Hello everybody. This is Juan Pablo, the writer/director of the film. Thank you to the cast and crew who made this film possible and to ALTER for your support of our project. We're excited to hear your thoughts about the film.
Omg that quote is so on point. I know from extensive experience with both sides of the coin. But with what I've learned I'd rather live tormented, then rebuild. Just like the woman in the movie. Like me, she was hurt so badly in the past to the point of trusting no one, but she's still making a life for herself, even though she feels lonely sometimes.
If I was the guy I'd tell her to shoot me rather than go back outside, that way she'd have to live with actually physically murdering him herself. She'd probably think twice. If not then, dying by a bullet seems much more of a quick and easy death than having to deal with the creatures and what they'd do to you.
I found it so sad. Living is not only eating, sleeping and surviving... Living is also loving and feeling loved. Living alone in the woods can be a good life, but living alone in the woods surrounded by nightly monsters is not so good. Being with someone else must help a lot
Lesson #1 Never trust anybody. Lesson #2 Never trust ANYONE. Lesson #3 Sometimes you can't trust yourself. There were some terrifyingly haunting visuals in this film. Loved it.
I like the title and how the film depicts the history as it refers to us as people. The trauma we suffer that turns us into the very monsters that we try to avoid and shield ourselves from.
I seriously never ask for full feature films but THIS would be an awesome one. So many questions. But one is never a question : Alter will never end with a happy romance. And for that, I’m ever thankful. BRAVO 👏 ❤️
Thank you, Kate! I'm glad you liked it. The questions are the best part for me. The feature version is already written, hopefully we'll get to make it soon!
I love how the main character is handled here. Morally questionable in a very reasonable and understandable way. The guy did nothing wrong, being entirely reactive to her actions the moment he entered. I haven't seen that from horror short films for a while. Well done!
Happy Thanksgiving, Juan Pablo, ALTER, and everyone in the comment section. I wish those monsters developed some traits of viciousness, but they were disturbing. They were stalking their victims instead of running.
Throughout the whole film, I had the feeling that this is about relationships. You need one (at least your body often claims it does), but due to past abuse and scars, this is a struggle. As a single woman, living alone and being happy for the first time in my life, I feel threatened every time people are overly sweet in the beginning but become aggressive when I express my doubts/fears. I loved the fact that in the end she chose to be alone - but safe. It takes a lot of courage. I think these monsters are slow and weak because they represent past trauma. They are always present, they need us to let them in, we try to run away from them but eventually, they devour people in our lives if we let them. Loved it! Thanks
I wonder if you would say the same thing if the genders were reversed, the guy tied up a woman in his house and advanced her without consent, to then suddenly have a change of heart and throw her out while she's wounded to an almost guaranteed death. I wonder.
@@fedea82 You are 100% right. If that had happened, the film's meaning would shift its meaning for many people. Why? Because we are all biased. This is how society works. It's not healthy. But for me the characters were never real. The situation was never about what's really happening. It was all about symbols and psychology. I related instantly to the woman because I am a woman. This made me more immersed in the story, nothing else. My male best friend is currently dealing with the same exact problem in a very similar fashion. So the answer is no. My perspective wouldn't change. It would be about relationships.
@@floraszabo1592 you started your comment saying we are all biased but then end it saying you wouldnt change your perspective if the genders were reversed. Smells fishy. And I don't know about the film being "about relationships", since the way she acted was disgusting. I'm certain that most relations don't end up in cold blooded murder. You can say the film is not about that all you want..but that's what's portrayed in it.
@@fedea82 yeah... I can see you are here to argue and nitpick every word. If you think someone can't admit that they were raised in an unhealthy society, knowing exactly what people see when the gerders are swapped AND still fight ingrated social bias and norms, then you are not worth replying anymore. Amazingly beatiful and sad at the same time. Excellent topic and title, great acting, very well edited. You could feel her fear, desire and dilemma under your skin. She didn" t dare to take the risk to feel as a human again and became one of the creatures herself. The creatures were fantastically made. I was so glad not to see idiot zombies! !:) Congratulations!
Kudos to Juan Pablo Muñoz, you created one of the best short horror stories I seen in awhile! The actors were brilliant and I love the fact they were bilingual, it’s so refreshing to see new, talented Latino actors, writers, and directors creating such terrific work! Good luck with all your endeavors mijito y que Dios te bendiga!!!
