Andrew Robinson With sufficient engineering, I can’t see why an all in one box - black or otherwise - couldn’t be “audiophile” grade ( a term I’ve long found troublesome for the elitist connotation). This video popped up in my suggestions and piqued my interest enough to dive a bit deeper into the Naim website, and I’m curious as to how you connected your turntables? Granted, I didn’t look at their own specs to see if they incorporate their own pre-amp/RIAA EQ stages and or DACs - a feature now not uncommon.
I connected the record player which has a built in phono preamp to the Atom's analog audio input. If your turntable doesn't have a built in phono preamp, you would need to use one with the Atom.
Andrew Robinson Kinda thought that’d be the case. It’s been over 20 years since I bought my current Rega 3, and to be honest, at least 5years since I listened to it - so there go my Audiophile credentials out the window😉 I’m guessing that as a currently active reviewer and recovering audioholic you probably get to see a lot more vinyl spinners with built in phono stages. The Atom does look like quite a nicely though out product, thanks for the review - and your continued refreshing candour.
What the heck is "Audiophile Grade" anyway. I am confident that an all in one product can be rewarding and enjoyable but, probably not for me. I will explain. I love vintage and tubes. That's all. Just my thing. Nothing wrong with all the other stuff and I am in no position to judge anybody's choices. I am eccentric and I have learned to embrace it. My own private Idaho.
I have completely transitioned from big, powerful, audiophile level products, to a more streamlined and flexible setup. B&W Formation Duos as my speaker setup, a BlueSound Node 2i as my central "server/streamer". The Node 2i decodes MQA and sounds superb via the Formation Duos. My entire CD collection is ripped in .FLAC format, and is plugged into the Node 2i via a 512GB SSD drive. My TV is connected via the Node 2i's optical input. My PC and my Cloud Drive, as well as my Wife's music collection on her Mac, is accessible via the Node 2i's network share capabilities. Sounds as good as, if not a tad better than anything I have ever owned in the past, which includes various high-end brands.
In the UK at the back end of 2017 I attended a Naim launch evening where the company introduced the Atom, Star and Nova. They used a pair of Spendor Floor Standers as I remember, maybe A4's. The first half of event was spent listening to a nice but predictable range of sample recordings being both streamed and accessed off the seperate Uniti core hard drive. It was as Andrew described across the board brilliant but it was the second part of the demo that was really interesting. While we chomped through a tasty buffet the Naim guys along with a BBC recording specialist set up a chair and a couple of Microphones ready for a really talented local young singer who's name escapes me at this time but I will add it when I remember. Anyhow she performed a gorgeous short accoustic set of 3 original songs accompanied by her own lovely guitar playing. The guys digitally recorded her beautiful performance. When she had recieved the richly deserved applause from the audience of about 25 people, the room settled and they played back the recording streamed to the Uniti Atom. The result was a stunning lifelike rendition of what our ears had already enjoyed live. It was to all purpose so close to her living breathing performance that you could if you closed your eyes almost convince yourself she was sitting there in front of us, it was that visceral and believable. Incidentally the big brother to the Atom, the Uniti Nova, is as convincing an argument for a high end one box music system as you can ever want. Expensive yes but if you offset all the money you save on expensive seperate Amps, Dacs, Streamer etc. You could buy a pair of High End reference Speakers and headphones and never look back, it really is that good. So not surprised but happy that Andrew and Kristy loved the Atom too. Sorry for the long winded story btw. 🤭
This was my first ever NAIM purchase, I’ve owned mine for almost 3 years now. At 54 years old this is the single best material thing I own or have ever owned in my life. Full stop.
*TO ALL VIEWERS:* I am well aware that in this review I say "Naim Uniti Atom" a lot. I get it. You do not need to tell me in the comments. But, it should be noted that I do not script these reviews, but rather work off of bullet points so as to keep them more "organic". In the moment I'm not always (fully) aware of how many times I say a product's name. I assure you if I say the name a lot, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with a review being sponsored or whatnot, it's just me trying to get my thoughts out. Speaking of sponsored messages, WE ALWAYS DISCLOSE when a video is sponsored. ALWAYS. FULL STOP. There is ZERO ambiguity when it comes to when we received any sort of promotional consideration for we always disclose it by saying, "this video is sponsored by..." If you do not hear and/or see this disclaimer a video on this channel is NOT SPONSORED. I have ZERO issues with doing sponsored videos as it is one of the ways this channel (and my family) earn money, but I ALWAYS DISCLOSE it. Additionally, I have ZERO influence on a product's price or pricing at the time of any review. I simply report the figures provided to me or that are publicly available at the time of any given video. All pricing is subject to change without notice. While you may disagree with this product's pricing, that doesn't make it "evil". Companies are free to charge what ever they wish. If people don't buy it, then they'll likely have to rethink their strategy. However if people do buy, then the price is fine (for them). Like I have repeatedly said in other videos, not every product is aimed at every consumer, so know which are for you based on features and budget and which aren't. If this isn't for you, either don't watch or just watch for fun. Lastly, if you cannot conduct yourself in a way that is respectful to others or myself, if you cannot levy your grievances without resulting to personal attacks and/or insults, don't comment. None of this stuff is mission critical in the grand scheme of things. A product existing, or me liking something you don't doesn't mean the sky is going to fall, or that any of this is going to affect you personally. Remember, the only person who has to like the sound of your system is you. Be well, and now on with the show. -Andrew
I don’t think you need to explain. I do think though, that you’re doing an amazing job and I always look forward to your next video. Would love to see you testing and interacting with products and services you’re reviewing. 🙏
As an owner of the Naim Atom for the last 8 months I can say from my experience it was a fantastic buy. I paired the Atom up with Burchart S400 speakers so I was into it about $5000 and I was very worried about such a costly investment. My worries have all been put aside. With Roon and Qobus subscriptions the Atom was the best choice in audio I’ve ever made.
