Most important lesson: Don’t stop. Sounds obvious, but don’t stop if the ribs break, don’t stop when someone’s saying you’re going to kill them, don’t stop when they seem dead already, just keep going until ems gets there. They may very well be dead, but you gave them the best chance. They may have every rib in their chest broken, but they just might be alive as well.
Damn I can't see why people dislike a very informative video like this, would be a shame if they got a similar situation like this and no one would know what to do :)
I dont like that they didnt explain why we should administer breaths and if pushing on the chest is suppose to help them breath or something ?because I'm still wondering, the video was like 50% informative lol

Too bad that'll affect BS videos who will no longer allow people to express their distrust neither.
Almost four years ago, I performed CPR untrained on my mother, who'd passed out right in front of me. After about a minute,, she woke up, sat bolt upright, grabbed my shirt, looked me dead in the eyes, and asked me to help her before passing out a second time. I did CPR for another 5 minutes before help arrived. Sadly, about 2 hours later, the ER doctors declared my mother deceased. Her heart just basically gave out because it was so weak from years of suffering from type 1 diabetes, several massive heart attacks, extreme congestive heart failure, a double bypass when I was 10, a couple blocked veins they couldn't repair, and failing valves. They did everything they could...her heart just didn't have the strength to restart. I'm an asthmatic, and have epilepsy, and nearly gave myself both a seizure and an asthma attack trying to save my mother's life. In that moment, I honestly didn't care what happened to me...I just knew I needed to keep my mom alive. Where they were taking her, I could get help if I needed it, too. My mom's cardiologist called me a "hero." I don't see myself as one. After all, my mother didn't make it. Heroes save people...I failed to save her. OK, yeah, I didn't stop trying, and that in and of itself may be considered "heroic," but I still failed to save her.
Wow that's pretty deep. Sorry for your loss but don't blame yourself. I know its easier said than done but you really did everything humanly possible. I hope you make peace with yourself and look back at this with no guilt in the future, but with pride that you did all you could. You didn't fail in your actions but as you said her heart was weak and unfortunately it was her time to go... Im sure she is proud of you, for all you did for her.
i’m so sorry for your loss. you’re amazing for doing what you could, despite what could happen to you. i hope you’re doing okay. i’m sending you sm love and hugs. stay safe stranger i love you
I wish I could say something that could take away the pain you’re probably feeling, I wish I knew what to say to help ease the loss, but I’m going to try. It hurts, it’s going to keep hurting, I’m not gonna sugar coat it and say the pain goes away, you just learn how to shoulder it a bit better. I lost my parents as well, and even fourteen years later, I still miss them, I still think was there anything I could have done differently? You can’t do that though because it’s just a vicious cycle of self blame and self loathing But know your mother doesn’t think you failed, she knows you did everything humanly possible to save her, the EMTs did everything humanly possible to save her, and the doctors did everything humanly possible. Like you said, her heart just didn’t have the strength, it had nothing to do with you or anybody else, it was just…a bad heart that couldn’t keep going. Her heart maybe couldn’t keep pumping, but it will forever keep loving you.
Ive worked in an ICU as an RN. Ive done compressions on so many people. Ive cracked so many ribs. One time on a 90 something year old the ribs peirced through the skin. I remember feeling the persons heart compress and fill up with blood in the palm of my hands when doing cpr.
@Muhammad Hussam it really depends on your paramedic or person in charge to call it. I’ve done CPR for 45 minutes on one patient but that’s because the doctor told the medic we need to continue but she was asystole.
This is a the best tutorial i've ever seen, and will probably save more lives than what I was taught in the early nineties i.e. pausing to deliver a breath far too often and not pushing hard enough.
You have 30+ years of training and never heard about doing compressions to squeeze the heart? 😂😂. No amount of training will fix a commonsense issue i guess.