A history of monsters. A history of trauma. Sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, or that’s what we tell ourselves after repeatedly being hurt has taken its toll.
You can't blame her. It gets to a point where you can't trust anyone. I don't think I could trust a stranger that I found miles from anywhere. Great film!
@@yazzythecattyweirdo188 women are sexual being too, Yazzy. She hasn’t seen a human in a long time. But with sex cames a ton of baggage from her past traumas.
True survival horror. I know a lot of us fantasize about end of the world scenarios. The truth of it is, it would be lonely and bloody. Think of all the people you've encountered in your life who pretended to be something they weren't just to get something from you. Now imagine there's no government, laws, or police. A world where you can't afford to make the wrong decision on a person you don't know. Frightening isn't it? 😱😳🙀
No, it's not a survival horror at all, it's about self conflict because of a trauma caused in the past by being raped by someone, she thought was her friend.
@@stefanba2029 so you're saying being raped isn't a form of survival horror? Rapists don't seem like monsters to you? Especially to someone that is isolated? As I said in my comment, to make the wrong choice for someone in her scenario means losing everything. Can you imagine living isolated from the rest of the world only to trust someone who then chains you to a wall and uses you as a sex toy? Well I guess we agree to disagree because to me, that sounds like survival horror. Maybe not the way the term is popularly used for video games, but the truest sense of the term.
There’s been plenty of times in history when people thought the world was ending and the majority of humans didn’t become monsters who killed each other.
Yeah.. didn't untie him, took advantage of him while he was tied up, acted like it was his fault then killed him by giving him as food to the monsters... Yay.
Sorry, but she's a flake. Basically killed the man for no good reason. He had multiple opportunities to harm her, but didn't. That's what isolation can do to you. Seriously interfere with cognitive abilities...
I loved how the "zombies" so to speak, were simple, not rotting like the cliche zombies on TWD etc...they were, however, extremely disturbing. I loved how they are slow walking, rather ,stalking their prey. Beautiful love story, she wanted so bad to trust, to let him in, but she had been burned and would not take that chance...it's either live, the only way she knows now, (isolated and alone and stay alive) or take that chance of letting someone in/giving in to urges and being betrayed and killed because she trusted too much or let her sexual desires take over rather than survival...sad, but extremely good. I wanted so bad for her to fall in love and live happily ever after...but we know that is NOT the Alter way! Bravo!!! GREAT acting.
Wow this one was really good! Usually I find s*xual ass*ult or r*pe as a backstory feels very tacked on for shock value, it often doesn't add anything to the work and sometimes is badly mishandled in a way that's upsetting but it certainly wasn't the case here. Her backstory gives depth to the character's actions and choices. You handle it beautifully in the writing and the actress also performs the character with such dignity. I like the ambiguity of the man's intentions, not only does it allow for audiences to really think about the story but it gives space for a very realistic third option to whether he's going to hurt her or not which is that maybe he wouldn't intend to but he still would end up hurting her by mistake at some point. She has serious trauma, it's easy for someone to hurt someone with trauma on accident. Again this film was really good, I hope many people get to see this!
Fully agree with you there, I also liked that the "betrayal" was kept ambiguous, even though due to the sexual undertones it is definitely not a far shot from what probably happened. Its actually really hard for me to watch anything non-consent related due to still heavy PTSD but this hit the nail on the head without being too upfront/shock value about it. The actress also did an amazing job portraying being torn between her own needs and wanting to be loved/feel pleasure/trust again, and just the sheer horror that is now ingrained in her system from that incident. They handled the topic rather respectfully and real, unlike many popular movies with more budget and bigger crew. Also kinda glad I wasnt the only one "projecting" that conclusion in there, it was rather vague after all.
Hard Agree. I feel like poeple who want to use SA need to be responsible about it. This was a good example. I don't remember where I heard this but someone had some good writing advice. Don't use SA in your stories if you can get the same effect with something else.
