  • The Gateway Arch is a monumental feat of architecture and a symbol of America’s pioneering spirit. Standing at 630 feet tall, it is the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere and Missouri’s tallest accessible structure1. Designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, the stainless steel structure elegantly curves against the St. Louis skyline, representing a door to the western United States2.
The Arch commemorates the nation’s westward expansion, marking the city’s role as the “Gateway to the West” during the 19th century. It honors the Louisiana Purchase and the explorers of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who ventured into the unknown lands west of the Mississippi River2.
Visitors can experience a unique four-minute tram ride to the observation area at the top, where they are greeted with expansive views of St. Louis and the Mississippi River through sixteen windows facing east and west2. At its base, the Museum of Westward Expansion provides a glimpse into the life of the 1800s and the construction of this iconic monument2. The Gateway Arch is not just a structure but a beacon of history and innovation, inviting all to discover the rich tapestry of America’s growth.

I think it is worth a trip if you have the time to stop off and see it.

I took the ride in 87' or 88'. Much cleaner now than I remember. It was a memorable ride, but poorly lit on the way up and the "cars" were more akin to a dirty industrial service elevator/capsule. Nice to see the improvements.

It was clean and the ride was good going up. They did a good job on the welcome center and museum at the base as well.

In late 80s as 8 year we want on it. About half it stop working. We had to get out and walk the rest of the way to top and back down.

My wife did the elevator once and refuses to do it again. She calls it a laundry machine lol.

It is very unique win that ride up as it changes directions a few times. Plus the capsule is very small for those four minutes.
