Snowboarding World Champ Ester Ledecka was ranked 68th, but she stunned the crowds (and herself) to become the first athlete to win both ski & snowboard Olympic gold at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang 2018!

The best moment is when she finishes the race and has no clue what happened :D
The clue rushes in, where her belief can not go.
I laughed so hard at this especially since I watched it live. Everyone was confused, not just her 🤣
you think athletes can discern winning by 1/10 of a second?
you're saying "it's funny bc racers are timed to one-hundredth of a sec"
Anna Veith: "I'm going for the gold."
Ledecka: "Hold my snowboard."
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh goodie. another "hold my..." joke. how original.
@@LordDavidVader Oh goodie, another Star Wars related username. How original.
Für Anna Veith tut es mir leid. Sie hätte es verdient nach den Verletzungen aber so ist Sport.
Literally hold my snowboard and give me your skies, watch this
This has to be my favorite Olympic moment ever. Nobody, not even the person winning, has a clue as to what has just happened. This is why we watch sports!
Absolutely correct, one of my favorite moments of the Olympics and I am rooting for her again in the 2022 Olympics! Go Esther!
TRUE!!!!
Mine too.
Which kind of snowboarding is this !!! It is 🎿
Love it too.but from all Olympic moments there are some better like "Matthias Steiner", and not only because i m german..there are so much..and Ledecka s winning moment is hard to top,true..greetings
When the commentator says ''she is about to write a new page in Olympic history'' he doesn't realize that those words will transcend into a totally another dimenson after her run. Kudos Ester!
it is incredible how he calls it right in the perfect moment...
Yeah. This was a fantastic call for a fantastic performance
The call is absolutely brilliant.
"What's another recovery from the youngster?" Full of love and no cynicism. Beautiful.
@@robinf3817 This is pure sport. "She is taking gold". Its like magic.
Great reporters for this surprise!
*12 minutes ago she achieved another golden medal in Beijing*
We're so proud 🎉🤘🏼
She's a monster athlete. Congratulations!
congrats - she's legend
(and fearless)
+ 5. and 4. place :-)
probably one of the most incredible wins in the history of the Olympics
except of the mine
She race from like almost the 50th spot
The Aussie chap in the speed skating was pretty incredible
@@adamwyatt-lowe2833 I was Steven Bradbury the first Australian gold medal in the history of winter Olympics in 2002
@@bunt1691 yes. Almost no one was broadcasting. Veith was already considered the winner. Got everyone by surprise
2:07 "You're the winner..." "Naaaaaaaaah" . . . Priceless.
This came as a complete surprise to everyone in the sport; and obviously no one was more surprised than Ms. Ledecka herself.
And she then went on to win gold in snowboarding, as expected -- making her the first Olympian to win gold in two different sports at the same Games
Maybe winter games but Carl Schuhmann of Germany won 3 gold metals in gymnastics and a gold in wrestling in the 1896 Athens Olympics.
THE moment of 2018 Olympics
👍👍👍👍
And that she won snowboarding later as well
Shawn White has entered the chat
@@allmight1359 she has something he will never have a gold in gs ski race
Ester Ledecka skied 26th which meant the course was already broken up by the previous 25 skiers and far more difficult to ski. No one, and I mean no one, has any chance of winning that far down the draw...and on borrowed skis..... no chance ! She had previously never been anywhere near a podium during the skiing world cup season. And yet...!!!
Her "mistakes" were her response to skiing at the limits of human ability under those circumstances. During those 1minute 21.11 seconds she was well and truly "in the zone".. a special place that transcends conscious thought and lets the body do what it must do to win. Her winner's mind was already there, as the top snowboarder, and it was harnessed for this incredible athletic feat under the most difficult circumstances.... so I can understand her thought of "what have I done???"
yep, pretty much!
Hi I'm completely amateur - could you point out where she did mistakes and what did they mean?
