It's great how zoo's are no longer a circus just for the spectators to see the animals but part of a conservation and educational program.

33 years ago I had the pleasure of being in the large arena watching Steve do the Chandler role. Much smaller operation back then of course because nobody overseas had heard of him. Great to see the millions the family earns is put back into buying more land to expand the zoo as well as conservation works.

10:50 I remember when Steve started becoming known not only here in Queensland, but around the world. He was always that same, knock-about bloke from when he was young, up until his tragic encounter with the animals he loved.
Oh, and as for the crowds at The Zoo? We went on a quiet day. The stadium was barely half full. It was also when the tiger exhibit was undergoing refurbishing. I enjoyed the trained Macaws and other birds. That was cool. Oh, and the Irwins weren't there, other than mumma, so that may have something to do with it.

African elephants are larger than Asian elephants, so if you think those ones were big, you should see the ones from Africa!
When I was a kid, Taronga Zoo in Sydney had elephant rides just for younger kids. They had two bench seats draped over the African elephant’s back, and the elephant trainer would sit at the front and guide the elephant safely around the special track.

African elephants have never been used as beasts of burden in Africa. So it is a very weird thing for Taronga to have done. Are you sure it an African elephant and not an Indian the largest of the Asian elephants, and it's seemed huge to little you?

From 1989 to 1993.. probably visited the croc farm a dozen times. I went to the same high school as Steve and live in Eudlo, 3 suburbs away from him. He used to take about 20 or 30 people on a personal tour of his property for an hour or two. On Monday September 4 of 2006 at about 1:30pm I got a text that gutted me. I was teaching my class of 7 year olds and it was a sad day. I haven't been to Australia Zoo since. It's always the croc farm to me.

Thank you Rob and Charlie for doing this Zoo and paying so much attention to Steve's legacy. Your video here really shows just how good Aust. Zoo really is and how special it is with the lengths they go to to protect, cure and treat injured wildlife, and help promote the growth in numbers of various species which are normally threatened with extinction by various elements, either by mankind hunting them, or perhaps by reduction in habitats, etc. It was a really good video with plenty of time spent on various exhibits. So thanks again for showing this zoo off to all, and for all the useful tips in how to best spend a day there - including the cost of food which I thought was amazing (SO expensive!!!). Thanks Charlie for mentioning that. I know now to eat before hand. I'll catch up with you guys again soon. GB

12:25 That one clip always puts a tear in my eye. We should all be striving and protesting to save our animals. Without them, we won't survive. No snakes? Rodent plagues. No bees? No food. No birds? No transfer of seeds. No crocodiles or eagles? Rotting carrion everywhere, breeding disease-carrying flies.

The great thing about Australia Zoo is that, while most other zoos around the world are for the purpose of making money for rich people (what place isn't designed for that particular purpose these days??), the money you spend at Australia zoo goes into conservation - buying up vast lands for the purpose of conservation. It might be nice to know that you're exorbitant hamburger prices went towards conservation.

There used to be several small theme parks in that area: Irwin's Reptile Park, The Tram Stop, uh a bee thing, I don't actually remember the others. Most were free entry, or very cheap at most.
Then Steve Irwin got famous, and the little wildlife park expanded and bought out all the other parks to use the land. It's a shame all the history and fun things that were lost.
At least the wildlife hospital still does good work there.

Nice tribute to Steve Irwin 🙏 He was an incredible guy. Same for me, the American talk shows. You would have these Americans with their accents & then the stark contrast of Steve speaking in his broad aussie accent. I will never forget that awful day though - when I thought to myself, this can't be true 😥Truly a freak accident. I had to laugh when the Bin Chicken was there. I saw a few yesterday. I haven't been to Australia Zoo, just Sydney Taronga Zoo & The Australian Reptile Park at Gosford, 1.5 hrs from Sydney. It's where they milk the snakes & spiders for anti-venom, which is a crucial service that they perform there; it's also a great place to visit & a nice drive from Sydney to the Central Coast. Great video!

15:45 Sorry about the comment flood. I lived in Far North Queensland for quite some time, close to the Bloomfield River where there is a population of at least five crocodiles longer than 2 metres.
I once drove past one of the boat ramps that has more than one sign warning of crocodiles and saw 2 German tourists swimming at the ramp. Two days before, I'd seen a 3-metre crocodile hanging around just off the ramp. I pulled in and warned them but they really didn't comprehend how dangerous a situation they were in. You just won't see a croc before it ambushes you. The water isn't crystal clear like it is at The Zoo. Crocs are bloody invisible in a river.

When I visited Austra;ia Zoo for the first time about three years ago, it was all new to me. When I saw Bindi's Island I thought, "How cool was your dad to build you a giant cubby house on an island on the property?" I had no idea that it was once a TV show set.

No its not the best at all. Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney is far better with much more consideration for the animals and enclosures. Australia zoo has a high turnover of staff and constantly advertise for new employees. They also do not support local businesses, sourcing from China instead. Australian - No, are American. Royalty - No.

GB
