Nice! Going through these well known songs through the lens of modes is super helpful to me. Many “aha” moments for me here. Analysis like this makes modes real and very relevant not abstract ideas. Thank you for this and all your videos! I’m devouring each one!
This is out of my pay grade for now, so I just tuned in to listen to the nice sounding piano. I'm practicing modes along with my scales, but I'm not going in the usual progression. I start with Lydian, Ionian, Mixolidian, Dorian, Aeolian (with harmonic and melodic minors), then Phrygian then Locrian. That way there is the outlier, the Lydian which sharpens the 4. Then it just flattens the notes one by one: 7, 3, 6, 2, 5. I then add a flattened 4, but I don't know what it's called. And then there is the flattened 1. When I get to the next level, at least the notes will be in my fingers, and ears.
Love this exploration. In Norwegian Wood, that switch between mixolydian and dorian is very bluesy/rock n roll. They're the same scale except for the third. And when both thirds are present, it's super bluesy. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any pop tunes using lydian (except maybe the Simpsons theme). You did Maria (from West Side Story), but that's musical theater. Does anyone in pop use lydian?
Strongly disagree about Michelle. The Bb sounds like a flat 6, going to the dominant A, implying D minor (minorization of the D major scale which is arguably the real scale of the song)
Question I tried to locate that app you use, chordi was it?.. Is it from the Apple store, or is it a download from a website? Thanks for your response I am grateful for your channel P.S. I like the glasses.

I like the Dorian mode. It tends to have a serious and sometimes hopeful sound to it.
that's exactly how i experience it too.

excellent. i think that's a great order to acquire modal familiarity.
Thx Chris

Totally: the Gm7 contributes to the ambiguity of wether it’s the proper IV in Dm or if it’s working as a IVm in D