@@zonedutopiaI think the moments she hit the flags
@@zonedutopia She had a couple of big skids and that's going to bleed speed and also lengthen the course for her by a hair. As far as the original post goes, race temperature was 16 degrees F so I'm sure it held up fine. And the reason she won (this is from Bode Miller, not me) is she took a more aggressive line to begin and shortened the course (even with the mistakes) on everyone. She's proven since then that she's a legit downhiller and this is her pace. And even before this she never considered herself just a snowboarder that ski's. She considered herself a dual sport athlete.
I watched this broadcast live on CBC when it happened. They said something to the effect of "The Americans (NBC) have cut their broadcast to somethings else by this point, they aren't even showing this." The skiers skied in order of their world ranking, so I guess they figured no one was catching up to the top competitors and started covering another sport (at least on the main channel). Just to give you an idea of the magnitude of this upset. And then Ledecka would win gold in her snowboarding event (parallel giant slalom) a few days later!
That is correct: NBC cut to another sport. To their credit, they did go back and show this run just after the fact. In a way it was perhaps more dramatic as they had to explain why they were going back to skiing and that this was really a great snowboarder that just shocked the skiing world. Either way it was way cool.
Even though I'm in the USA I hardly ever watch the NBC broadcast. I prefer to watch the live streaming feeds which means that I was watching the coverage this clip was from and saw Ester's run live. The tough thing for me is time shifting my day for two weeks so I'm awake when the events are occurring.
Incredible! This is the kind of thing that makes the Olympics fun to watch.
👍👍👍👍
The Swedish broadcasters did the same thing. They declered Veith the winner and ended the broadcast on their main channel one racer before Ledecka started.
And she was on borrowed skis, that's what I remember. She had an olympic skier's last year's skis
She had the skies of Mikaela shiffrin. She decided not to race and gave the material to here.
That's a myth guys. She had second hand skis that were returned to the manufacturer presumably by Shiffrin - which is pretty normal practice that the lesser known skiers pick among those returned skis - but Ester made the skis her own for some time and fine tuned them. It was not a last minute ski exchange:-) What is true though is that Ester's boot was broken for the race but they decided to risk it because she was used to it. It could have completely broke any moment.
not true

@@simontaticek5520 Kick rocks
I like how they’re really giving her the credit for being a 2 sport Olympian even though she wasn’t expected to win the race at first. And their reaction to her gold medal time is amazing.
2:30 Always appreciated when the commentators take the time to learn how to pronounce the names correctly.
👍👍👍👍
Přesně Judy
The commentators were absolutely brilliant.. you don't see that sort of emotion in the press box very often. And that isn't even the main point of the video, I just wish more were like this
The thing that was funny about this was that it wasn't even a fluke. It wasn't like she beat them because they all did poorly, she was apparently so inexperienced that she attempted turns no veteran would even try due to the likelihood of failure and nailed them, earning a lot of time.
Ironically, Ledecka is now ranked higher in skiing than she is in snowboarding, despite having been a better snowboarder for most of her career (including here).
Yes. It was basically a controlled fall watching her going down that thing 🤣
@@yahopostinguy429 Being overly aggressive is a sign of inexperience in certain fields, this being one of them.
No one else attempted the line she took because there was a high likelihood of them wiping out. She simply didn't and therefore won. It's a fun story either way.
I think people call that a fluke haha
@@yahopostinguy429 excellent analysis.
She is also more raw than others, I would add. With more strength, the natural confidence level is higher - she could balance her mistakes with raw body strength due to her hard training routines.
Majority fans think it's all in legs (just like in hockey, for example).
The overall body strength is the deciding factor in athletic disciplines. Every muscle must be trained and exercised because in the end, they all work like one perfect machine.
And there are many, even great - athletes who do not like the weight room.
Ledecka is supremely conditioned in comparison to other competitors because she puts time and effort into the entire body conditioning.
There are some exceptions to the rule in history of athletic sports but if you want to really be the best, talent is only a fraction of the success.
Hard work is the key
@@mitsanut5869 I saw Ester water skiing and sail boarding. She's ripped...