Hi John, I'm glad everything worked out for you. I'm planning to get a pair of Buchardt S400. Does the Unity Atom has enough power to drive the Buchardt S400?
Andrew, thank you so much. Based on your excellent review, I took the plunge and bought a Uniti Atom last week - I got a cracking deal with a 35% discount!. All I can say is wow!. When I set it up, I decided to play a Best of Bowie CD and selected "Changes" as the first test track. My wife was in the kitchen, and within 2 mins she was stood in the room with me with a grin on her face, commenting on how fantastic it sounded - I think her words were "it's so clear and clean sounding". I have to tell you, in 20 years of marriage, she has never once reacted to any new piece of gear I have set up - until now!. We then spent the whole night playing CD's and streams, and the sound just got better and better as it warmed up. It was like re-discovering my music collection all over again. One very happy Atom owner here.
@@jwallaby7895 From a shop in the UK. They were selling a S/H one on e-bay. I went to the shop to collect it and he offered me a brand new sealed one for just a bit more than the S/H one at a whopping 35% discount and 5 yr warranty. I couldn't refuse! Well pleased with it.
I would think people who have $3500 to spend on a streamer would already have an integrated or more likely a separate pre and power amp. Also while it's very nicely designed, since most of the interaction with it happens via your phone anyway, I'd personally rather have it tucked away where it isn't seen making that a moot point. I'm obviously not the target audience as I feel like a $150 Raspberry PI with a decent DAC would be indistinguishable sound and function wise but it does look very nice. The need for a very expensive streamer just escapes me.
Yeah feel like “streaming” means more about the ease, compatibility, cross function of devices. Meaning I can get and see on my phone, Xbox, car, laptop...anywhere. Half of a “streamer” if it’s it’s own box...
My problem with any streaming device at this price is the lifespan. Just like Sonos just did, pretty sure Naim is going to deprecate support in 5-7 years and turn it into a $3,200 paperweight. I'd rather spend $2,000 on an integrated amp and $1,200 for a streamer. When the streamer gets put out to pasture, I'm only out the $1,200.
Agree mate, seriously why do we even need to see our streamers? For under $200 you can get a very good easy to use Raspberry Pi 4 setup as a Roon endpoint with Tidal HiRes leaves you a lot of coin to pair it with a really good external DAC.
Would rather live for the here and now than worrying about some future Audiophile utopia that I will miss ..after all nobody knows when our last " in the moment " will be..
I've had the Atom with Focal 906 speakers for a few week now. It's amazing how simple it works, Tidal and Qobuz built it Spotify connect too. It's also got Chromecast and airplay support too. So it's got all streaming and internet radio at the touch of a button. It's beautiful with a lovely user interface that knob on top screams turn me up. I've also connected up my Rega turntable and that's now sounding better than ever. Overall it's fabulous sounding looking with the best UI on any high-end hi-fi equipment. I'm very tempted next to go for the MuSo Qb2 in our kitchen and take advantage of Naim multiroom. I'd love my record player to become whole house. Thanks again for your review. Cheers. Jon.
I auditioned the NAD M10 and the NAIM Uniti Atom a few months ago. I rarely just sit in the sweet spot between the speakers, i.e. I move around the room a lot. The Naim seemed to have a limited focus sound stage, while the NAD sounded good from lots of different places. Also the NAD has Dirac room correction, and I have an L shaped room shape. I got the NAD and am very pleased with it.
I auditioned by the Unity Atom and the NAD M10. M10 was more detailed, a little forward on the high end, a larger touch screen and blusound that works perfectly. It was also about $500 cheaper. I was concerned about the class D amp, but I have no complaints, 100 watts vs 40 on the Naim.
I actually went into the shop to buy the nad m10. Preferred the naim for build, for the quality of its screen, and found it to have more punch and clarity than the Nad M10. Had it for two weeks and absolutely love it. My only issue with it is the hdmi hardly ever works connected to my LG oled,so I’ve just ran an optical cable instead. The naim is connected to a pair of Kef R5’s and it has zero problem driving them. I’ve had Arcam and Cyrus separates in the past and this has the beat and in one discrete box. As has been stated,it looks like a lifestyle product, but gives absolutely nothing away in terms of sound quality compared to separates
@@robertsmithrs407 thanks for sharing your experience. So basically apart of the HDMI issue you found the NAIM to be "better" in every aspect? Funny enough, here in Germany Naim is even cheaper than NAD. I'm really interested in having that HDMI port, that's why your (and Andrew's) reports made me to think twice. What are the pros of HDMI over Optical? Have you noticed any difference? How about the front USB port, does it read FLACs and WAVEs? Thanks
I own one and agree, it's great. Such a luxury product and a joy to use. I love that it's a roon endpoint. I also just purchased the Mu-so 2 which is also quite an amazing product and a roon endpoint as well.
Naim has a solid tradition and pedigree for producing high quality value for money hi fi. If you can afford it the Uniti Atom is all you need. Pair with a set of Spendor or Harbeth or Focal floorstanding speakers and you are done.
Thanks for the great review Andrew! I swapped in a Unity Atom into our HIFI system (Naim NDX2/NAC282/HICAPDR/NAP300DR, Focal Sopra2, REL S812 Line Array) at ~ $90K, and and it held its own with control, imaging and musicality. It is not for everyone because of the price, but if you are into 2 channel music there is NOTHING made from any manufacturer that comes even close to the performance of the Unity Atom. We also paired it with the Focal 806s and for $5K it is competes with our reference system in listening enjoyment. Keep up the great reviews!
