To be fair, coming up with an idea that wasn't necessary and would've been shit even if 100% successful that then directly led to someone's death is a pretty valid reason to hate someone, even if it wasn't the only factor at play.

The fact that somebody like HBO hasn't tried to create a documentary or a dramatized documentary about WWE in the 90s and early 00s. Cornette, Russo, Vince, and all the controversies and stories behind the scenes. All the while wrestling was at its all-time high with fans.
I'm guessing it's because whoever made it would be sued in MINUTES, knowing the people involved

The problem with Russo is he genuinely came into the business and wanted to make it better and feel bigger. Once he saw the show he saw it as a joke and ran with it. So in Cornette's and many others' eyes, Russo destroyed what made Wrestling actually good.

@@quincykearney9862 but u can also pinpoint that Vince didn’t like the wrestling part of the business, just the entertainment aspect. He was so engaged with only popping ratings that he would neglect the wrestling part. When things are good he wants all the credit, when things go bad, it was someone else’s fault or he didn’t get a chance to write the show by himself. Jim and Russo are similar in that their greatest strengths were also their greatest weaknesses but from opposite sides, cornette was stuck in the 70-80s Memphis style of wrestling where as Russo was stuck in the Jerry springer- Howard stern style of entertainment writing

@@danielsims916 you have a good point about that. Do you also have realized that the wrestling business was changing. Vince Russo know the WWE have to change. Look how WCW was killing the WWE.
WCW did the same thing once Hulk Hogan sign with WCW. They started to bring in cartoony gimmick for Hulk Hogan. Some of the fans started to boo Hulk Hogan because they were fed up with the cartoony gimmick. Eric Bischoff told Hulk Hogan he needs to turn heel if you want to get over. I think these two guys are just from different worlds. Cornette is an old school wrestling "love of the game" type, and Russo is basically a reality TV producer. He's got a great sense of the psychology of television and what makes people stay tuned to a TV show. Jim thinks the psychology of the matches themselves should be the draw and understands what makes a wrestling match compelling. They both are good at what they do, but their mentalities clash. Also Vince is kind of slimy and Jim is kind of crazy.

Probably the best I've ever heard it put but it also makes me a little sad that if these two actually did get along or even get along just enough they could have been similar to the bears when coach Ditka and coach Ryan didn't get along hardly at all but together they did coach one of the greatest teams of all time and if Russo and Corny actually could just fake the funk for the sake of a good product who knows what all they would have been able to do in the business together

It's a small blip on the radar, but the tasteless "Oklahoma" gimmick that Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara (who played the character) created on WCW television was what soured me against the Russo camp. Not only was this a blatant shot at Jim Ross (a close friend of Jim Cornette, and as the Head of Talent Relations in WWE, was responsible for scouting and developing talent), but it also made fun of JR's real-life Bell's Palsy condition. Making fun of a person's real-life medical condition is already a line crossed, not to mention being a malicious middle finger directed at a former employer. Cornette actually confronted Ferrara over it, but surprisingly, Ferrara admitted it was in bad taste instead of following Russo's trademark "it's just a prank, bro, get over it" attitude.

Russo wanted to do new things with new ideas, but he spit on all the traditions of the old way, and in so doing also spit on the intelligence of the fans. Cornette and Russo have argued and clashed several times during their run in WWE(then WWF). You can sense that just from Cornette's interviews. Russo had a booking style that was more storyline over the wrestling. That doesn't work because your working for a wrestling promotion. Cornette's booking resonates with me. Naturally you want more in-ring wrestling action than storylines. In Bret Hart's words, realism is needed for the in-ring action. Performance is what makes the pro wrestler.

All the people who worked with McMahon and are outspoken about it say this. And as Pat Patterson once said, no matter who's on the creative team, the WWF only has one booker and that's Vince McMahon.

And while Jim has a very deep passion for the business, which I can respect, I can absolutely not give him any more respect than that because...why the hell would you want to actively KILL someone because their view on the business is different than yours, even if it's polar opposites in this case? He hates Russo for "keeping TNA from being competitive with WWE", yet TNA surpassed 2 million viewers when Russo was writing their TV.
Much like people say Russo never takes the blame for any mistakes, does Cornette? On 2 occasions he opposed the creative direction which resulted in ratings growth, and ultimately record high viewership for those companies.
It seems like everything Cornette attributes negatively to Russo, can actually be attributed to Cornette. The firings, the writing not getting talent over, the companies going down the tubes etc.