Honestly how cool was this? Race of her life, so humble that she first thought it was more likely a timing error than an actual gold medal. As far as winter Olympics in my life, this is right up close to Dan Jansen finally winning gold. So awesome
This was one of the most wonderful and genuine stories of the entire Olympic history
So cool she's still dedicated to both sports. She won all 3 snowboard parallel slalom races she entered the past season, then won the World Cup final Super G at Saalbach, Austria.
cant imagine how the silver medal person felt
she was pretty cool with it, since Anna Veith just had recovered from a major injury and it felt like winning for her (additionally she already was olympic champion four years before). One can't be mad about Ledecka winning this gold medal :D
cant imagine how the person on the 4th place felt
@@xaKristyy Ouch
@@xaKristyy She was only 0.01 behind 3rd place too as you can see from the standings at 0:27
She's Incredible.
👍👍👍👍
@@changeeyecolor3891 Nice!
More than 2 years later, I still watch this video from time to time. Such an amazing woman who wrote the history when she was just 22 years old.
Fantastická Ester, děkujeme..👍👏🍄
Coach: let's work for the 15th or so..
Ester: ok.
And I don´t undestand that Laureus World Sports Award for Sportswoman of the Year was Serena Wiliams (even if she could be equal she had to win olympic games in tennis and ping - pong)...
Ledecká nebyla dost černá 😄
her shocked face is so cute lolololol
Downhill skiing has to be THE sport for maniacs. I mean, i would probably die from the air resistance at those speeds
This is Super G. Downhill is faster.
I remember watching on NBC and Dan Hicks said something like, “Well, all of Austria, not to mention all of the world, all of the media, INCLUDING US, were assuming Anna Veith would be the winner.” NBC was airing figure skating at the time, and as they’re going to commercial break, Terry Gannon, the figure skating commentator, says “We hear there’s a surprise at the women’s Super G.”
When NBC comes back from break, they show the super g course, and Dan Hicks says, “Well, these are the Olympics, and anything can happen, and it just happened in the women’s super g.” To quote another of Dan Hicks’ famous quotes, “Just when you think you’ve seen it all!”
google Emil Zátopek....you may like his tripple at 5k, 10k and marathon.
I met her at a hotel in Switzerland during my summer vacation, and she was nice! You can tell she's such a sweetie by just seeing her face!
She even shocked herself - probably well aware if the errors on her way
Later, for a different ski race, after a reporter asked Lindsey Vonn how she thought she would do...
Vonn: "Well, there are no snowboarders here today, so..."
This is still my favorite Olympics moment ever.
One of the greatest achievements in Winter Olympics history. Brilliant.
I never get tired of seeing her reaction.
Great story. It’d been a long time since Czech alpine skier (male or female) had been on the Olympic podium, and this was great for the Czech Republic as a whole 🇨🇿
Hahhaa she was like:"did i make it into top 20 ? What happened ?"
The first one to compete in skiing and snowboarding at the same olympics...
And the last one to win both.
I'm so proud I'm come from Czech republic, I'm proud on her 🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿🇨🇿
She won even with a pretty big mistake. Imagine if it was a totally clean run. Incredible!
Commentator:"Two massive errors."
, c , 055 ..........:-.'.
Czech commentators actually were like "Oh a great mistake from Ledecka, another mistake there" but when they saw the timer, they almost went nuts and cheered her up! 😂
Course the previous record was made in a non blue line blizzard whiteout mini avalanche and 2.2 earthquake at turn 5 by a one-legged legged snowman named.... Frosty....well done 👍
One of the best athlets, and a very kind person. Had a little talk with her on the skilift today, she is so nice
Cameraman: Ur the winner
Ester Ledecka: No
Next Olympics czech hockey team - 1st line - Pastrnak, Krejci, Ledecka.
Srdečne gratulujeme!! 🤗 skvelý výkon!!
can we get this without the commentators please??
lol the Uhhhhhhhha! in the background while she barely hangs on @ 0:39 seconds...I know that feeling!
