Thank you, Mike. Definitely the D'Angelico , but the Stromberg isn't far behind. Hank Garland played a Stromberg , I don't know the model , on
his recording of Irving Berlin's, "Always." Please give it a listen ! It's here on UA-cam !

I guess it's more of a matter of preference. They both sound beautiful, different.
For myself -I'm leaning towards the D’Angelico. I love their sound and they are just gorgeous instruments...
    Really like this channel. -Subscribed.

I prefer the M400 actually. Looks like I am about the only one though. Perhaps one needs to be in the same room with them both. They are close to each other but I prefer the slightly warmer tones of the 400. YMMV

The D’Angelico has a rich full voice with great bass response. Nothing is restrained - the full embodiment of balance, tone and responsiveness. The Stromberg sounds thinner and more compressed - but still has a a very nice voice. Thanks for sharing. Both great guitars.

I agree. I will do a comping demo next where the Stromberg may be best suited.

to my ears the D'A sounded fuller and louder, more pleasing.

I'm going with the D'Angelico. Bigger, more compelling sound.

Considering what these guitars initially were made for this playing style really doesn't represent their true strengths. When you would pick a fine Fleta, Hauser or Robert Ruck classical guitar with a flatpick and play some cowboy chords on them they wouldn't give up the goods either.... To my ears the modern archtops from builders like Stephen Andersen, Bill Comins, Monteleone et al are instruments that lend themselves much better to a softer touch than these old ladies. A New Yorker with a D'Armond 1100 pickup strung with med. flatwounds + plugged into a Tweed Deluxe played at room volume level is my idea of a "perfect" jazz archtop tone, similar to what Kenny Burrell achieved at times before he permanently switched to his Super-400 CES. For purely acoustic playing I much prefer a fine flattop (without overbearing overtones...) or a classical guitar ..... YMMV - This collection however is most impressive to say the least !

As I mentioned in the video, this first section is to get a sense of open chord tone quality - while you may not find it relevant - others do. The next video will contain some chord melody playing.

The D'Angelico sounds, well, like a D'Angelico. Smooth. Balanced. Not overly loud. Not offensive. I guess the word is, perfect. A sound I personally can listen to every day of the week. The Stromberg is louder, all notes blend together and will cut through the mix. I personally like the D'Angelico better. Its just more comfortable to my ear.
Mike, thank you for doing this. I would NEVER have the fortune available to me to do this sound comparison myself. We are lucky to be able to hear this, just once in life. Thanks. Joe D.
And Thanks Vincent Kowski for forwarding this to me. Thanks bro.

Please make tests with different PICKS, guitar sound is powerful but we can hear the pick noise hiting the strings

both sound sool, i guess it will be easier for me to choose which one is my favourite when you'll do another video with some jazz stuff to ear how they react etc

Inteeesting how similar they are sound wise but I find the Stromberg to be more focused. I also really appreciate the music you played on them allow them notes to ring out so we can hear how they sustain, etc. Beautiful playing!

Both sound great, no doubt about that. The Master 400 seems a bit warmer with more bass response on my initial listen. Anyway, there is no loser there.