I wasn't going to comment on this film...I rarely do; however, after watching it a second time, I'll go ahead with my comments, as well as an opinion. First of all, the entire production, from the script, to the setting, to the cinematography and mostly to the excellent acting by the two characters and especially actress, was nothing short of outstanding and I do not say that lightly. Without a doubt, one of the top 20 movies I've seen over the past 6-7 years, during which I've easily seen 250-300. I really liked the way the "others" were portrayed and since they were most definitely not like the run-of-the-mill (asinine) zombie types, IMHO, they were far more reminiscent of ET's, or inter-dimensional beings. At the very least, this could have easily been made into a one hour movie...keep up the outstanding work and thank you for this magnificent effort!
So it's like 'once broken, always broken'? And we should never try to deal with the traumatized ones because they will never completely get over their past trauma and the innocent ones will have to suffer for the crime committed by someone? Ok lesson learnt 😌
No, I would not say ALWAYS broken. People can heal, but it hurts and you need to feel like you’re not in survival mode to undertake that work. A good therapist is usually part of the process as well. Instead, I would say “hurt people hurt people.” You don’t always have to be hurt, but not everyone is interested in healing or puts in the work.
She's worse than any monster in this movie, including her ex. This is a powerful film about how we let our PERSONAL experiences make us the FINAL authority ON OTHER PEOPLE'S outcomes. Too many people think everyone else is the monster. Most of the things that survive are monsters who grew their talons late. THIS FILM IS AMAZING
4 mins in and i'm already terrified, i can tell this is going to be good. edit: (btw when the monster appeared in front of her in the house when she was sleeping my heart legit skipped beats, my fight or flight kicked in for a second from fear) after finishing this I felt paranoid for a bit and my brother came into my room, i told him about it and my body was shaking like crazy remembering how creepy the creatures were. to me, true horror is the unknown, especially when it comes to something that is a definite threat. the monsters were slow, they stalked the characters. they only made noise when they knew they were already seen by people. that haunting knowledge that they could be watching without knowing is truly terrifying. a similar short under this same channel called "Other Side of the Box" is equally terrifying. the blank expressions and stares, the lack of sound the creatures make. and on top of that, the whole "weeping angel" factor makes it even more terrifying. knowing that the poor people had to stare at such a freaky creature to stay alive is unsettling. (i straight up can't look at the thumbnail for said video because the mere face of the man is so unsettling) not often am I scared by loud or extremely fast monsters, but the ones that loom and stalk. the silent entities that are so hard to figure out. though once figuring out a creature that is slow, it's usually easy to avoid, but the knowledge that it might be watching still creeps me out. (sorry for such a long comment, i was just really freaked out by this kind of horror and how well it was presented, *very big applause to the actors and the director/writer for being able to pull this off*. nothing has had me this freaked out in a while. especially in the horror film genre. many horror movies nowadays are cliched, but this kind of horror will forever creep me out. it constantly felt like something bad would happen, I was always awaiting a jumpscare.)
Ooouuu! Loved that! Would love to see a full film! I’m so intrigued by these monsters!!! They’re creepy to the core! Would love to see their backstories and learn how they got that way or where they came from!
Very interesting to see a woman in a horror film who doesnt immediately get love struck over some guy that she’s just met five mins ago and ends up betrayed. Although it can be perceived that she’s losing her humanity I think that she’s functioning at her most primal level. She cares about her survival to an even higher degree than her exasperated sexual 4:38 urges that we saw expressed in the opening scene. Wants vs Needs. She’s learned from her mistakes. Maybe a metaphor for having your guard up with partners after past relationships which have left you with emotional baggage. Her fort to protect her from the monsters (toxic men?) out there and then maybe the male character is supposed to be “a nice guy” attempting to win her trust to no avail. Great work! ❤
It doesn't look like she's learning from her mistakes, it looks like she's becoming like the things that hurt her in the first place. Took advantage of a tied up man, acted like it was his fault and then basically killed him in the most cruel manner.
Just imagine the story switching both main characters' gender. Wonder if you would still be thinking that the guy that sexually assaulted the tied, injured woman and then killing her was just "learning from his mistakes"... She could have pushed him out during daylight but, in an act of cruelty, she preferred to leave him without any chance of survival.
I have a sneaking suspicion that if this kind of scenario were to ever unfold here on Earth as you've shown it in your film, nine times out of ten, THIS would be the outcome any time someone decided to take a chance on going against their own hard-set rules and by hooking up with someone encountered in a secluded area... They'd change their mind, revert to form, things would get ugly for a minute there, then it's back to the awful norm.
