They made a living by launching attacks towards Moscow, and Polish Ukraine: the slaves were sold in the oriental markets. The Ottomans, despite the reforms were not able to stop the Russian army, so the only chance is foreign intervention: British and french in the Crimean war, and from the 1870 to the end of WWI Germany. The drunken cossacks write a reply to the Sultan´s haughty letter. Orthodox and free men within Russia, they do not consult Russian authorities. The letter was rough and directed to the Sultan of the big but weakened Ottoman Empire,who also held the title of Caliph (head of all the Sunni Muslim). They even use the vulgar expression Ëб Tвою мать! ( Go and...your mother) in the letter: something that the Russian authorities wouldn´t have allowed. In short: Repin longs for a kind of life and free society that is totally absent in the Russia due to the Serfdom Laws, an indirect slavery system that led to the 1917 revolutions.