Despite your constant gushing over this unit, I am not convinced the $3300 tag would give me that amount of AQ improvement over what I already have. 2 years ago I got an overall sound (and most certainly bass) improvement when I connected the Line Out of a THX hp dac/amp in front of my Parasound P7/A21 combo. The improvement is so good that the Uniti would have to provide at least 4Xs the improvement to cover that $3300. I wouldn't make that bet.
Great Review! I bought a Unity Nova (the big Brother of the Atom) 4 Years ago; can only recommend it 100%! Playing it with the lovely „Verity Audio Finn“ Speakers its a perfect Match with an amazing Frequency Range and a stunning Base Performance; the App is also brillant as is the Variety of this System. Only Down is lack of Connectivity with Headphone Amplifyer which is mandatory. Naim has done a great Deal with the Atom and the Nova! Strongly recommended.
I'll echo some previous comments. The closest piece to the Naim would be the NAD M10. More power and a touch screen interface......but not a Naim. Love to hear your thoughts.
Hi Andrew. Thanks for reviewing Naim Atom. Had the device myself, right up until I borrowed a NAD M33. After a few days I was sold, and bought my own NAD M33, and my Naim Atom has long since been sold, the same is my Naim amplifier. In exchange, I got 2x200 watts in 8 ohms, BlueSound, 24-bit/192 k-Hz HD, Dirac Live-System, e-Arc, 2 MDC-Slot for HDMI and USB, MQA, better and clearer sound, more open and present sound ... more connections and much- much more. So all in all, the NAD33 is this year's high-end purchase, not the Naim Atom, and my B&W 804 D3 and myTechnics 1210 GAE with Cardenza Black fits the NAD33 perfectly, absolutely perfect. Try it Andrew, you will not be disappointed. Kjeld Krabbe, Copenhagen.
@@kjeldkrabbe7410 Ah... I assume you don't have DSD files ? I am seriously considering Marantz SACD30n for my Amazon Music HD streaming device (HEOS app) / CD / SACD player and it handles DSD 11.2 on USB DAC or DSD5.6 on thumb drive/NAS/Online streaming. Thoughts ?
The reason I chose the PM-12SE over the Marantz SACD30n was the PM-12SE handled "burned" CD´s, CD-R and DVD-R without problems, (I have a lot) and that old bad-sounding CDs from the eighties, are lifted up to a completely different level . All in all, a better machine, just my opinion. I'm pretty sure you will not regret if you choose a 12´r instead.
I'm interested in the M33 but honestly, the comparison here should be with the Naim Uniti Nova and not the Atom. I've compared the Atom with the M10 and for me, it's hands down the Atom. Just a fuller, more engaging listen. I'm hoping to get the Nova and M33 in the house to directly compare.
Love the way you manage to convey how you feel about this unit in a way that connects personally and directly with the viewer. Great review, very enjoyable...and just bought one, so super excited ...
I think that NAD M10 give more for the money (around $2500) More and better quality power (better sound), better design and interface for my teaste, and more options like Room Correction.
This is an amazing product. In my opinion worth every penny. The 40WPC it claims has more drive than 500W Class D amplifiers that I've heard. Naim knows what they are doing. Not a surprise as they've been doing it for the past 40 years. Thanks for the great review, as usual.
Hi Andrew. Another great review, so thank you for listening to thousands of pounds (dollars) worth of stuff so I don’t have to. Recently I’ve thought about adding a dedicated streamer to my system, or changing it entirely for something like this, but I went with a more convoluted home-built thing which to my ears sounds brilliant. Weirdly though, watching you and your channel has made me listen to more music recently than almost anytime since I bought my TV. I’ve only ever had two channels though, and my HiFi has been used for the TV / home theatre sound throughout, but actually listening to music fell by the wayside. Now I’m spinning silver discs again, as well as streaming TiDAL and Spotify. So, many thanks to you for your work. It’s reminded me why I spent lots of money on my system, and got me back into the pass-time of listening to music and enjoying my equipment playing it.
Naim has been around for a long time and is synonymous with high quality, so the price is not surprising to me. I will agree that this can be a product that other companies should emulate. Maybe a piece that does not have a built in amp? Without an amp it could cut the cost down considerably. I know that folks who already have amazing amp/pre-amp set ups would love this type of device as an add on to existing systems without paying for an amp that they would not use. I can tell by looking at this unit, that the quality runs deep. I am sure that there were no short cuts or cost cutting measures in the design and build. I'd love to take it out for a spin. But, the price tag would keep me away. But, I am glad that this is out there. It could hopefully inspire other products like it at price points that more can afford. Time will tell. In my system I do have a media player/streaming service that has the services that I use built in to my A/V receiver. Tidal, for instance, is one that I use above all the others. I'd have to agree with Andrew that the Application that is native for the A/V receiver leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to using the Tidal service. The native app for Tidal is much better when used on my smart phone, tablet or my Windows PC. So, if anything else can "trickle down" to other manufactures is how they can improve the use experience with the application's UI. I can also say that if the product can preform at a level that this unit does, then you should consider this "audiophile" all in one unit over separates if that is something you are willing to do. Just sell your old stuff, hook this up to your favorite speakers and have fun!
Any plans to review the Hegel integrated amplifiers? Definitely not as pretty as the Naim Unity Atom but I've heard great things about the H95 or H120.
Great review Andrew! I personally could not resist to get myself the Unity Nova (big brother of the Atom) and hooked it up with my B&W 805 D3s, a true marriage made in heaven! One aspect that I can add to your review is the awesome earphone amp inside these beauties. Try it and let me know...