@@JesusTorres-zu8wz most training classes don’t show you exactly what’s going on during the process. I took my first CPR class back in high school and it wasn’t explained like this. The only reason I know it is because I told my doctor about having to take it to graduate. I asked him, being medical professional, what the best technique is for to tell if you’re pumping enough. Then he explained to me how it all works.
Technically the heart still beats....but the rhythm is so bad (just like bad compressions from CPR. Too fast, not strong enough, etc. ) that the body starts dying, and let me tell you, some parts (the brain- yes, but also the delicate heart muscles too) can die off or get damaged very fast. The shock is supposed to STOP the heart. That might allow it to naturally 'jump into' its normal, so-called 'sinus' rhythm.
Actually you're correct. Due to lack of oxygen the heart muscles stops pumping. This is when you no longer feel any pulse or hear a heart beat or see a flat line in the heart monitor. CPR is done afterwards so that blood will again flow to those parts of the body that needs oxygen especially the heart. Doing CPR helps bring back oxygen to the heart causing it to start pumping again. Using shock pads or defibrillators helps only if there is an irregular heart beat that can cause the heart to not pump properly which if not corrected will cause it to stop pumping. It's like resetting the heart. In other words unlike in the movies, defibrillation(shock pads) is only used if there is still a heart beat on the patient not without or flat liners.
It should be a mandatory course at school along with other emergency aid techniques, and survival skills like swimming, and dealing with fire hazards, etc.
This stuff freaks me out. But I clicked on this because someone might need me to do this for them some day. And if I don't know this, that person may pass away. Hopefully no one ever needs this. There was a guy that carried a device that removes objects from someone's throat when they're choking. He had the device in his car for 5 years and never used it. And one day, he was in a restaurant when a baby started to choke. He ran to his car for the device, used it on the baby, and saved his life. It takes just one occasion, and you will make a massive difference.
Also don't stop when an AED arrives. Keep compressing while the pads are applied around you. Don't stop until the AED announces that it is Analyzing the patient, then either immediately after the shock, or immediately after it advises No Shock, resume CPR with as minimal delay as possible. Keep going until the patient either wakes up (rare), or professional medical help arrives.
@@jungkookthegoldenmaknae1237 Actually per the American Heart Association, if you are by yourself and can't send someone else to go get an AED, yes you do leave the victim to retrieve the AED (as well as calling 911) before starting CPR.
@@jdjdjdjdjd7778 If you're by yourself with no one around to shout at for help, then yes you have to leave the victim to get a phone to call 911 and grab an AED ID one is available, before starting CPR
I've been through CPR and Advanced CPR several times and EMT school. This is far better than any of the American Hart Association's big budget cheesy demonstration videos used in certification. 2:50 is very important: broken ribs are common and a sign of effective CPR. Ribs can heal, but a brain without oxygen for even a few minutes won't recover.
It's honestly nice to know that broken ribs are normal when doing cpr. When my health teacher was teaching us cpr, he said that you should push hard, but not hard enough to break the ribs otherwise you would be doing it wrong. I was so confused back then because he said to push 1-2 inches and I knew that if you push that deep at a rate of 120 compressions a minute, you'd probably break a rib.
@@johnpaulbarrientos3006 I'm a marine engineer working onboard and in our training in academy, first thing teacher said about CPR is if you're doing it right you'll also break the ribs and that's normal.
I’ve been on many full arrests and have yet to feel ribs “breaking”. I’ve never even felt popping or cracking. The ribs don’t actually break in majority of cases according to the Red Cross and AHA
I had a cardiac arrest at work in March of this year. Fortunately my co-worker was a CPR instructor. She started CPR within minutes of my collapse. I received 3 shocks from the the AED before the paramedics arrived. They continued CPR all the way to the hospital. If it wasn't for her training and skills I would not be writing this.

