I really like Superstars, it's not trying to replicate the classics, but takes a more gimmicky approach without overlapping the classic formula, ngl I'm a little biased over it bc I'm a sucker for platformers lol. My only letdown is the price
How I would improve this game:
•Improve the graphics, I think the game's pretty, but remove the background blur and add more details to the stage
•Music, Jun is a great composer, but please don't lol
•Fix the difficulty spikes
•Make bosses have a 3-4 hit phase
•Online co-op, and give it a competition mode like Mario 3d World, where the person with most points gets a crown or smth like that
•Fix bugs and glitches
•Mighty and Ray (Superstars Plus?)
•More skins/customization (come on, Sonic Team)
•More exclusive acts (maybe), and make so all players can use the same character in these acts (4 Sonics, 4 Amys etc).
I would’ve paid $30-40 dollars for this game 😅.

I think people are overreacting to the title. This game, much like Frontiers, was intended to be the first step into the next decade of Sonic games. As for how to get over the "first step" phase, we need a good follow up to both. Generations and Mania didn't really have that. But this time we know the plan is to use these games as the foundation.
See, id agree with this being a good first step, only if mania didn't exist and wasnt vastly superior. This is more of an awkward fumble forward.

Honestly, as irritating as it is to keep getting ‘great first steps’, I don’t think I’ve ever really felt more confident in the future. If we can get Sonic Team refining the open zone, Arzest refining Classic Sonic, and maybe some spin offs in between, like Sumo doing another racing game (hopefully one that doesn’t die instantly), I think we’ll be eating good for the far off future. Just need to see it happen, please don’t let me down
I like how when forces comes out, people are like "im tired of mediocre sonic game", then when frontiers and superstars comes out its "im tired of good enough games", what's next? Im tired of great games and i want masterpieces?

That's probably a sentiment because of the long gap between Forces and Frontiers. The longer a game is in development for the more everyone expects which makes problems like the pop-in or reused assets of Cyber Space more glaring.

Right? They're good games. Are they the best games? No but they're still good, they're still fun to play. I'm not saying I don't want them to improve further and build upon what they've got here but I feel like so much of the discussion is about what they can do better next time, rather than appreciating what the game in front of them right now does well and enjoying it.
I’m gonna wait a couple weeks before buying it. I’m more excited to play Mario Wonder and I don’t want Wonder to completely overshadow this game. And I also don’t want to spend $60 in the same week.
Wasn’t like every level in the classic sonic games gimmicky? Wacky Workbench forced you to stay low but the ground would bounce you to the top, Angel Island had Mushrooms that you could use like springs, Labyrinth zone was underwater, casino night zone gave us slots and excessive bumpers, marble hill zone was about avoiding lava and moving underground. So far this sounds exactly what I’d expect a classic sonic game to be using a speedster for slower platforming. You just gotta look for the fastest route and attempt it again for speed runs. As for the boss fights it looks like for the major ones it’s still the classic hit the boss 8 times but now it’s more strategic.
Here in Brazil, some big youtubers here are kinda dissapointed. And to top it off, the 60$ price kinda sucks dog water.

Sonic Superstars is amazing Classic Sonic Game and I had such a amazing experience with playing Sonic Superstars. I give Sonic Superstars 8/10 I wish I could give this game a 10/10 but I give this game a 8/10. My favorite character to play in Sonic Superstars is Classic Sonic. The Trip story was very cool and I love how they added a Trip Storyline. Sonic Superstars is definitely very polished and I really fun to play. I’m definitely going to be coming back to Sonic Superstars. (Great video Review)

Mania was a step in the right direction. This is an awkward misstep in a direction.
I feel that the level desing is great! it isnt mania for sure and sometimes they can look a bit bland... but most of the stages you can progress through the level without being hindered by to many obstacles so it becomes easier to build up speed and react to the eviroment without beeing too easy or too unfair. Thats the essence of sonic! it was super fun! love it :)
Ik people think this is annoying, but I love the artstyle. Sure, the graphics aren’t the best, but the vibe is just so nostalgic. Not for earlier sonic games either, it just feels so dream like

Id argue mania had it easy they reused so much level design and didn't add too much so therefore not much could go wrong so I think superstars is better overall because it takes risks and didn't trace the lines of what worked before no hate to mania
Didn't add too much? Not counting the new zones, every reused zone was an upgrade from the original, and each of their act 2s is a completely new level design.
from the gameplay i've seen, this feels more like Sonic Advance 1 than any of the Genesis games (minus the bottomless pits)

I spent forever on that last boss, sure it would have been a cake walk with Sonic with a drop dash, but I was Knuckles and let me tell you there was no chuckling to be had. Get hit once from something you can out run or weren't expecting yet, and it's redo the last 5 minutes of waiting around. It was really very hard once you figure it out, but my god, the difficulty is an illusion based on how long it takes to get back to that point in the fight. You're going back 8 minutes, one hit sideswipe that's faster than poor knuckles and it's going back 12 minutes, I tell you 15 minutes everytime. If he's not already far enough on the right side of the screen, you're just dead, gliding doesn't help either, it's just there to remind you of the failure as you feebly attempt to recover from an impossible position. Half an hour every time, really made it drag on.