I appreciate you keeping things in perspective. Please trust that there is a method to my madness with respect to how and when I unveil products on this channel. We needed to have this discussion/product now, for what comes down the road will likely have greater context and for some, make more sense. If we don't occasionally dip our toes into the high-end market (or in some instances, the absurd) we don't know what bar we're either chasing, trying to match or outright best when we talk about products being a good value or an overachiever. I swear to you, this channel is not losing its way, but rather just broadening its horizons so as to further the conversation. Thanks for watching!
Sounds like a real winner of a product for you 2-channel enthusiasts. Unfortunately, as somebody that really enjoys surround sound, I don't see how I could ever justify the cost of this unit. Sorta wish they would come out with a version minus the amplifier section so that we could enjoy the user interface of the all-in-one streamer. For now, this will have to wait until I win the lottery...
A shame you've overlooked the NAD Masters M10. Easily the most direct competition. Larger screen. Touchscreen. Bluesound interface. MQA decoding. Multi-room capability. Roon endpoint. Proper speaker terminals. Dual sub out. Dirac room correction. More power. Those are just the additional features. What it doesn't have is the larger price tag, unnecessary remote control (one is optional) and large top mounted volume knob (hello touchscreen).
Really wish I could have done a direct comparison however, I'm not sure how I speak to a product I've never used before which is why I do not mention the M10. We're hoping to get the updated version soon.
I've listened to this, I know it'll sound amazing with my Focals in my room and it'll be my next purchase. The reference of Jobs and the comparison to Apple is plain unfortunate, misjudged and off putting. Apple can't hold a candle to Naim. Naim is expensive for a reason. Apple is expensive for no reason.
Yeah, there are more than a few breakdowns with respect to Apple hardware that show that as much as we like to think they're woefully overpriced, they're often more competitively priced when all things are taken into account. But hey, if Apple ain't your bag, that's cool. It doesn't take anything away from the NAIM whatsoever. thanks for watching!
To be honest, this is $330 of electronics marked up 1000 percent. For $3300, think of the hifi hardware you could buy?! But I guess if they sent you a unit to review, you have to be appreciative, and say things like palpable (3 times) and pontificate. That makes me cringe. This is the future of audiophile listening? God help us....
Mike, respectfully, even your $330 electronic whatever is marked up 1,000 percent. What's your point? People and businesses need to make money and make a living. Just because you don't see the value, doesn't mean a value for the right customer isn't there. As for your claim that I have to play nice with those who send me review units, may I refer you to my Polk Audio reviews. They sent two products and both times I wasn't much of a fan. Companies like Naim (and Polk) are real businesses and know that not everyone is going to gush about their wares, and not every person on the market is in the market for what they're selling. I don't know when this notion that if a product doesn't speak to each individual audiophile it must be crap started, but it's getting old. If the Uniti Atom isn't for you, then it isn't for you. No shame in that. But to make a blanket statement like everyone is somehow doomed because you disagree with one review, that's more cringe-worthy. Thanks for watching all the same, and be well!
Andrew Robinson Thanks for your response. All valid points. But may I share a story, inspired by you. It’s about a Pioneer SX-450. Actually, two of them. I watched your video about this unit, bought two of them on eBay for 180 bucks. I built a super unit between the two, hooked it up to my TLC roku 55 inch tv, added a Bluetooth input. It will do everything I need it to do. So thank you, pairing old tech with new sometimes is just better, and waaaaaayyyyy cheaper.
I auditioned the Atom back in early March, fell in love. My dealer then made a mistake with the order, and to compensate gave me a Uniti Star for the same price that had just been returned by someone preferring multichannel after all. Or whatever. I didn't care. To this day I feel extremely lucky, and he's got a customer for life. The level of control it applies to my modest Dynaudio EMIT's is astonishing. I recognize all of the sound signature descriptions in the video, the Star is just a bit more powerful. Andrew discribes it well, it's kind of addictive, you just want to keep listening. The only con for Star (or Nova) for that matter is that it's twice the size and therefore lacks the attractiveness of the smaller Atom (WAF!), edging towards the classic big black slab presence.
Awww. Keep trying in the next one & maybe your luck will strike. I’m not sure when the next giveaway will be but I can tell you the winner entered our last giveaway and didn’t win. But look at his luck this time! 😊
Great review, i been using it since Jan-2021 paired it with Monitor Audio Gold 100 5G. I love the clarity and Dynamic it gives the music while listening. I usually listen at a volume of 40 (on the display readout) and its quite enough, turning it up to 50-55 it gives the feeling of having a pair of headphones on 😁 Was thinking of upgrading to the Naim Unit Nova, but i dont know if i have to unless i move to a bigger appartement. Try listening to "My future or Billie Bossa Nova / Billie Eilish" "The Gold (Acoustic) or I know how to speak / Manchester Orchestra" that will give you some goosebumps hehe
I don't always subscribe to channels without watching the content that UA-camrs deliver... but your channel has been the one to watch and is sad to say that I didn't subscribe sooner because your content is premium and top-notch ... And now that I'm a subscriber I can say is hard to find a channel that is not biased Keep doing what you doing no matter what your information and your you put it is one fo a kind thanks !!!!
I loved this review and I have watched your videos ever since. The humour is fanatstic, bit rates are treated with respect from a safe distance. No surprise you are up to 200,000 viewers . There is no limit and remember, just keep doing what you doing!
I've listened to this combo with the concept 500's and it does sound fantastic...I listened with the uniti star and it sounded even better.... brilliant product, thanks for your brilliant reviews...from the UK 👌
IMO a one box solution can absolutely be an audiophile grade. It been my experience that a lot of the gear that comes from the UK have deceptively low power specs and so seem over priced eg NAIM, QUAD, REGA or LINN . . . I think it may be British understatement. Anyone that listens to these brands or similar may not agree they're good value but will understand why people buy them. I also wondered why you didn't mention NAD M10 which is very similar in size and specs but slightly cheaper. While the NAD doesn't have that lovely NAIM volume control it does have a touchscreen interface and VU meters! and everyone knows that VU meters make equipment sound better ;)
We didn’t mention the NAD because we have no personal experience with it and it would be a guess at best if we had. We’re working on getting their products in house but dealing with stocking delays due to Covid.
