Pahiyangala is situated in the district of Kalutara, Western Province, Sri Lanka Tucked away in the heart of Sri Lanka, Pahiangala Cave holds secrets of our human story that stretch back thousands of years. Here, our early ancestors, known locally as "Balangoda Man," made their home around 48,000 years ago, leaving behind clues to their lives that still fascinate us today.
Among the most exciting finds are the bones of “Homo sapiens sapiens”, dating back about 3,800 years. These are some of the oldest human remains found in South Asia, showing us how our ancient relatives lived. They crafted tools from animals and bones, showing their cleverness in making things to help them survive.
But it's not just about tools. The Pahiyangala cave also tells us about what these people ate. They hunted animals like monkeys and sambars for food and used their bones to make tools. The remains of these creatures tell us a lot about the environment they lived in.
Pahian Cave or Pahiyangala wasn't just a home, it was a meeting place. Evidence shows that people here traded with others living near the coast, around 48,000 years ago. They even made jewelry, some of the earliest found outside of Africa, showing their sense of beauty and style.
For archaeologists, Pahiyangala Cave is like a time machine, helping us understand how our ancestors lived and how they interacted with the world around them. And for all of us, it's a reminder of our shared human history and the mysteries waiting to be uncovered.