If you're ever done CPR, you'd know it's very tiring after a few cycles. When administrating CPR ensure you go deep enough and to the beat of stayin alive (2 pumps per second). If you're starting to struggle to keep up the depth or rate of your compressions then ask someone else to take over for you, but ask if they know how to administer first aid too. Here in Australia we get certificates that display we have undergone a first aid course and know how to execute DRS ABCD + other first aid techniques effectively. Also a side note, you may break ribs in CPR; it's normal and you have to keep going if it does happen. Another side note: AED stands for automatic electronic defibrillator. An AED runs the defib shocks automatically; *after you set it up correctly*

This is so helpful and informative! I took CPR training years ago, but this explains to me so much better why it needs to be done properly. Since my class, some things have changed for what they recommend. More recently, I heard that if you sing the song Stayin' Alive by Bee Gees you get the right beat for compressions (darkly, Another One Bites the Dust by Queen has the same tempo). I tried singing it to myself watching their compression rate for proper blood flow to the brain and it seems like that may work. So just FYI to anyone needing a gauge for tempo. Sing it to yourself watching their compressions for proper CPR and see if it would work for you.
It's videos like this that prepared me for the day I never thought would happen. My older neighbor fell down in his yard in full cardiac arrest and I had to perform cpr on him. Thanks to videos like this, he regained consciousness and survived the 15 minutes it too for the ambulance to arrive!

It would be a great tip to sing the Bee-Gees' song "Staying Alive" whilst performing CPR. The song has the exact Beats Per Minute as with the suggested rhythm of CPR.
I have to agree with several people here. This is a very interesting, informative video. It should be shown in Health class, CPR classes and elsewhere. Thank you for making this video.
I love that she said ribs breaking is okay because that has always been my fear lol. I'm a trained lifeguard and windsurfing instructor who was trained with CPR on babies, pets and adults. Getting all my certifications in the hospitality industry got me Heimlich trained on all three too. And I'm still scared of doing it! Lol like if someone needed help, I'd get up, but if someone else rushed in, I wouldn't stop them, you know? I've never done it for real. I saved a toddler from drowning in a pool (don't let your kids near the water if you're not watching!!) at a birthday party one time but I got her to cough the water out. I guess my point is that it's okay to be afraid. If you learn the training will take over. At least that's what I'm told lol. My lifeguarding definitely did!

One tiny bit that is very important near the end that's almost implied: DON'T STOP CPR WHEN THE AED IS PRESENT EITHER! Continue cpr while the AED is being attached, and then follow instructions
They didn’t show the breaking of the sternum or ribs. It is really a nasty experience braking those and then feeling the heart in your hand. This is never as easy as they make it look
How will the heart end up in your hand, come on. I have done countless CPRs and nobody's heart has ever jumped out of their chest into my hand. Besides, ribs are held in place by many muscles. Just don't worry.
@@AA-bz1pr it is bro. CPR is no joke and it can be very disturbing both during and after. They don’t tell you about having to find the femoral pulse or how to bag and breath for the patient either. Also, if they aren’t shocked out of v-fib within a few minutes, the chances of survival or normal life decreases. I’ve never had ROSC because of where I respond to is all volunteer work and rural so we aren’t able to get there on time.
Соболезную вашей утрате....
You did your best and I imagine she’s so grateful for your efforts.
i’m so sorry for your loss. you’re amazing for doing what you could, despite what could happen to you. i hope you’re doing okay. i’m sending you sm love and hugs. stay safe stranger i love you
I wish I could say something that could take away the pain you’re probably feeling, I wish I knew what to say to help ease the loss, but I’m going to try.
It hurts, it’s going to keep hurting, I’m not gonna sugar coat it and say the pain goes away, you just learn how to shoulder it a bit better. I lost my parents as well, and even fourteen years later, I still miss them, I still think was there anything I could have done differently? You can’t do that though because it’s just a vicious cycle of self blame and self loathing
But know your mother doesn’t think you failed, she knows you did everything humanly possible to save her, the EMTs did everything humanly possible to save her, and the doctors did everything humanly possible. Like you said, her heart just didn’t have the strength, it had nothing to do with you or anybody else, it was just…a bad heart that couldn’t keep going.
Her heart maybe couldn’t keep pumping, but it will forever keep loving you.