Naim has a well earned reputation for building quality high end audio components and you certainly seemed smitten by the "Naim Uniti Atom" integrated Amp DAC/streamer. The price will limit potential buyers to those who have high end separates in their system already and I am not sure that they want to bypass their expensive amps. I do not keep up with the Naim product line but I would be interested in a DAC/Streamer sans the amp. I have the Auralic Altair G1 which may not have the allure of an "Apple-Like" device but it exudes quality and sounds terrific. BTW are you sure you are not a Naim Ambassador......just kidding LOL.
Way too expensive for a mere 40 watt amplifier. User interface may be world class, and the amp may be still be great at 40 watts, but it's still only 40 watts.
I bought the atom after an intensive 2,5 hrs listening session in a local hifi dealership comparing sperate NAD components, Cambridge Audio EVO 150 and the Atom. Guess which one had by far the best sound (as judged by all 4 persons in the room alike)....the ATOM! 40w is just a paper thing, in reality the EVO with 150 Watts sounded boring.
@@martinaston1715 Interesting. Of course sound is highly subjective as is tasting coffee or wine. Even the hifi dealer agreed in saying the Evo was less emotionally sounding than the Atom. The Naim Nova as the higher level product was a wee bit punchier than the Atom but that was just a wee bit and came with a hefty mark-up.
You reviewed the original Atom. You need to try Atom Headphone edition. The reason I recommend it has nothing to do with the headphone. It looses the speaker amp but it has upgraded internals. It sounds so much better as a preamp/streamer/DAC. Not sure there is a better separeate preamp/streamer/DAC each costing under 3k.
I know in a lot of ways it is apples to oranges, but just last week I scored a Marantz SR7011 for $550. I feel like that is a lot more of most everything for far less money. That is just me and my take with my priorities and budget. That in no way invalidates this product. Also usability is a huge deal that can't be overlooked. If it helps you enjoy more music more easily that has a value all its own.
I have owned the Atom. Its a very versatile unit with great app but its not hifi. It sounds flat compared with a Bluesound Node and mid priced DAC for example.
From the same House, BlueSound Powernode 2i(i have the 2), don't have a screen, might not sound as refined, but none the less, a more budget friendly option. Either way, great review... again. :)
Detonate Klubstompers You cannot compare 1:1. These are Naim-watts, backed up be a very good power supply, meaning it will in reality sound louder than 40 watts.
Detonate Klubstompers Well, your choice 😉. But if you would be tempted to find out how good ‘only 40 watts’ can sound, this would be an item to check up on. Its not all about quantity, it is definitely also about quality. Maybe you will not need to turn the volume that much up, when it sounds (way) better?
@@mr.hansen8433 I agree with u it’s about quality. Same is true about engines. Some scoffed at v6 because they just had to have a v8 for power, yet here comes Tesla with a v0 😂 and they smoked the competition so I understand that. But for someone to say “oh this 40 watts sounds better than u think” there’s no way to quantify that. Even if that 40 watts sounded like 80 watts, that’s still a $3000 disappointment.
I think this is a beautiful product. I have previously used a Sonos system in multiple rooms, and I loved the simplicity and how the interaction with the system worked via the app. However, there were always services and functions that were in the back of my mind by way of “I wish it could do this... I wish it could do that...”. That taught me to never again buy into an all in one system that will keep me at the mercy of the manufacturer in terms of functionality, especially in a fast developing environment where new services pop up every day. The amplifier section will probably last a lifetime, and the DAC may serve you a decade or so, but all the rest will be outdated quickly and that would mean throwing the whole thing away. I bet you that Naim will come up with a touchscreen version in a year or two and all you will think of is upgrading...
Just demo’d one and bought on the spot- Have linn and meridian equipment (older) mynrevel m22s have never seemed so alive (not easy to drive). I had a bryston ssb60 integrated that didnt go as deep. Very pleased.
It only reeks of apple if you're an apple fan. Personally, I'm not, so thank the lord Jobs didn't have a say on this... The fact it made in Britain won me over and head to head with Cambridge it took the edge... Apple... Don't be silly.... Ffs
$3300 USD for this! How is this market so fucked? That's a blatant slap in the face. I can build an entire god damn house system for that kind of money.
Great review as always 👏🏽👏🏽, I have owned a number of Naim products over the years and they have all been sensational, OK they aren’t cheap but they actually represent excellent value for money when you take into account what you get for your buck!
overpriced Naim junk. Put it side by side with a Bluesound or Cambridge Audio and it is destroyed. Had it for a month, kept thinking I was missing something, and sold it. If you love streaming, spend the money on the Auralic. One and done.
Auralic is not one and done, as Auralic is not an integrated amplifier the way the Uniti Atom is. The Auralic is a streamer and DAC, and in some instances a preamp, but it is not a one box or all-in-one solution. As for how the Naim compares to Bluesound or Cambridge, to each their own.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Yes, I was referring to the price range involved, you could build a nice streaming system, but I understand the market they are going after and it fills a void.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Yamaha's WXA-50 is amazing for the money. Let's be real: all of these products are for the people that care more about sound quality than what Sonos delivers.
I wouldn't say Naim is a piece of junk, but there are other all in ones that are much cheaper than Naim. The Naim brand is not known for it's value proposition. But for the price, you do get a very good build quality. Having said that, I wouldn't pay the price for this all in one, which will be obsolete in 3 years time due to fast emerging technologies in all in ones. They'll probably add in a DSP module or MCQ support in the near future.
