What is the function of a heavy back? I didn't hear any obvious trait that stood out with a close mic recording. Would it be more pronounced in a large room or hall?

sound like Smallman guitar which is very thick back and side.
That's a great sounding guitar. Proving what? Weight, stiff back and sides let the top do the work?

well, that is much of what the theory is. It's a bit more complicated. An upcoming video should cover these things.
