- In this episode of Walks in Warsaw we invite you to explore Śródmieście - the central district of the capital city of Poland. This modern and forward-looking part of the city is the dynamic heart of the contemporary capital where the majority of the city’s hotels, restaurants and bars, but also government buildings, skyscrapers and places of commerce are situated.
We invite you to explore the Palace of Culture and Science - the notable high-rise building built in 1955, to go to the roof terrace with beautiful sunset views of Warsaw and then to walk throught the Downtown to the Warszawa Centralna railway station and to the Złote Tarasy commercial, office, and entertainment complex. We will see many skyscrapers designed by famous architectural studios such as Foster + Partners, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Daniel Libeskind.

Na Karowej chodzilem do ogolniaka, a na slimaku rozbilem pare samochodow scigajac sie na zakretach. Tez sie ciesze jak Warszawa sie zmienila na kozysc. Nie ma juz tego syfu i tej wschodniosci co bylo po wojnie. Orginalnie jestem z Powisla. Pozdrowienia. Jednak miejsca urodzenia a sczegolnie wyrastania wplywaja na nasza mentalnosc. Mimo miastowego wychowania jestem zawsze bardzo przychylny wszelkim sloikom i naplywowej mlodziezy. Moja dewiza kto chce byc warszawiakiem/ warszawianka to bardzo prosze! Ciesze sie ze Warszawa przyciaga!

Even if you burst, even if you crack, but Stalinka is in the first place, wherever you look, but a glance at the Stalinist building falls and attracts attention. No matter how the Poles hated the USSR, the building of that time remains a symbol anyway. Soulless glass and concrete do not have that appeal and architectural value.

Everything is great, there is only one mistake. Poland is not an Eastern European country. Just like Germany, and Austria are not western. We are all Central Europe. And according to the political division, broadly understood West. And by no means belittle the countries of Eastern Europe. But so basic mistakes, and so often made. They irritate me a lot.

I am Polish and I like the term "Eastern Europe" which is in the opposition to the Western Europe. Let us put it clearly that Russia is not in Europe, it is in Euro-Asia geographically and since bolshevik's revolution also mentally there. In the past, at least the elites were trying to be European. It is over now. I do not like the concept of the Central Europe because it was coined by Bismarck Germany to designate the sphere of German domination. In Europe, there is Western Europe = former Roman Empire and Eastern Europe = the part of Europe which fell into influence of the Roman Empire and stayed culturally there. In this sense both Germany and Poland belong to Eastern Europe. Greece is clearly Western Europe. Sweden is Eastern too.
Whether we include Russia as a part of Europe or not, Poland still is in the central part of it. And go ahead and try to tell a German they're from Eastern Europe. They'll laugh in your face.

You would do well to look at a map of Europe at least once before you write something. For me as a Pole, taking into account how many bad things happened to us during the Second World War and during the occupation by the Russians, it is terribly insulting to call us an eastern country.
@@anulkaaw Well, germans were always difficult, we should not bother too much. It is true that some parts of Germany around Rhine river can be considered Western but most of it is Eastern. The easy way out is Northern Europe, Poland clearly belongs to the Northern Europe, this is mainly geographic distinction because culturally there are only two
big countries in the Northern Europe: Poland and Germany (Russia is excluded from Europe):)
@@Rene_Moor3095 MittelEurope just stinks because of Bismarck and Hitler - I have strong negative connotations. What about Northern Europe? Europe in people's mind is equal to EU, so Poland is always to the East of Paris.
@@Rene_Moor3095 The term Central Europe = Mittel Europa is polluted by Prussia/nazi concepts. Would it be better to say Northern Europe for Poland? In People's mind Warsaw is always to the east because it is on the east side in EU. Now, if Poland is East of Europe then Russia is out of Europe:)

Austria in today's shape is rather Western Europe, Germany is the case apart - neither in the West nor East. So maybe indeed it is some kind of Central Europe if we define the Central Europe to be Germany? Poland is not in this category because of long democratic tradition (west) which is basically foreign to the second and third Reich. Today, we are indeed pretty close, still freedom is the major concept for Poles, law for Germans :)

@@thaddausgriech4542 It is not Geography which decides, it is culture. Europe ends maybe 200-500 km to the east from Poland, nothing can be done about it as one can not change the past. But as time passes, Europe can expand eastward.
Austria and Germany are western european countries, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria are eastern european countries.