Naim gear is far from junk. Ledgendary gear. I'm not a naim fanboy but when you consider how many boxes this one box replaces it makes the $$:more palatable and even a value in naims lineup. None of their stuff is cheap. Never has been. The auralic gear is not a all in one box solution like this. And I'm sorry this one box is way above the bluesound combo. Wondering if this person has even compared in person this piece. Folks tend to have this reaction to gear they can't afford.
All in one system is great as long as there is option to bypass any of the components. If they simply trap you into their ecosystem like apple, how liberating it is that?
Please don't use Steve Job's name in vain. $3,300 for a 40 wpc integrated without a built-in phono section and OEM support not worthy of the price, you were obviously paid well for the review. I won't buy a 50 year old piece of electronics that contains un-obtainable parts. Sounds like Naim will support this toy for 5 years, if you are lucky. No MQA is the last straw for an AIO.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews That's gotta be infuriating. Not to mention you don't set the price of products and yet you receive all the vitriol when someone doesn't have the pocketbook for it.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews ohh, I hope you have thick skin Andrew, I mean, I dont get this people, youtubers are investing allot of effort and time making this Kind of quality content, and that they brag about It, and even insult the content creator, really a shame
The device looks amazing, certainly I'd buy one, but currently stick with the Shield TV. Reasons? I can 1. reuse my current stereo, 2. choose playing app from thousand of free or payed apps, 3. better manage offline music to play. Thanks for the review.
Everybody is a 2 channel home theater enthusiast. That's the reason sound bars are selling so well. Nobody believes it's better than home theater or even a stereo setup. It is either because people don't want 7 speakers and 2 subs in their small apartments or because they are stuck with buying a receiver to power their stereo speakers anyway. The stereo amps that have basic functionality that receivers have had for years, like HDMI and music streaming/casting etc. cost more than an entire entry level home theater setup. So, the only affordable option is the sound bar. I don't understand why more two channel affordable amps don't have an HDMI.
I have a friend who owns a hifi shop in Newtowards, NI and Naim is one company that he sells a lot of. I've heard a lot of their products an have been quite impressed. I couldn't help but notice in the beginning of the video the Q Acoustics concept 500 speakers there in the background. It's not surprising that the Unity Atom and Focals work well together as they are both owned by the same company. Looking forward to that review Andrew. Great detailed review btw.
Hi Andrew, Thanks for the nicely done review. I own the Uniti Atom since more than a year a go and was excited from the very beginning that such a small box can sound that great. To be honest I’m a huge fan of UK Audio manufacturers (started with Rotel etc,) and went now for the Atom because of the nice look and good sound. Nevertheless I have some complaint which are related to the usability of the user interface. An nice example for a rubbish user interaction (from my point of view) is the following scenario: When you listen to the Web Radio in your favourite list and you change the radio station directly at the atom by pushing the favourite button on the Atom, the symbols appear in large size on the screen of the atom. If you skip the radio station of your favourite list withe the remote control it appears a tiny list on the display of the atom. Even to read the symbols requires to move closer to the atom. So for what do you have a remote control if the symbols are that tiny that they can be read only when you’re next to the device? This might not be a issue for people with eagle eyes and the ones who’re using their smart phone as the main remote control but it’s definitely not thought to the end. Another complaint from my side is the the display brightness in dark rooms. You can choose only 4 different settings (low, normal, bright and completely off. I wish NAIM would update their control panel with a slider so that you can lower the display much more. Especially in a dark environment the display is too bright and you can see that it shines too much. Power off button in the app Really strange I found that to shut down the atom you need to hangle through the app by pushing the small preferences button and there you will find the “power off” button. What’s that? The app could also provide the possibility to readjust your favourite radio stations or to generate own lists. So far I haven’t found out how that works. Anything else? I wished Naim would have left an USB connector on,y on the backside of the Uniti series. Uniti Atom, Star and the Nova look so beautiful and clean designed. An then NAIM puts a ugly USB port into the Acryl front panel. I mean they managed to hide the WiFi Antennas but kept the useless Front USB port that used only once in 18 months? My conclusion: A very well masterpiece of hardware with room for improvement . Especially on the App side when it comes to settings. All the best G.
An update: Seems Someone at Naim was hearing my prayers 😀 The issue I mentioned with the radio station symbols when changing them with the remote control are fixed. If you press now the favourite button of your radio stations the symbols are enlarged and you can see them from larger distances. Hope Naim will implement a finer brightness control of the display so that the atom doesn’t appear in dark ambient shining so bright... Still happy with the Atom...
Andrew has a good ear and way of describing how this sounds. It does not sound hi-fi with high resolution or much air. But its not warm either. It just sounds right, and its hard to put your finger on how. Naim has its own sound that is not neutral, it's for music lovers. You get into the groove and stop analysing things. But I am just repeating Andrew...
The founder of Naim liked to make lower power amps and anyone familiar with the NAIT series of integrated amplifiers can attest to their sound quality. The NAIT 2 in particular is in demand and people spend ridiculous amounts of money for them and even more to improve them. The NAIT 2 has less than twenty watts. I really wish when I got into this hobby back in the late 80's I'd just bought a pair of Epos ES-14's, Rega Planar 3 and a NAIT 2. I'd probably still have them today.
Hi Kris, I'm currently putting together a horn system with Oris 150 horns and single ended triode amps. If I come across a supernait 3 I'll definitely give it a listen. I'm experimenting with a lot of stuff right now, doing a lot of building and DIY. Someday I may want to go back to toe-tapping simplicity and if so, I'll put together the Naim system of my dreams.