Then he explained to me how it all works.
i live in russia, and we practice this thing in school👍
I'm 36 years old, I had no clue that was the purpose of cpr, I thought it was to get the heart pumping again on its own. Great video!
That's what I thought too! Didn't realize the whole responsibility of pumping blood will be on the person performing cpr! Now that's scary 😨
I thought the same.....
That's what the shock pads are for.
This doesn't necessarily save someone's life, but it keeps your chances of coming back way higher.
It should be a mandatory course at school along with other emergency aid techniques, and survival skills like swimming, and dealing with fire hazards, etc.

If you get emergency services on a phone they will talk you through it, they do an excellent job of keeping you calm.
The most important factor in avoiding panic is practice, ideally as realistic as possible.
you can do CPR to the beat of Staying Alive (Oh, you can tell by the way I use my walk, I'm a woman's man, no time to talk)
Any CPR is better than no CPR
Even though you are scared do it anyway. Better to do it and maybe get it wrong or maybe get it right than just watching him die
This should be a part of every CPR training class!

I mean ribs do heal after some time a dead brain doesn't
@@commentbabaji1732 well thats true....
after alive
I just hope I don't hear ribs break like the sound of breaking chicken bone in half.
Very well explained and the animation team has done an excellent job
"If ribs break, that's okay" I will never forget this information.
this and the heimlich maneuver should be taught to everyone in school.
The Heimlich manoeuvre has been removed from firstaid training many years ago. Please do not use this technique. Perhaps you should update your own first aid skills
@@nicbrown7751 where do you live? I’m in med school and I literally learned the Heimlich maneuver in first aid class😄 Then how would you get for example a piece of food out of the oesophagus while the other person is choking and can’t get it out by coughing?
I was taught the heimlich in school.
Swimming and treading water too
@@annaszente825 I don’t know where you live, however this outdated technique is no longer taught in many countries around this world. Easy way to rupture a diaphragm. The replacement technique for choking is 5 firm blows between shoulder blades and 5 firm blows on sternum. Quick google check would confirm this information.Repeat process.
If you have someone who is obese, how do you get your arms around them to perform the heimlick? What about heavily pregnant women and neonates? The first aid training in my country and many countries around the world does not train the heimlich, it has been removed from the actual training.

-The cooler Daniel
Side note: Notice how schools don't teach you basic stuff as an adult, like getting a money check, taxes, quick medical aid, how to handle yourself in a stressful situation. You eventually learn that the hard way as a adult. So fucking sad.
Maybe schools where you are. I wonder if schools in othercountries do better.
@@chiaraippoliti Malaysian here, it isnt compulsory due to it being limited to cocuricullar activities so kinda loses its point if its not forced upon every student
Same over here. Easy graduate from school without being a socially functional citizen
All they teach is "Mytochondria is the power house of nucleus"
@@itspradeepbtw Something’s wrong, I can feel it
This is so helpful and informative!
My Nan had a heart attack, my grandad saved her life by performing CPR until an ambulance arrived, god bless anyone who’s had to suffer a family member dying of cardiac arrest or a heart attack.
"If a rib breaks, that's okay 👍"
Really?😐
yes