I think he was human and as such had the potential for both depending on circumstance. In a post-apocalyptic world, opportunistic is the word of the day.
What a brilliant film.....I'd love to see a full length movie of this ....I loved the story ..eve has been through and seen so much horror that she trusts no one... she fights her urge to be with the guy so much it makes her angry and turns her back to her basic human instinct to survive ....amazing well done to all involved
This is a great horror short, and it is very relatable because, ghouls aside, it happens to us in real life. All of us have emotional baggage, ghosts from the past that stalk us and sometimes confront us in the here and now. We can feel haunted by past experiences and develop barriers to our future happiness because we cannot appropriately process the feelings that arise from our interactions with others. We sometimes shut people out, rather than risk the possibility of being hurt again. To me, that is what the ghouls represent - the often subconscious feelings that we are prisoner to, that influence us to sabotage ourselves as we try to move forward after being let down. I really enjoyed this. The atmosphere was intense, neither person was able to sleep in the other’s presence, and her actions can be seen as both logical and illogical at the same time.
Yeah, no. What's the deal with the humanoid creatures? The actress was good. Her in the position she was in... Willing to hurt yourself so that the other person doesn't have a chance to hurt her. Heartbreaking.
Thank you, Michael! We were trying to embrace the only sources you would find in the post apocalyptic world. There's no electricity and you would mostly live in the dark.
One of the best horror shorts I’ve seen. A+ across the board from the writing, to the acting, to the cinematography (speaking as a seasoned horror fan but expert in none of the above, I just know what I like 😉). I hope you have done more work since. Best of luck.
I just wanna say thank you for sharing this! It's a fantastic story and movie and to pack so much depth into such a short format is so incredible to me. It must be the hardest thing to do as a storyteller. I've seen 3 hour movies that don't have as much depth of character or story. As for my interpretation... I really like that you did not focus on the monsters. Don't get me wrong. I really love a good monster movie. But only if it's well done. In your story however, the monsters - what are they, what was the triggering event, eating habits, motivation... all irrelevant. They are more a part of the environment. Not necessarily a character, if that makes sense. What is relevant about them is they have collapsed society. And that's all we really need to know. This collapse has forced mankind into a more base state of existence. The further away from a civilized society, people become, the closer they get to more animalistic/monster type of behavior. And the more it becomes acceptable in the morality code of the characters. I really like how this movie blurs the line between who the real monster is in the story. Is it the man? The woman? Or is it the actual monsters outside? Maybe the monster is humankind's nature? Ultimately for me, the monster is the woman's desire. She knows herself well enough to understand that over time, she will not be able to control her desire for this man (or any other). The longer he stays, her guard will eventually come down and she will succumb to her primal desires. Her desire will make her vulnerable and weak (unforgiving traits in this new world) and susceptible to more abuse. It seems to me, she made a promise to herself to never willingly put herself into a position that will make her powerless again. So she immediately ejects the man preemptively - before he becomes physically strong. Her resolve has already greatly weakened in just a couple days. She knows that soon, he will overpower her - through violence or seduction - the 'how' is moot. By kicking the guy out, she has chosen to willingly eliminate her instinctual desire for men - a monstrous fate. She will live a life of solitude and loneliness. Bereft of all desire and passion. A monster is born. Thanks for sticking to the end. Sorry it's so long but you're the one who made the movie so complicated 🙂
In a world of chaos and a pandemic, choose to follow your brain and protect yourself. Don’t always follow your heart. I think she made the best choice in the end. Past trauma shapes us. She choose herself. ❤️
BS, she didnt have to kick him out nor untie him. You don't need to be a hero nor a villain. The only reason she toyed with him was sexual urges, what a gross human being.
@@fedea82 she didn’t trust him. Why should she? The last guy she trusted raped her. Her house, her choice. Sex is a natural part of beeing a human. She didn’t let the sex urge be the reason for him to stay.
@@louisafeliza her house her choice? Can you invite people to a helicopter ride and throw them out midair??? You understand she threw him to his death after saving him and trying to have sex w him just because he asked to be untied? She could have literally waited a few hs until daylight at least. The guy was wounded and tied, and she had a gun. And his crime was....what exactly? Feminism has rotten your brain to the point of defending murder. Reverse the genders and tell me you would say the same things. Of course you wouldnt.