It’s been over 20 years since I bought my current Rega 3, and to be honest, at least 5years since I listened to it - so there go my Audiophile credentials out the window😉
I’m guessing that as a currently active reviewer and recovering audioholic you probably get to see a lot more vinyl spinners with built in phono stages.

So glad it has worked out for you!
Hi John, I'm glad everything worked out for you. I'm planning to get a pair of Buchardt S400. Does the Unity Atom has enough power to drive the Buchardt S400?
so I have had the Atom for three years and you have really understood the product it makes me feel all of those emotions every time I listen to it.
Love hearing how much you are both enjoying your new set up!
Where did you purchase your unit atom?
@@jwallaby7895 From a shop in the UK. They were selling a S/H one on e-bay. I went to the shop to collect it and he offered me a brand new sealed one for just a bit more than the S/H one at a whopping 35% discount and 5 yr warranty. I couldn't refuse! Well pleased with it.
I’ve bought it. You are right- difficult to find a competitor in this budget. It’s marvelous!
Audio Advice has got this unit paired with the Focal Chora 806’s for $3,290 right now - making the Focal’s almost free!
When the streamer gets put out to pasture, I'm only out the $1,200.
good point. go with separates always. easy to upgrade/sell/swap/donate etc
Cheers. Jon.
It‘s easy as it is, if you buy a naim, you buy a naim..... but you should compare it with the NAD M10..
Hello Andrew you need to review the NAD M10 I believe you be surprised even more by its performance.
Can a more powerful amp be connected to the atom?
Didn’t care either way about this until I saw that volume knob. That thing is awesome!
Am I only the only one that for the first half of the video thought he was talking about the NAME "Unity Atom" and how good of a name that is 🤦♂️
An absolutely world class product. This review made me listen to it when I had almost decided on a Nad m10. Preferred the naim instantly.
Why did you pick Naim?
Thanks
British know their stuff when it comes to building and designing audio gear. Great review!
Thank you and I tend to agree.
Got me sold Andrew, but at 3.25k??? Thats a new motor for the car I'm building. Ouch!
Mind you, does look great..... ~Peace
Not sure I would make that bet either. Stick with what you love and know works!
It seems like the amplifier aspects are secondary to the streaming functionality. I wouldn’t mind one without the amps and paying $2500
Good review, I would love to see what you think of the Naim Uniti Nova.
The Nova is a BLAST! Love it from the first day.
Nice writeup. I assume the Bluesound you got was the POWERNODE 2i w/ HDMI ? Curious, how do you handle DSD files or SACD's, assuming you have them ?
Thanks PG
There is a built-in Bluesound multiroom music streaming (BluOS).
For CD/SACD´s I use a Marantz SA-12SE
Another example of your brilliance. This is the mold from which all gear reviews should be done. Pro work...pro work.

Wow, thanks!
What was the product called?
He didn't say...
Love the way you manage to convey how you feel about this unit in a way that connects personally and directly with the viewer. Great review, very enjoyable...and just bought one, so super excited ...
I purchased one today and it's magnificent.
I think that NAD M10 give more for the money (around $2500) More and better quality power (better sound), better design and interface for my teaste, and more options like Room Correction.
@Alejandro & @Stuart Shuck - we're working on getting the NAD to test your theory. Stock issue delays. Thanks to you both for watching.
How about the new NAD M33...!
That’s the one we have on order.
Is it the best? Its all in the Naim.
This is an amazing product. In my opinion worth every penny. The 40WPC it claims has more drive than 500W Class D amplifiers that I've heard. Naim knows what they are doing. Not a surprise as they've been doing it for the past 40 years. Thanks for the great review, as usual.
It definitely put at least one big power amp to total shame. Thanks for watching, Joey!
I have never heard anything from NAIM that wasn't expensive and worth every penny.
Me too. I have to hear this with Klipsch Heresy IVs.
Exactly! got the „Nova“, never regretted.
LOVE THAT! Good for you and glad to hear you're getting back into listening to music! Be well!
Just go onto Naim audio line and loving it so far !
Thanks for sharing!
No this is not for me to expensive but i like your channel because there is everything affordable stuff expensive stuff just everything.
Me too, when i heard the price, i was.....nope not for me :(
I appreciate you keeping things in perspective.
Hell a good used preamp, and even a iPad mini in a nice box/case could do the trick for under $500
I watch this channel constantly and i can’t afford 90% of the products featured lol...
No one talks about security on the network with these streamers.
Have to agree. I loved it so much i bought it and i couldnt be happier.
Apple is WAY over hyped and definitely not what it used to be. People still purchase just for the name, sad really.
I just demo’d the Focal Kanta No.3 w the Naim Unity Atom today, and it sounded absolutely amazing (and LOUD)
At least it’s made in England.
Lol, not even close.
@Mike Johnson - that is typical Apple behaviour lol...
Just ordered the Star, I can’t wait to try it.
My heart skipped a beat when the winner was announced lol congrats to my namesake!
Awww. Keep trying in the next one & maybe your luck will strike. I’m not sure when the next giveaway will be but I can tell you the winner entered our last giveaway and didn’t win. But look at his luck this time! 😊
Kristi Wright haha I will! It was just funny since it’s a relatively unusual first name here in the US, so it was quite the double take! 😁
Rafael Maia I bet!! I would’ve reacted the same and then quiet cried in my pillow later thinking about how messed up our world is right now. 😂
Great review, i been using it since Jan-2021 paired it with Monitor Audio Gold 100 5G. I love the clarity and Dynamic it gives the music while listening. I usually listen at a volume of 40 (on the display readout) and its quite enough, turning it up to 50-55 it gives the feeling of having a pair of headphones on 😁
Was thinking of upgrading to the Naim Unit Nova, but i dont know if i have to unless i move to a bigger appartement.