@@anshjagtap623 yup
@@anshjagtap623 in order to push down deep enough for the compressions to be effective, it's inevitable that a rib will break.
This is the best explanation that I ever seen of how to do CPR. SHOULD BE showed in schools, work places, universities, EVERYWHERE!.
OMG BIG THANKS TO UA-cam THEY PUTTED THIS ON MY RECOMMENDATIONS AND NOW I THINK I KNOW HOW TO SAVE A LIFE
It would be a great tip to sing the Bee-Gees' song "Staying Alive" whilst performing CPR. The song has the exact Beats Per Minute as with the suggested rhythm of CPR.
oh my god he's right
Excellent video. This should be shown on a loop on display screens in public places and schools.
Thank you for that visual explanation of how the blood circulates to the brain the commentator and the visuals very good thank you five stars.
This Channel must be one of the famous channels on UA-cam.
Because, life is at the top of all and everything!
CPR ALTERNATE FACTS:
You will keep compressing until your ancestor's spirit whisper for you to stop.
Nailed it
Uhh why am I getting a reference of something?
The best life saving video that explains every detail so that you are able to really save a life. ❤️
Video: If ribs break, that's okay
Me: O.O
Ribs can be repaired, unlike the brain.
And what if they break and a bone fragment punctures the heart?
@@joelvalenzuela6031 are you compressing woth iron rod or something 😹
@@joelvalenzuela6031 do you have other option then trying this?
Also sternum.
Superb animation, important to know the correct technique.
I teach CPR and have used a couple different programs that use similar animations but this is the best one I’ve seen so far!
My CPR teacher told me to pump to the beat of the song “Staying Alive” by The Bee Gees. Stuck with me all these years.
As a person with a circulatory system, this is accurate
That one line.... No problem even if ribs break.... Literally cleared confusion of how hard to pump 👍🏻
My dad is quite old, I'm scared that one day he'll get a heart attack unexpectedly. They never taught us about CPR in school so this video is very useful.
I am sorry but
Heart attack can happen at all ages.
My father heart stopped few months ago and i am cpr certified ,did cpr on him for around 50 mins for first time until ambulance came in egypt they are worthless but saldy I couldn’t save him i wish i was never there to witness him dying and fail the cpr ,i cant ever forget this scene everyday when i go to sleep its in my head and i cant continue my life without him
Same happened to me 😭😭 last year in march my father collapsed in front of me and I couldn't even do anything except for Rushing to hospital but I wasn't able to save him 😭😭
it took eighty minutes for paramedics to arrive???
One tiny bit that is very important near the end that's almost implied: DON'T STOP CPR WHEN THE AED IS PRESENT EITHER! Continue cpr while the AED is being attached, and then follow instructions
"If the ribs break, It's okay"
Oh god...
They need to show this in every CPR class.
What a fantastically instructive animation . The typical CPR course does not communicate this effectively
@@nusaibahibraheem8183 so have I. I’m talking about feeling the heart on compression. Especially old people...They break easily
@@ironlion805 Damn, that sounds pretty grim...
@@AA-bz1pr it is bro. CPR is no joke and it can be very disturbing both during and after. They make it all peaceful here, but there is bile, blood, people freaking out/crying and a general atmosphere of tragedy. You get used to it and just stay the course after your 2nd or 3rd one, but you can’t unsee it. To be honest, we often pump on the chest just to give the family assurance we’re doing all we can, but by then, it’s unfortunately a lost cause. This just being real.
But you never know. So I keep showing up just to maybe someday save a life.
I was hoping theyd show something about this too! Especially when done against younger kids, some people doesn't realize that cpr is different on kids since theyre more fragile, and you shouldn't put too much pressure
oh man this brought memories... less than two months ago, my mom passed away for a cardiac arrest while I was out at work, when I came home it was already too late, paramedics couldn't do anything, I was the last one to arrive home that day and I'm the only one who can do CPR... not gonna deny it, I felt quite responsible... if I was home that day maybe she would be still here, but I'll never know.
I’m sorry you lost your mom, just don’t think like that. You didn’t know it was going to happen. Do you or did she have any heart issues in the family? If so you should get your heart checked out just in case👍🏼
I'm sorry that happened to you. Please don't feel responsible, that's unfair on you and you know it. There is no way you could have known. It sucks that things like these can happen out of nowhere to the people we love, but if we had to spend every minute of our lives worrying about this we would have no chance at living our own. You were at work, you were living your life and what happened is no one's fault. You can't be there to protect people at all times. Again, I'm sorry that happened to you and I hope you stop feeling that way about it because you know deep down that there's nothing you could have done.
@@lfmm97 so well said!
CPR is still required once an AED is present, just not whilst analysing and shocking.
This, an AED does not replace CPR, it can shock the heart into a normal rythm if it has fibrillation because of the CPR.
CPR & BLS are two life savers we’ll should learn effectively