Y'all I got the brightness as high as it can possibly go but I'll be damned if you can't see much of anything 1/3 of the short 😅🤣 Liked the concept though, and the real feel
Wow, really good. I loved it. Evelyn is a monster in her own way. We humans have a monster inside of us and we let it overtake us in order to survive. She actually made a good decision since she is not really sure if the guy will be good at her once she unties him. It is a matter of survival. Good movie though. Need more!!!!
It reminds of that one alter short where a girl who just moved in at an apartment who tried to befriend an anxious guy but suddenly that guy inappropriately touched her so she killed him which I think she was haunted by her past trauma.
I think that she didn’t trust him, like she only got close and touchy because of pent up frustrations if you will, but she decided safety over desires and kicked him out, scared that he may take advantage of her.
@@gunsmokeandghouls I would guess she felt an obligation to save him initially. But then she realized she felt he was a threat as well, and she was better off trying to survive without him/keeping the enemies outside the hut.
This is the history of monsters. The beginning I imagine. Hence why everything looks so beautiful and is so pure. The mushrooms even have a beautiful look. So there’s these horrible monsters in the woods but then there’s also this woman who survived ….Where she might be a different kind of monster. I didn’t see a sign that he was one (yet) but it definitely suggests to me that she could’ve been just a different type of monster.
I would say the opposite, she is a survivor to her last friend and this man was also a potential predator, so just another future monster in her perspective. All the apologies, all the "trust me", the harsh orders "untie me" - I see red flags, he wasn't answering questions, he was disobeying and untrustworthy from start to finish, not patient and failed every trust test. He didn't get that he was threatening her. But he showed her he couldn't be trusted in the future as he wasn't learning to show the respect she needed to gain trust.
@@fatimarice1117 I would say some people survive life in a manipulative way. It doesn’t make them bad people necessarily. But it does not make them trustworthy. He should not have gone along with the kissing knowing what she just told him. He tried to leverage her loneliness. It bit him in the 🍑
That was excellently done! The kissing scene was nice and totally understood, but she knew where to draw the line. She can never ever trust anybody. It's better to err on the side of caution. "Trust No One! Lovely "dusty rose" vistas.
YES! Having that power to shut down your hoo-ha within 1 quick breath, is the greatest power any human can have 🦾🌮🔌 Anyway, my opinion of this short film.... The most frightening monsters are those that are unclothed. While odd, I appreciate monsters that are depicted realistically. Unlike humans, monsters would not be concerned with concealing their nudity. I also adore the appearance of these creatures, even though they aren't original creations from the artist's own terrifying, twisted imagination. Still, I love it!
Hurt people hurt people. One can never be too careful around people. The "monsters" can not likely help what they have become but you can try and hold your humanity. The minute she assaulted him (yes, assaulted he was her captive and at her mercy so no such thing as consent) she became on of the worst kind of monster...one that knows they have a choice and simply choses atrocity. Of course she was vulnerable, traumatized and her natural inclination was to initially help but doing nothing in that situation doesnt make you complicit. You have to be especially cognizant of what you do as a traumatized person, its not fair but you have to be careful not to traumatize others. But in this situation one never would have the space to process trauma and heal. So she can not be blamed 100% but our actions are still our own. Though in this situation you likely are safer on your own. There is no telling how another may act and one cant keep someone tied forever. Only thing I could think of is releasing him at daylight but she couldnt trust her own judgement Was nice to see a main female character who did not fall immediately into surrendering their safety completely
history of monsters starts with humans. Inside is a monster pretending to be human..but for how long can this last ? awesome short film ! begs for the mind to think 🎴
So she tied the man up then took advantage of him while he was tied up and then threw him out and left him for dead... And no one's talking about that? It doesn't matter that she has trust issues, what she did to him wasn't right, he didn't ever do anything, he only fought back when she was trying to get him killed.
While the tale of 'The History of Monsters' is complete, I hope @Juan Pablo Arias Muñoz and his brilliant cast and crew considers exploring Evelyn's world further.