I was coming to say this exact thing, she was pushing HARD to hold that corner.
simply fantastic....give me chills totally! wow!
She is amazing. I love her so much.
Can you imagine winning the Olympic gold by 0.01 second.....
The commentators were brilliant!!!
Show show
Gold in snowboarding and skiing is nuts
She is so cute!
I suspect the Czech brothers will stone me for this, but I still feel incredibly sorry for Anna Veith. She went through miserably hard times before those Olympic games, like injury and stuff, and then lost by the smallest possible of margins.... Don´t get me wrong, I really do deeply respect Ledecka for her talent and achievment, but if I could turn back time, I would absolutely let Anna Veith win this one particlar race.
That's not what it's about. After what she went true, second place is huge. But, many men and women Went through a lot, doesn't mean they should deserve it more.
You definitely have to feel for Anna a bit here, but I think she herself recognized that even a silver medal was an amazing achievement after all the injuries she had to fight back from. She seems to be doing great, just had her second child a month or so ago.
@@DarklordZagarna Velká gratulace k druhému dítěti krásné Anne z Česka !!

Ester Ledecka:"Hold my beer."
I come back to this video again and again, every time I need a smile on my face.

A jak koukala jako telátko, když zjistila, že je zlatá...
...opravdová krása sportu!
Even though i am Austrian and i was watching live on TV, when i recognised Ester had the chance to win i rooted for her. Because this is a moment which probably happens 1 time in 100 years.
Hi from Prague. IT had never happenned before. Ever.
Correction: not golf, but ski
Wow, can't believe I missed this epic moment! Legendary!
Beautiful moment! Great moment of sport
i still come back to this as i cannot believe this happened, incredible story
and again haha
That makes me smile EVERY time I watch it. So cool!
In some ways I can understand why the cameraman wanted more of a reaction from her but...
Come on her reaction was perfect.
Doing her thing and enjoying it. Gold is only a bonus. Self achievement is the thing.
she made a lot of mistakes in that run, but she was like an avalanche
She was about to write a new page in history indeed!
She actually joined to fill the numbers for the ski team. She is a snowboarder Gold Medalist. She was not expecting to even qualify but instead got Gold. Love this.
1:41 the way she finished the race total boss!
One of the greatest moments in world sport IMO.
I watched this and laughed because the Austrian chick was already announced as the winner and she already assumed to be the winner: . Congratulations Ms. Ledecka!
Ester Ledecka of Czech and Petra Majdič of Slovenia are the two most inspiring athletes, male of female, summer or winter, of all time! Just amazing women.
Petra won a bronze medal in the 2010 Lake Placid winter Olympics after competing in four 1.4km skiing sprints. So what you ask?...well.... she skied all the races with 5 broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
"She earned the highest praise from other skiers, staff and the media for her amazing bravery as she attended the medal giving ceremony with a tube in her chest" - holy expletive.
Ester Ledecka made it possible for snow boarders to sit at the same table as the stars of alpine skiing.
This is my favourite Olympic moment ever.
This is just hustokrutopřísný!
the best reaction ive seen!
Legend!
The only time I've ever seen anyone win Olympic gold with absolutely zero reactions. XD
I love to watch this for encouragement when the going gets tough.
Commentators were so busy arrogantly discussing here technique that they forgot to notice that Ledecka was ahead of her competitors. Complete lack of professionalism!

It’s just so tear jerking when you see someone so focused. This is what these people do as their purpose in life. Their gift. To see a human do some crazy stuff is just so amazing for the human race. The things we can do, it’s like building a skyscraper or a going to the moon. We are such incredible things.

Look at Anna Veith - I am sure that at the time of this run she was absolutely one hundred percent sure that she has the gold medal... and this happens.
Yeah thats probably why that was her reaction. She knew she had gold in the bag and suddenly it got snatch away. So probably for her, that person deserves the gold medal more.
