i was so distraught when i heard he passed away. so creative, and with such a magnificent voice. this performance was in 2015, i think? that's almost 50 years since the song was first released, and just 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 to him! strong, powerful, and clear. no sign of strain at all, even with those high notes. i'm so sorry you lost your friend, may his memory be a blessing.

It's entirely subjective, but when People says "such and such is the greatest liver performance ever," I always say, "Ok, but why is it better than White Shade of Pale in Denmark?" Gary Brooker was one of the most underrated voices of his generation. An absolute legend, and sorely missed.

I am 76 years old and still enjoy “pop” music. I was born and raised in Canada so British rock groups were always played here. At that time high school was 5 years. So at 19 I graduated in 1967 the year this was released. I still have to say this was my all time favorite even after all this time.

Always puts a massive smile on my face to see young people discovering the music I grew up on. I've heard many orchestral arrangements of this song, but this one is by far the best IMO, and that oboe in the intro is heartbreakingly gorgeous. And Gary's voice, like a fine wine, just kept getting better with age.

The last couple of bars will seem strange to outsiders not familiar with Danish culture. But they demonstrate how a piece of music needs to end to be acceptable by an audience with average age around 80 or more. It helps to know and be able to pronounce the expression "rødkål med fløde".

I loved Whiter Shade of Pale back in the sixties….but, full disclosure, I cannot say that I like this classical version.
Hey, back in the day we were rock and rollers! Nobody would be caught dead at a concert like that for super straight people taking themselves so seriously, and I think it’s lost a lot with all the pomposity. My best memories of the song is being totally lost in London in 1969, knowing no one and having no friends and waking up alone in some bedsit at 4 am thinking I just wanted to go back to California when out of the dark I heard this song, “Whiter Shade of Pale” so loud as if it were right next to me. The next day, I went to Italy. Returned to London and lived there ten years happily ever after.

The music alone is something special. Very original, it’s something someone showed me how to play as a youngster, I was probably 14 years old. It stuck with me because I loved that song, the soulful way the chords ebb and flow, the way they progress towards the pivot and then sours so soulful towards the climax in this song. You don’t really care what it’s about. I read an interview where he was asked what it is about. He talked about being at a party and writing this song of what he observed and heard in conversation at that gig they performed at.
I imagine those people were very well healed and the miller being an outsider got by on his wits and being able to spin a good yarn. The girl who talked about leaving for the coast was drinking on an empty stomach, turned pale then passed out, his descriptions are very poetic reflections and make idealistic compliments of the excesses of the upper class lifestyle.
Well this song was very popular as I remember, it played on the radio regularly, that chord progression is perfect for the organ, just outstanding the way it glides to poetically, it’s beautiful, an absolute original composition even though the chords in it are in a million songs before and after.

I’ve come to realize that this song is an allegory for the Bible. The waiter is Jesus turning water into wine, the ceiling is breaking through the firmament and reaching nirvana, the truth is right in front of you, we have eyes that we do not see, always keep loyal in your lamps to be a bride of Christ and so on. I don’t know if the younger gang realizes how many of these songs were about God and Jesus. Beautifully beautifully done. I loved your reaction.
