I don’t think Jesus was afraid of the physical pain when he prayed for the cup to pass from him .... he knew what was coming and always knew .. nothing on earth could shake him from God’s will... He came to do it. I think he didn’t want God to turn his back on him when enduring our sin on the cross which was necessary according to God’s will as stated in Isaiah when It says that it pleased God to crush him for our sins in order to restore peace between humanity and God ....For a moment, Jesus would be absent of God’s love... the cross is the only time God turned his back on Jesus and separated himself from Jesus and withdrew the amazing love he felt from our father..... God sacrificed him. Not the Roman guards. They were acting on God’s behalf. Jesus wasn’t afraid of the Romans or anything else...I think Jesus was afraid of the impending absence of his fathers love while on the cross..... separation from God.... not the physical death .... it’s the only time they had been separated since before the beginning of time ..... I can’t imagine being separated from Jesus’ love. Many saints gladly and happily died and were tortured for Jesus, singing praises on the way to being burned alive ...it’s God’s love that Jesus was afraid of being without..... in my opinion.... but I could be wrong, he could have been afraid of the horrible death... but I don’t think he was.

Bonnie Sue John baptized with water but Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit. It was God the Holy Spirit working in Jesus to fulfill all things. This is why Jesus was baptized, to fulfill all things, even though He had no sins. You see, if you're going to ask people to do things then you yourself must do them also. Our baptism is one of the first acts of obedience that we do in order to fulfill all things. Baptism is a believer's baptism where the person understands and knows that they are going under the water and being cleansed from their sins and crucified with Christ. We are then raised out of the water in a newness of life showing public demonstration that we are now no longer belonging to ourselves, but have submitted to Christ. This is not the justification process. It is God who regenerates a heart and gives life to a person's spirit which then causes a person to act in faith. Our Act of obedience is part of the sanctification process. Baptism therefore is one of the first acts of obedience. It was God the Father who bore Witness and sent God the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove to show His approval and that in Jesus He was well pleased. So then in Jesus' baptism it was a combination of the trinity being God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit bearing Witness.

As I said, just a word of caution because the direction of your implications is towards a touch of sensationalism... But these things are always touchy. I'm a full-on capitalist Republican conservative, but there are certain voices on our side that traffic more in condescension than in the hope of the conservative message. Cup Of Covenant Salvation
I should add that “the cup” is also used as a symbol for experiencing God’s salvation (Psalm 116:13; and then in the New Testament in reference to the cup as part of the Last Supper and Communion).
Jesus endured the wrath of God (drank the cup of God’s wrath) so that our sins could be forgiven and so that we may drink of the cup of salvation -- symbolized when we take the cup at communion).
In Mark 14:39 and also John 18:10 drinking the cup is still viewed as future, and yet Jesus says this after Gethsemane.
Further, Jesus says that the cup symbolized the “New Covenant in My blood” (Luke 22:20). For me, that settles it.
Our Lord drank the cup of God’s wrath when He shed His blood, the blood of the New Covenant, on the cross of Calvary.
He dreaded doing so at Gethsemane, but He experienced God’s wrath and separation (Matthew 27:46) on the cross.
There is a sense in which our Lord suffered throughout His earthly life, living in a sinful world, with sinful people (Matthew 17:17; Hebrews 5:7-8), but that is another story.
I would add in conclusion that a study of “the cup” in the entire Bible may enrich our experience when we partake of communion.

Bonnie Sue John baptized with water but Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit. It was God the Holy Spirit working in Jesus to fulfill all things. This is why Jesus was baptized, to fulfill all things, even though He had no sins. You see, if you're going to ask people to do things then you yourself must do them also. Our baptism is one of the first acts of obedience that we do in order to fulfill all things. Baptism is a believer's baptism where the person understands and knows that they are going under the water and being cleansed from their sins and crucified with Christ. We are then raised out of the water in a newness of life showing public demonstration that we are now no longer belonging to ourselves, but have submitted to Christ. This is not the justification process. It is God who regenerates a heart and gives life to a person's spirit which then causes a person to act in faith. Our Act of obedience is part of the sanctification process. Baptism therefore is one of the first acts of obedience. It was God the Father who bore Witness and sent God the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove to show His approval and that in Jesus He was well pleased. So then in Jesus' baptism it was a combination of the trinity being God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit bearing Witness.

How does a person, who calls them self a christian, support black lives matter, which was founded by communists? Communism and Christianity and Islam cannot exist together in peace. Jim Jones used scripture verses to pretend to be christian and then twisted those verses to fit his own narrative of social justice, just like John Piper does. 1 Cor 5:11 "But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral, covetous, idolator, reviler, drunkard, or a swindler---not even to eat with such a one." With best intentions, be careful Jeffrey. You're obviously misunderstanding some context and then to go on and publicly slander... especially someone that God has raised to this level, is scripturally dangerous to you - in the extreme. Piper has no endorsement of ill-willed demonstration of abuses of rights. For the most part, he intentionally stays out of political issues, so your credibility is suspect. Granted, he doesn't land with what could be called the sharp right, but even I as a political junkie, I have come to pretty much distance myself from it because of the cynicism that it brings around the environment and climate. The the Christian ranks of the Republican party are actually overzealous in their exuberance for currently held positions, and when you have large-congregation leaders and institutions approaching sycophantic displays of endearment, it displays a wavering in moral rigor that is a confirmation of disingenuousness that the liberals whail away at anyway.
Piper does stay more into the humanitarian interests of politics, which a pastor should.
As I said, just a word of caution because the direction of your implications is towards a touch of sensationalism... But these things are always touchy.
I'm a full-on capitalist Republican conservative, but there are certain voices on our side that traffic more in condescension than in the hope of the conservative message.
The state of future American politics does not seem inspiring... But I know liberals can never be pleased. But you're missing the heart of what this message and indeed Piper lives by... We all need to do as the Bible says and make our calling and election sure.