Yes, a tv series! I was holding my breath. Very well done, indeed!
The tension in this was palpable and the title was fitting seeing by the end of this she became one.
Thank you, Monique! I'm glad you enjoyed it and it made sense to you.
Magnificent. Some choices in life are difficult. When it comes to survival even more so. Good work.
I wish there were more movies/series like this, where the characters speak a couple of languages. Yay for multilingual representation!!! 🥰🥰
Retelling the genesis story with another Adam and Eve. In the beginning there were monsters… and they are still here.
I love your interpretation! Thank you for sharing.
I have to agree. There’s a monster inside of all of us, just waiting…
There’s been plenty of times in history when people thought the world was ending and the majority of humans didn’t become monsters who killed each other.
I'm so happy she never untied him, lost count how many times I said "don't"! The creatures were ace! And the dream was Ace too!! Loved it!!
The whole point of the movie is that she let an innocent man die because of her trust issues

Yeah.. didn't untie him, took advantage of him while he was tied up, acted like it was his fault then killed him by giving him as food to the monsters... Yay.
This alter film hits so different from the rest of them honestly this was not what I was expecting

Very creative and profounding! However, i wish the duration of the film could be longer, many questions in my head...
Beautiful scope cinematography and lighting. Really well done overall.
Excellent film!!! Amazing actors!!! Thought provoking!
@@Gewürzfee I hope you are doing better now.
Hard Agree. I feel like poeple who want to use SA need to be responsible about it. This was a good example. I don't remember where I heard this but someone had some good writing advice. Don't use SA in your stories if you can get the same effect with something else.
@@dorkstar97 Almost a functional adult again! But thank you
I agree with y'all
I wasn't going to comment on this film...I rarely do; however, after watching it a second time, I'll go ahead with my comments, as well as an opinion. At the very least, this could have easily been made into a one hour movie...keep up the outstanding work and thank you for this magnificent effort!
u sound so wise
So it's like 'once broken, always broken'? And we should never try to deal with the traumatized ones because they will never completely get over their past trauma and the innocent ones will have to suffer for the crime committed by someone? Ok lesson learnt 😌
No, I would not say ALWAYS broken. People can heal, but it hurts and you need to feel like you’re not in survival mode to undertake that work. A good therapist is usually part of the process as well. Instead, I would say “hurt people hurt people.” You don’t always have to be hurt, but not everyone is interested in healing or puts in the work.
@@ms-corleone I think they're criticizing the film
(i straight up can't look at the thumbnail for said video because the mere face of the man is so unsettling)
not often am I scared by loud or extremely fast monsters, but the ones that loom and stalk. the silent entities that are so hard to figure out. though once figuring out a creature that is slow, it's usually easy to avoid, but the knowledge that it might be watching still creeps me out.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Olivia! It really means a lot. I love that the short had a powerful effect on you.
Ooouuu! Loved that! Would love to see a full film! I’m so intrigued by these monsters!!! They’re creepy to the core! Would love to see their backstories and learn how they got that way or where they came from!
alternatively titled ~ Attack of the Blue Willy-Wavers
Jokes aside though, this was excellently crafted short where a whole life was shown in 18 min.
🤣
I agree with you. I think this would be the outcome of any new relationship formed in a post apocalyptic world.
Humans during the Paleolithic era would probably disagree
The monsters were truly terrifying.
I wonder if Adam was a good guy or a bad guy?
I think he was human and as such had the potential for both depending on circumstance. In a post-apocalyptic world, opportunistic is the word of the day.
@@Northern_Calling true… but he didn’t really do anything to warrant that outcome… I mean she could’ve atleast threw him out during the day…

Awesome a upload today well HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALTER & to my ALTER FAMILY have a great day everyone & be safe!!
Amazing. The dark color grade was almost as brave as the protagonist.
Thank you, Michael! We were trying to embrace the only sources you would find in the post apocalyptic world. There's no electricity and you would mostly live in the dark.
Ah yes, long time has passed and they still give me a good horror film, as always.
I mean, YESSSSSSSSSSS THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK!
Excellent. Self preservation #1.

@@orcajorca7215 Even though it's never explicit, what you're saying is a big part of the film and why she makes that decision at the end.

Good job Juan ❤
Really good that.