Which company did Cornette drive down the tube?
Smoky Mountain? An old school style territory that was based in one of the poorest areas of the country, and that ran right next to WCW's towns in an era when WCW was undergoing a big renaissance? With no backing from billionaires or multi millionaires? No national television?
Russo managed to somehow bring down a billionaire's wrestling company who had people like Hulk Hogan, Hall, Nash, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, Sting, Goldberg, Bret Hart, Scott Steiner and Booker T under contract all at the same time. A company that had three time slots in one of the biggest national TV networks in the country. You gotta be a really special kind of person to manage to somehow put a promotion like this out of business.
People love to talk about how great TNA's ratings were in that first Russo run, but what about the second one?

@@theazureknight9399 SMW to name one, and that was advertised on WWF TV as well as borrowing WWF talent like HBK and Undertaker on occasion.
Cornette's writing also enabled 83 Weeks to become a thing, with RAW sinking to (at the time) its lowest ever ratings in 1996-1997. It's no coincidence that once Cornette was off creative, both in WWF and TNA, they peaked within the next 2 years.
Russo didn't bring down WCW. The ratings improved while he was there. TNA's ratings hit record highs during Russo's second run (peaked in 2011), not his first.

@@TheNextStep851 SMW borrowed Shawn and Taker for the big shows once in a while, it's different from having possibly one of the best rosters in wrestling history signed to long term contracts like WCW during the Russo era. Not to mention the keys to a billionaire's coffers. I already explained on my previous comment the reason why SMW was set up for failure from the beginning regardless of booking.
Russo's success during the Attitude Era was due to him hotshotting like never before, him stealing from ECW, him stumbling into the two biggest box office attractions on the history of wrestling, and WCW's booking under Bischoff and Nash getting worse and stale.
Cornette didn't oppose The Rock and Stone Cold when he was there, he opposed shit like Beaver Cleavage, Mark Mero's booking and smoothbrain ideas like the Brawl for All that Russo himself takes credit for. Were those the things that brought peak ratings to RAW?
The WWF during the time Cornette was in the creative team wasn't doing much of anything differently from what they were doing before he got there. It was the same 80s cartoon style shit that Vince McMahon liked. The WWF did poorly in 96 and 97 because WCW was white hot, not because their booking got worse.
It's no coincidence that once the NWO started to get stale, suddenly RAW started getting more competitive in the ratings war.
Oh yeah, Russo did hotshot a lot during his TNA and WCW runs and got people to tune in once in a while in order to see the constant car crashses. But this type of booking "success" never lasts more than a few years. It's a freakshow, once you see the five legged horse and the woman with three tits once, you don't come back. Big ratings for a short while doesn't mean big business. Again, it's no coincidence that Russo had the keys to the kingdom when WCW was sold to Vince McMahon by pennies on the dollar.
Early 2000s WWE was very similar to the old Attitude era Russo crash TV booking style, and yet the ratings weren't nearly the same as they were during the Attitude era because everyone had already seen that Russo style wrestling. And you don't go back to the freakshow once you've already seen all the attractions.

@@theazureknight9399 Sounds like a lot of Cornette apologist hot air to me but whatever. Where Cornette failed it wasn't his fault but where Russo succeeded he failed and it was actually to someone else's credit? Horrible narrative there.
Russo didn't have the keys to a billionaire's coffers, he just wrote the shows and produced the talent (who speak very highly of him by the way for the most part). Bischoff on the other hand did have those keys, which is where the ATM Eric and Easy E nicknames came from.
Early 2000's WWE was not similar to the old crash TV booking style. That shows you don't really know what crash TV is. Crash TV was not just shock value, it was one segment crashing into the next. It was leaving hooks at every commercial break to make sure the audience came back and not having commercial breaks during matches. It was ending each show on a cliffhanger that made the audience want to see the resolution next week.
What brought peak ratings to RAW was the way Russo and Ferrarra structured the shows. They would have 2 stories at least, sometimes 3, threaded throughout the 2 hours and you would get multiple segments backstage, away from the arena, or in the ring telling that story. Think McMahon and the stooges looking for Austin in Texas, or Mark Henry taking Chyna on a date. There was something for absolutely everyone. Russo was behind gimmicks such as The Brood (confirmed by Gangrel) and took advantage of a month he had full creative control to squeeze that gimmick in. McMahon didn't want any of that.
For the record, Russo has stated he actually took from the nWo and WCW, not ECW. Just because a guy drinks a beer on TV doesn't mean he stole from ECW. Wrestlers were all drinking beer backstage and Russo was about airing reality on his shows.

Hes such a boring individual is cornette imagine him running a wrestling company would be like going back to the 60s!

Russo is so full of shit in his interviews when asked about Corny. Yeah, Vince, i am sure you went with Jim's ideas "9 times out of 10", thats why the shows never looked remotely like something Jim would have put on camera.
