- In 1992 Billy Crystal directed his first movie, "Mr. Saturday Night," about an abrasive stand-up comic. Back then, Crystal required hours of makeup to play the 73-year-old washed-up comedian Buddy Young, Jr. Now, thirty years later, Crystal has turned the film into a Broadway musical - and the 74-year-old finally gets to act his age. Correspondent Tracy Smith sits down with the still-youthful Crystal.

As an actor myself, I SO identify here. You want to know you remain relevant and vital. Mr. Crystal shows the way. Bravo, sir.
In the audience for a preview performance last Wednesday. Billy is so hilarious, and the show is funny! Between the what seems like a never ending pandemic, and NYC having it's share of incidents lately, it felt so good to experience this, and laugh out loud.
He looks amazing and he's completely on the ball... Good for him
Billy Crystal is awesome actor and comedian. God bless him, for everything he does.
David Paymer is so underrated
LOVE him! A rare, HAPPY comedian.
I saw this movie when it came out and it made me cry because I could so identify with it. Just loved it! Hope the Broadway show works as well. Good luck, Billy Crystal!
Everytime I see Billy Crystal it takes me back to when he played Jody on SOAP. That was my first introduction to him.
Me too!!
You GO Billy!! LOVE that you are sharing all your talent all these years!! THANK YOU!
God Bless Billy Crystal, John from Jersey his #1 Fan
Billy Crystal is a national treasure. Protect him at all costs!

@@beatricewoods8377 And so much more............look on here for his Comic Relief bits with Whoopi & the Late, Great ROBIN.....
My wife and I saw “Mr. Saturday Night” in previews on Thursday, March 31 and it was great! We highly recommend it! Thanks for the laughs to the entire cast!
Billy, you are a class act ❤️❤️‼️
I was lucky enough to see this show in July. It is such a beautiful show, and the entire cast is absolutely brilliant!
The story is told with a lot of heart, and the music is performed with the utmost sincerity; it’s an absolute must see!
THESE ARE THE VERY BEST INTERVIEWS! I REALLY MEAN THEY ARE EXCELLENT! THE PERSON BEING INTERVIEWED REALLY SHINES!
Why are you YELLING?
His friend Robin Williams would be so proud.
Love Billy Crystal
Run, don't walk!!! Just came back from seeing this. This is a Musical Theater Comedy Master Class you don't want to miss!!! Billy stole the show!!! My cheek bones hurt from laughing so hard.
Billy Crystal was at my College Reunion!°
Nassau Community College!!! He was such a sweet man!!! Can't wait to experience Mr. Saturday Night on Broadway!!! I know I'll be laughing!!!!!!
What’s *NOT* to like about Billy Crystal. A most likable, lovable guy who always makes you smile. He’s a gift.
I can safely say that Billy Crystal is on the same level as Mel Brooks in terms of appeal across generations
One of my favorite comedians ever! Wish I could see this!!
David Palmer was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the movie.
David Paymer
Billy crystal finally aged , and now is inside and outside a esteemed icon.
He looks great. Love billy
Movie city slickers was so funny
Give it Up For The Legendary The one and only Mr. Billy CRYSTAAAAAAAL!!!!
Saw Mr Saturday Night the Musical the other day and it’s fantastic! You got to see it it’s amazing
What a wonderful, criminally underrated film. Emotionally wrenching, hilarious, and gorgeously shot. It's an equal crime that the stage show didn't get a longer run.
Was lucky enough to win the Mr. Saturday Night lottery for Sunday's July 10th show and also got front row seats. The show was amazing and funny and just the right length. The rest of the cast was also perfect for this thoroughly entertaining show. We're lucky to still have comedians like Billy Crystal performing and everyone that loves comedy should come out to see this show ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Stars
I've always thought this was such an underrated film. I'd love to see the show if, for no other reason, just to see how it works as a musical.
What a talent, love you dear Billy!
