretty sure the 5 speed has separate compartment for the trans oil for it, but the 6 speed does not. So, you could fill up the 6 speed from the shifter hole but don't even think you need to add it to shifter if you add it to the normal fill hole.

Why did you use white lithium grease? Doesnt it affect the plastic bushing/cap? Can you use other type of grease?

Do you know the ID and OD of the copper washer?

9956-21-800 is the part number for the copper washer. 18mm and 20mm I believe are the diameters.

Where does the oil go in the turret? Some people online have said theirs we're bone dry when they did their first transmission oil change. Also what does the oil do in there? I don't believe this is explained in the owners manual. I have a notchy 2nd/3rd gear upshift and random 3rd gear lock out ( up and down shift ) when cold/first start up. Clears up within like 5 minutes of driving but very annoying... Transmission oil was just done at Mazda dealer before purchasing it, same with diff. 35k miles only, 2014 6 speed.

If you start the video around 4:40 it kinda shows where it goes. Mine was very dry as well. Unfortunately I dont believe the dealership suctions and fills the turret when they drain and fill the transmission. There is a little cup where that first ball on the shifter sits and thats what you fill. The black plastic piece should move pretty freely and shouldn't be worn out. They do make a bronze cap to replace the plastic one if yours needs to be replaced. Make sure to grease it before putting it back in.

Great descriptions and video, just one question…. If I raise the front of the car on ramps which obviously raises the front of the car will it have any affect on amount of fluid the drains out? Or does it not really matter as long as I refill it also on the ramps?
    Thanks
    Neil

Hey Neil, ideally you want drain and fill while its level. If its not level when you fill it you could under fill it. If you put the front up on ramps you could then jack the rear up and put jackstands under the rear. That's how I did the clutch job on my old Na Miata.

Is this something you recommend on a regular basis?

Mazda recommends every 30,000 miles for the transmission and 35,000 miles for the differential but it really depends how you drive. I plan to replace the fluids a bit more frequently since most of the miles for my miata are driven pretty hard.