Try listening to
"My future or Billie Bossa Nova / Billie Eilish"
"The Gold (Acoustic) or I know how to speak / Manchester Orchestra"
that will give you some goosebumps hehe
I will stick to my $399 Denon that can stream Spotify. I can't afford this thing...lol
I don't always subscribe to channels without watching the content that UA-camrs deliver... but your channel has been the one to watch and is sad to say that I didn't subscribe sooner because your content is premium and top-notch ... And now that I'm a subscriber I can say is hard to find a channel that is not biased
Keep doing what you doing no matter what your information and your you put it is one fo a kind thanks !!!!
Man, I love this channel, but I can afford none of it.
Add a power amp and it really comes into it’s own, remarkable product.
Hello Andrew, what about the Nad M10. It’s comprable and equally premium
I loved this review and I have watched your videos ever since. The humour is fanatstic, bit rates are treated with respect from a safe distance. No surprise you are up to 200,000 viewers . There is no limit and remember, just keep doing what you doing!
If apple designed it, there would be a $1,000 stand and it would only work with iTunes.
I've listened to this combo with the concept 500's and it does sound fantastic...I listened with the uniti star and it sounded even better.... brilliant product, thanks for your brilliant reviews...from the UK 👌
“Naim Uniti Atom” count: 48,672 times. 🙄
Does the Naim compare to the Denon PMA-150H? Or how does the Denon fair to the Naim?
What's the name again?
Naim has three streamer/DAC combos not in the uniti line. The cheapest is $200 more than the Atom, all the way up to a $12,000 option.
Just got my first Naim product, a used Nait 5i amplifier. It is so good that I feel foolish for not getting Naim stuff earlier. Live and learn eh.
Way too expensive for a mere 40 watt amplifier. User interface may be world class, and the amp may be still be great at 40 watts, but it's still only 40 watts.
You will probably be fine with 40w. I’ve heard awesome amps from 30wpc to 200wpc. There’s more to an amp than power numbers.
@@deepriver86I have both I like both Evo 150 is smoother and will drive larger rooms better
@@martinaston1715
Interesting.
Is this a paid review? The endless awkward repetition of the full name seems a red flag.
No.
When I first saw the Atom, my jaw dropped to the floor, what a work of art! then I heard it.... Sold!
It is a really nice design. Thanks for watching!
This streamer "screams" Apple? Does that mean it costs twice what its worth? :)
Apple has never overpriced a product like this one. How about 10 times what it is worth? That is Naim
From the same House, BlueSound Powernode 2i(i have the 2), don't have a screen, might not sound as refined, but none the less, a more budget friendly option. Either way, great review... again. :)
Hope to be able to test that idea out shortly. Thanks for watching!
I agree! I have the Node 2i, so no amplification in it, but it's really good! Bluesound App is good too!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Thanks for providing good content.
3:01. Only 40 watts per channel (wpc)???
Bye!
Yea, over $3000, and only 40 watts, made me almost choke on my coffee.
Detonate Klubstompers You cannot compare 1:1. These are Naim-watts, backed up be a very good power supply, meaning it will in reality sound louder than 40 watts.
@@mr.hansen8433 Wow, so what a whole 60 watts then? I stick with my Sansui 9090bd with 200 watts a channel x4 or my Crown with 200 watts x8 at 8 ohms.
Thanks for taking the time to refine your fantastic review at the level of this gorgeous product.
Made in the UK

How it like 3 months in?
I think you said “uniti atom” 700 times
That was NAIM Uniti Atom (700 times).
0:00 - 6:48 yeah I'm starting to understand why I might want one.

Excellent review, I'll definitely consider this, or something like it, longer term.
It only reeks of apple if you're an apple fan. Personally, I'm not, so thank the lord Jobs didn't have a say on this... The fact it made in Britain won me over and head to head with Cambridge it took the edge... Apple... Don't be silly.... Ffs
i worked in a audio video shop and whe had these naim unity atom i absolutly loved it i conected it to revels, focals,bw,sonus fabers
Lost me at $3295. I'm out.
What a load of crap. My integrated NAD hooked up to my phone (or better yet my CD player) will blow this POS away at a fraction of the price.
I agree. A BENCHMARK dac would destroy the Naim.
SDMacMan really?
@@richardsinger01 people who like Nad sound have not heard a good sound.
Not even close.
@@cinqo7 If you like Benchmark, great. I find them totally soulless. That's what folks like different gear, different tastes.
I am a big TIdal fan. Also like good movie sound, but not necessarily needing surround. This seems like a win for what I want in a minimalist setup.
I believe that Naim doesn’t handle Tidal’s MQA (master) therefore it is reduce automatically meaning no hi Res despite paying Tidal for it.
@@victorlazzlo7626 I ended up buying the NAD C700. Happy with it.
overpriced Naim junk.
Wasn't paid a dime, and if I had been I would've disclosed it at the beginning of the video.
I see we've reached the "must've been paid" segment of the comment section.
Every video.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the nicely done review.
An nice example for a rubbish user interaction (from my point of view) is the following scenario:
When you listen to the Web Radio in your favourite list and you change the radio station directly at the atom by pushing the favourite button on the Atom, the symbols appear in large size on the screen of the atom.
Power off button in the app
Really strange I found that to shut down the atom you need to hangle through the app by pushing the small preferences button and there you will find the “power off” button.
My conclusion:
A very well masterpiece of hardware with room for improvement . Especially on the App side when it comes to settings.
All the best
G.
An update:
Seems Someone at Naim was hearing my prayers 😀
The issue I mentioned with the radio station symbols when changing them with the remote control are fixed.