I still think that 3&K will be better, but I can't choose between Mania and this. You know, if price of the game was 40$, I practically without any doubt would put this game in my second place (of Classic Sonic Games), because it's obviously better than 1,2 and CD (for me personally). Mania is great and Superstars is great BUT BOTH ARE NOT PERFECT (each for its own reasons). And I probably will go with Superstars. Because price is still a matter of time, soo I think that's it :P
For a series about running fast, they sure are comfortable with baby steps.

I have a few things I like about Sonic Superstars 1. I LIKE how SEGA is Using different Zones instead Of Reusing them 2. The New Charecter design By Sonic OG creator.

I’ve played up to the final boss and I’ve loved it. I did not see myself beating this game in one sitting. While I don’t think it’s as good as Mania, in my opinion it’s one of the better 2D sonic games
Fair review, I'll prob wait for a sale, however I do always cringe that whenever a Sonic game (or pretty much any 2D platformer) being $50-$60 is unacceptable and to wait for a sale and yet whenever Nintendo do it for a new Mario game its never acknowledged. Like I understand that they're guaranteed quality, but still, it is insane to me.

Wait what was that one really hard part in the game that youre talking about?
My thoughts on the game so far after reaching Zone 4: They got the physics down pretty well, but some of the level design is gimmicky and at times automated. And some of the zone names just sound so... generic to me. Like, more than the zone names of previous Classic games. Some of y'all might find it hard to understand, and I won't blame you for it.
The music so far is good, barring Jun Senoue who's irritatingly still persisting in pushing his infamous Sonic 4 instrumentation into Classic Sonic games - guy's had years to realize we don't like it and should just leave it to other composers to handle the soundtrack. Or at the very least let someone else do the instrumentation, because his infamous work has legit been made better when remixed by somebody else. We love this guy for what he contributed to Modern Sonic's music, but he clearly doesn't have the charm for Classic Sonic music back when he composed for Sonic 3D Blast.
I'm probably just playing terribly at certain parts, but I swear some of the enemy/hazard placement feels cheap, like I legit didn't see it coming. Other than all I've complained about, yeah, this game shows promise that, if all these issues were fixed, there'll be less of those obnoxious doomposters around to shit on the recent games and there'll be more Sonic fans with hope for future games.

Sonic superstars is a nice fun game to play through casually. I love the game, I’m just trying to forget how much I spent on it :’)
The Game grew on me. I started it and it felt dissapointing. After replaying the levels again for a 2nd time, the Game went from 6,5 to 8/10. I had a blast after learning how to use the emerald powers. Id say its better than 1 and CD. But 2, 3K and Mania are still better

Def gonna be waiting. I was sitting on that fence hard. huge sonic fan but Man- I'd rather just pick up the metal gear solid ports coming in 5 days.
I played donkey kong country tropical freeze. when my father first bought it i spent like 3 hours on it and didnt come back until like a year and a half later. that time however i could not stop. i had to beat the game. I was having fun, at the same time i was raging because sometimes this game aint giving you a break i swear. but i think i still enjoyed it enough to be sure that i will enjoy sonic superstars. i mean. i know im going to enjoy it its sonic.

