I doubt we ever abandon gas entirely. Certainly no time soon. Electric will always have limitations -- leaving a market for gas. There will always be a market for anything film-related. Even years later, Scooby-Doo, Ghost Busters, Star Trek, & Star Wars are raking in cash. So I wouldn't be worried anytime soon. And Vegas is a great place to sell dreams and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

I totally agree with Tyler about the Taurus. When it debuted in late 1985 it turned the car industry upside down. The aerodynamics, the composite headlamps, and it was a solid, reliable car that could be configured anywhere from barebones without even air conditioning in the first year or two to fully loaded with electronic gauges and climate control and dual power seats. Very roomy, comfortable for long drives, and efficient for the era.
Bob was asking where they all went: I think they just all got used up. Not from being bad cars because if you did the standard maintenance they were super reliable. But people really did buy these and keep them 10 years and rack up over 200,000 miles on them, to the point they were just worn out and not even worth trading in so they were either parted out or crushed.
Biggest mistake Ford ever made: the 1996 redesign making the damn Ford "oval" the styling theme of every millimeter of the Taurus and Sable. That KILLED sales in the late 90s!!!

Also people tend not to sink money into an older car if they're not emotional about it. For example, the Ford EXP/Mercury LN7. When those had a problem after 10 years, you fix that, what do you have? A Ford EXP.
I don't think the Tauruses had anything wrong with them, but a whole lot of younger people (who aspired to Jeeps and Blazers etc etc) just thought they were terribly dull and uncool cars, and I fear they were basing that on who they saw driving them and what they thought of them. Which to me is no way to judge a machine, but it happens, doesn't it?

    • @theundergroundlairofthesqu9261

Oh, and "used up and thrown out" is what happened to the vast majority of Checker Cabs -- and given the miles per year in taxi service, it happened very quickly, and now there are very few Checker Cabs left.

At least it ended on a good note Bob. ( The Taurus) I live in Wichita and drive a 2000 Ford Taurus SE Wagon with the DOHC and love it. Interior is perfect and every option works. It was a one owner farmers car until last year. Aside from needing a bumper cap due to a recent hit and run it is like new inside and out. I have seen a few online lately and nice ones run $4,000 to $6,000 with low miles. I love the "Checker Cab", Blues Mobile, DeLorean, and yes even Kitt. I miss living in Henderson on Black Mountain. • @pt008

I thought - at least how I understood it being used for decades - that "hooptie" is not a judgment of status, desirability, coolness etc. but of the CONDITION. A hooptie is a barely-running rustbucket with dents, mismatched panels, ripped vinyl roof, sagging headliner, bald tires and a wire-tied exhaust. I don't know why people let Poopie hijack the word for his channel. OH NO MY BMW CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON (Of *course* I'm jealous)

  • @FarrellMcGovern
    @FarrellMcGovern 2 роки тому +1

I rode in those Checker Cabs in NYC any number of times. They ranged from posh to scary in terms of the condition of the back seat! And make sure that your Crown Vic has the modification to the bolt in the gas tank area so they don't puncture the gas tank if you are rear-ended, you don't to up in flames.

  • @charlesrary5320
    @charlesrary5320 2 роки тому +1

I've owned 5 Taurus vehicles in my lifetime. Each of them had over 300,000 miles on the odometer by the time I got rid of them (with the exception of one that had an unfortunate run in with a deer late one night). The first generation had some transmission issues (which Ford later worked out), but other than that they were great quality cars.

  • @nascargas

Of all the Hoopties in this parking lot...the Checker is not. It lasted 30 in production and another 30 in service. Thats 60 years of Checker where the Crown Vick only made 35 years?
Leary of calling a Crown Vic a Hoopties...but the Checker definitely is not. The Rolls? After all the problems Bob has had with his Rollers? They are all uber-expensive Hoopties.
As far as I can remember the first car ever referred to as a hooptie was an early 70s GM 4 door.

Gasoline engines, especially in older cars, will never go away. There's a whole cottage industry of young 20-somethings who have YT channels where they go pull OLD cars literally out of the woods and get them running after they've sat for 40 years and had trees grow up thru them. I follow many of them on here.

I just could feel that something is changing fast these days. It doesnt matter that there are 70 years of oil left in the ground because things have started to change no matter what regarding our vehicles. But i for sure know that it was a GREAT time. I love this, but have always had a problem with hoovies hooptie classification... A hooptie is car that is generally a reliable vehicle, but this one has been abused to the point it's mechanically falling apart but still driving... a beater is physically damaged or rusted vehicle, that runs... the best cars are what I call superbeaters... cars that run great but have little non important flaws... the eggplant is a super-beater... most of what hoovie buys are survivors. Cars that break on their own, much sooner than they should are lemons... the rolls is an expensive lemon. The checker is a survivor... the crown vic probably a superbeaters, depends how well cared for the mechanics are...
The Northstar while 10 years ago were a car that when needed fixing was difficult the head gasket issue wasn't so prevalent... I regularly saw these motors go 200-250-300k... but only recently have the low mileage ones start having issues... thats because the heads gaskets are drying out and much more prone to leak because it's a 20+ year old car... and most of them that had miles quick are in the yards already and the low mileage ones are breaking much sooner... they are only a a ticking time bomb because of age... this is why I don't buy cars under 100k that are over 20 years old... haven't been driven enough, every one I get gives me trouble because the age old saying, the worst thing you can do to a car is let it sit

    They're all hoopties.
That being said; I only buy hoopties.
    Examples I own right now:
1988 TOYOTA 1 ton Box Truck 151,000 miles on it, 22 R-E 4 cylinder. I paid $1700 for it. Still running great.
2000 Mercedes Benz E430 171,000 miles on it. I paid $300 for it. Still runs great.
1990 CUSHMAN GT-1, 8 Horsepower Kohler Magnum almost 10000 hours on it. Equivalent of 50000 or 55000 on a normal vehicle engine. Runs great. I paid $1850 delivered.
(It's an enclosed golf cart with a dump bed)
I bought 2 used hooptie riding mowers CRAFTSMAN GT5000 & MASSEY FERGUSON 2606.
Parts on the last 3 are becoming unobtainium, but I still use them for their intended purpose.
As for the future, not all of us can afford, or even want an electric vehicle.
Electric vehicles are charged by coal burning energy plants, built in factories that aren't all electric, the batteries are a biohazard, so how they're less harmful to the environment is a good question....
You want to charge via solar? 1 fast charging station would require 23 acres of solar panels.
    It's more about government control.
Say you want to travel across the USA....Gas/diesel fill up and go.
Electric....plan your trip around charging stations.... are they available...?
Find something to do while charging your vehicle. You've added days to your trip due to rage issues.
    Petrol will never die.
The love for classic cars aka hoopties will never die.

I think you'll run out of parts to fix movie cars before people stop caring about them, as long as there are people who love classic entertainment. It's unfortunate that very few if any new hero vehicles are being created though. Gone are the days of TV shows and movies where a vehicle was almost as important or iconic as the starring actor/tress. Even if they were electric you can still give them character, but they just don't anymore.

  • @Spokavriel

Unless your certain your power for charging electric cars is hydro electric and nuclear the carbon footprint even for Wind (Due to the blade break down) is still higher per full recharge than the internal combustion engine.. I'd take any Hooptie over a Tesla. And technically a Ford Taurus is the only car I have ever owned. It was wrecked and I paid my mom not to throw it away but it was technically in my name for 10 years. Edit: She used it for storage in that time and it wrecked the interior I ended up letting it go because it needed everything but new exterior metal in the end.