Billy is a legend
Saw it last week and loved it .
I would just about die seeing Billy Crystal on broadway!!!!!!! 😭 truly a dream!!!!!!
Well maybe it wasn’t as commercial as most of his other films. But Mr Sat Night is a great great movie. Billy is terrific. I love the movie. It works. The chemistry between him and David is just money.
I personally know he’s a great guy, just like his uncle ♥️
I got to see this musical and it was awesome. I made eye contact with billy himself!
Good for You Billy!!
Let us be the judge Billy; you always deliver & shine 👑🍀
Love you
No matter when I see Billy on screen or on stage, Mike Wasowski definetly comes to mind. Same with his co-star, John Goodman, as James P. “Sulley” Sullivan.
Chris Finch: "Put that thing back where it came from or so help me!"
He also has a wonderful voice...
I might have been nice to mention the fact that Jason Robert Brown has written the music.
Awesome
You have to ask: "What are the songs like? Will people be whistling them on their way home?" After all, it's a musical and if the tunes don't cut it then your musical has a short run. Good luck, Billy. I hope you've got that covered.
Wow, you must be an eminent Broadway producer. He should have consulted with you before taking this gamble. He probably didn’t know any of this.
@@davidj8658 Thanks for your sarcasm. It reminds me of the world we live in. Actually, my words are based on a few reviews (not favorable). I didn't actually want to say that the songs were lame. Others have already done that and are suggesting a major makeover while the show is still in previews. I'd like to see Billy with a winner.
Dude, Broadway songs usually suck. Listen to Bob Dylan and the like for something meaningful, not canned Broadway drivel!
@@lewstone5430 Your advice is welcome. Show tunes are meant for a certain venue (in the theater) and only a few of them make it beyond that into the general public. I have never been to a Broadway show and I know it has its rah-rah supporters. As for Dylan... I have several of his CDs and I like to hear Patti Smith cover his songs.
I believe in the old time religion of the funny man! May he always be with us!
I’m happy to know that somewhere, Tom Scharpling is watching this and laughing too. My only question is, when do we get a “Jazz Man” movie?
Well, I thought the movie was brilliant. Thank you Billy. I hope the B’way show was a success!
but his best musical performance will always be put that thing back where it came from or so help me
I was hoping for Billy Crystal and Bobby DeNiro to bring Analyze This to broadway, but I’ll take it.
74? Time flies!
Grossingers, Kutshers, The Concord. Anyone who grew up around the Borscht Belt and homemade kugel will understand.
The movie “Mr. Saturday Night” is thee most underrated movie ever.
With all due respect Mr. Crystal…you got it right the first time and the critics got it very wrong. Happy Pesach!
❣️
Tracy Smith has star power herself.
Billy can do NO WRONG. Kudos to him!
To me.this movie was great
noo.. he can't get old. MR. SATURDAY NIGHT IS EXCELLENT!!! I don't know why it tanked. Buddy Young Jr. needs to meet Bobby Bittman. lol.
I predict it closes pretty fast..not a good movie and your make it into a musical??? Makes perfect sense...
It’s a delightful show
Crystal Williams starring in Billy's Crystals. Bill E. Crisstall directing.
I thought it was a good movie, a good psychological study of the stand up comedian! Underneath all the comedy was a sadness! The comedy masking a hostility.
He has the coolest birthday. Ya me him Quincy Jones Steph Curry Michael Caine Albert Einstein
Is that Billy Crystal or Christopher Walken?
Just curious. Did Omar consummate her marriage with her brother? 🤣
I was in a car and at a party with him when he did “City Slickers” which I worked on.
He liked me but… Nice guy though.
The overbaked movie should translate better as a musical. Good luck Billy!
dont know why its only playing in new york and the worst seats in the house are 69 bucks you think he would want as many people as possible to see it but i guess not. i just lost a little respect for him
The main characters are Jewish. That's why it's staying in NYC.
Looks awful.