To me, graphics have always been secondary. For what it's worth, I think this game has really good graphics. The Frozen Base Zone is the only one I'm not too fond of graphically. But it's all secondary anyway; some of the greatest games didn't have stellar graphics. I thought Super Mario World's graphics were quite bland even when the game first released and yet it is one of the best games ever made.
Having said that, let's move past graphics altogether.
I appreciate this game for offering a lot of new stuff to 2D Sonic. It has some wildly inventive level gimmicks.
Gameplay is most important and this game plays great in my opinion. Really great. This isn't the Sonic 4 debacle. This feels like a continuation of 2D Sonic. If Sonic Mania is the de facto *real* Sonic 4, then this is the de facto Mania 2. Not having the same devs shouldn't stop it.
A complaint lobbed at Superstars sometimes is that it is a slow platformer and people somehow don't like that idea (I love that idea because Sonic was never about speed in my book...even as far back as the first Sonic). But, this game is, in fact, quite fast. I have been able to run and whiz about these levels as fast as Chemical Plant in Sonic 2. This game is way speedier than most people give it credit for.
Except, perhaps, in the case of the bosses.
I find these to be the most fun bosses of any Sonic game. Now, I am not too big on platformers that are easy. My video game playing pedigree includes speedrunning Castlevania 1, Rondo of Blood, Contra: Hard Corps among others. I don't just like difficult, I like difficult almost exclusively in video games. The bosses in this game give me a big smile on my face. I love the endurance present in the fights. The wait to hit the bosses sometimes means dodging a barrage of projectiles and obstacles. That is the endurance I look for in games. Needless to say, I have been a fan of old-school shooters since before they were old school. Xevious in the early '80s got me hooked.
This game also uses a lot of previously unused prototype concepts from Sonic. Golden Capital Zone is based on concept art for Sonic 1. And it is a glorious level.
One of the coolest things about Mania was the Puyo Puyo boss fight. Superstars assumes the mantle by including Arkanoid segments in one of the levels as well as shooter stages inspired by Fantasy Zone. It is really exhilarating.
This is my second fave Sonic game behind Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
This is a hot take . But I've played sonic mania . And didn't like it much . I don't know man I've tried . It's fun and all but I felt like it's generally just more S3&k stages with less putting input. I've seen countless people saying it's fantastic pixel art and gimmicks . I Know . I appreciate it . But to feel this I always have to try and concentrate on this things to feel the joy of it and I'm only playing a game to enjoy not to concentrate like I'm on a school. Idk man . But something on superstars really attracts me . I want to play it man . Idk if I have to see a doctor
From my time with mania I realized that while it really is brilliant, but you have to learn the game to unlock that brilliance, which is honestly its biggest flaw. I didn't like stardust speedway, flying battery, lava reef, metallic madness or titanic monarch for my first couple playthroughs. I know that you're not really supposed to be good at the game at first, but you should still be able to enjoy it on your first playthrough, and I couldn't.
I just beat the entirety of this game and if this is considered the hardest sonic game then me and many others must be God's at this because the most I died is once or twice after the 7th zone😭

I love this game. I don’t understand the comparison to Mania . I already played Mania . On Sonic 2 ,3 , Sonic & Knuckles. At least SuperStars showed innovation. And it’s all about replay ability. More then one route. Not all just speed.

This is actually my favorite 2D Sonic game ever BECAUSE of the difficulty and the long bosses. Very few deaths felt like true BS to me, especially the final bosses that obliterate you body and soul. What can I say.
That said, haven’t tried Mania yet.

That's actually pretty ironic considering the general consensus on Lost World despite your opinion on it because it looked like a Mario game in spite of the fact that it played like a Sonic game (until certain mechanics happened). I mean I haven't played Lost World so I'm indifferent towards it but that original opinion/expectation of yours was pretty pot meeting kettle. No offense since I understand you had a change of heart but yeah still pretty ironic.
Tbf classic sonic was never about speed. The first 2 acts where yeah but likes of marble zone chemical plant. After stage 1 is when the puzzles being

Dude, I was on a boss for 2 days. I finally beat the game and I felt great (AND TIRED). 8/10 Game.
Why are you guys acting like we have a bunch of steps in the right direction? We literally only have 2, Frontiers and Superstars. One in 3d and other in 2d. Everything else, Lost World, boom, forces... was a step in the WRONG direction

I rather wait for Superstars to go on sale of at least 40 dollars. I am a Sonic fan and from the content to the visuals, it looks amazing but I can see myself paying 60 dollars for a Sonic game that everyone might enjoy, especially if Sega releases a DLC or two to add more to the full game. Forty dollars is a fair and balance price tag for Sonic Superstars. But hey, that's just me. I sure other people have similar opinions.

How is a classic style 2D sidescroller from a decades-old franchise with over 30 mainline titles a "first step" of any kind? I'm not disparaging the game or the idea of 2D platformers, that's just a strange title.

In my country it costs R$300,00. No way! I won't buy it in this price if it doesn't have the same quality from Sonic Mania. I didn't like it this much. And I feel I'm not alone. I still want the Mania Team back.
Takashi Izuka already says that making a 2D Sonic game with pixel will mostly interest fans and would risk to be seen as a niche game (that's why he wanted 3D elements to feel more modern and to add more animations in the background).
