I'm so glad I finally got to see this game. I had to work that day & listened to it on the radio. I never dreamed that 37 years later I'd be watching it.
AS a Lifer Cowboys fan in Philly...I have over 750 Cowboys games and the ONLY footage I had of this game was the NFL FILMS GOW and it was not even te entire half hour...I looked for this game for YEARS...now 4 years ago it turned up out of nowhere...Thank God I have this game now..last week I finally got the 1981 Cowboys at Cards, I now have the full season. The ONLY game I need, only two are: 1978 Cowboys @ Giants and 1978 MNF Cowboys at Redskns
I was at this game thanks to tickets from a vendor. It was just as exciting as it appears here. The fans were just nuts. It was the start of the Giants return to the glory of the 50's and early 60's.
This was my first game in person for the Giants on my 14th bday. We were lower level way back behind the goalposts where the winning kick flew through. Still remember how cold it was especially my feet in those old Herman Survivor work boots 😂 also remember everyone chanting let’s go Jets filing out of the stadium. What an awesome memory
I watched this entire game from start to finish with my Grandfather. My father had raised me a Jets fan, which is pretty much a form of child abuse. I can remember being a misguided 8 year old who loved the Dallas Cowboys at the time as well and was a big fan of Tony Dorsett. The Cowboys seemed to always be on national tv back then. Growing up in the late 70's and early 80s, there were plenty of young kids who followed both the Steelers and the Cowboys. The day of this game, my Grandfather became angry with me and yelled "you're not a Dallas fan, you're from New York, you're a Giants fan!" I said "OK Grandpa" and never rooted for the Cowboys again. I didn't understand the importance of this game all those years ago, but looking back, this is one of my favorite moments as a Giants fan. Thank you, and rest in peace, Grandpa. The irony is the Giants needed a Jet victory over Green Bay I believe the following day to secure the playoff spot.
This is the first GIANTS game that I ever went to. It was cold and windy that day, but I was 9 years old and there was a magical feeling in the building that day. It was the start of something special for us.
I remember watching this game and jumping up and down screaming when Danelo made that kick to win it. Watching it again gave me some major goose bumps.

Thanks for uploading this game. Was a U.S. Marine when I saw this game from my room in the barracks. The future was looking bright for the Giants and indeed it was. That was a day when the NFL had at least a shred of nobility about it and not just a Super Bowl halftime show or a conduit for politically correct Pablum puke. . . . like today.

@@shanetrimble9265 Don't get me wrong, the rest of the 80's through the 90's was good too. I was just commenting on what I consider, the greatest era for football. But football from 82-84 was definitely real football, unlike today. 👍
First thing I noticed is how intense this game was; the crowd noise, the hits, guys getting injured in the first half (Perry and Perkins carted off and vicious hit on Bright while fielding a punt). The two announcers - butter! I had never seen this game - wow! Thanks for posting 🙏.
Yes, the Giants had the best defense in the 1981-1990 period as a whole, but George Young and the scouts could never come up with a set of top-notch wide receivers, and not even one. On the other hand, many excellent offensive linemen, running backs, and tight ends. Smash-mouth football in the 1981-1991 period, Giants, Bears, Redskins, collectively besting the 49ers. These are beautiful memories and part of US history. Heartfelt thanks to those of you who recorded, archived, digitalized, and published these games.
Watchers this game at my Aunties house. I was a huge Steeler fan, but as a kid, me an my brother Mike would always pick a favorite team to root for. I picked the Cowboys. The Giants upset the great Cowboys 13-10. Thank you for the upload!!! I was only 8. Wow!!!
I was born on the day of this game, mom in labor and my dad tried to finish watching 👀 , I came in to the world as this game was on at 5:38. On my 40th birthday Cowboys beat the Giants December 19.
Wow, that is so cool that you came into the world on such a big turning point for the Giants!.. December 19 is my birthday too, this game was my 15th birthday. Cowboys lost on my birthday in playoffs in 76 to Rams. And SMU lost to Jim MacMahon and BYU in 1980 Holiday Bowl in epic BYU comeback on Dec 19 1980. I am a Cowboy and SmU fan, they both broke my heart many a birthday. I became a big Phil Simms fan, loved to watch him throw.
This was my first game on my 14th bday! Now anyone with a Dec 19th bday has to remember the Giants collapse against Eagles after leading by 21 in the 4th in 2010. This game was my greatest bday memory. The eagles loss my worst 😂
I was a freshman in High School at my Grandma's when I watched this game. I'll never forget Danelo's kick that won it! it is great to be able to watch this game again.
My very first game at the old Meadowlands; age 8 and 11/12ths. Mezzanine seats. It was absolutely frigid. Overtime win over the Cowboys to get us back into the post-season for the first time since '63. Joe Danelo tied it up with 30 seconds to go and then put the game away in overtime. I'd never heard a sound like that before. The feeling was electric. I was hooked. Watching the game again puts me right back there - thank you so much for posting!!!
I was a young boy watching this with my dad....it was the beginning of the new Giant era....I remember the jubilant celebration by my dad when Joey D pit it through....all those years of waiting
I remember this game well. In college and remember Danelo missing first OT field goal then getting another chance and game winner. Watched Jets destroy the Packers next day and Giants ended 18 year playoff drought.
I miss the old Saturday afternoon nat. televised games. The late game that day- Buffalo/Miami, winner-take-all for the AFC East. What a great doubleheader!
One reason they got rid of those December Saturday games was that they couldn't ensure good match-ups. They got lucky in 1981. But in 1980, the two final Saturday games involved teams that were out of playoff contention -- Jets at Miami and Bears at Tampa. The other reasons were that ratings are generally better on Sunday, and they wanted more flexibility to move games to Sunday Night Football when it became the marquee prime time package.
I was stationed in Ansbach, West Germany while in the Army, and saw this game in the NCO club on my kaserne- boy, what a roller coaster ride of emotions! There were probably more Giants rooters than Cowboys, and I was going at it bantering with them! What a game!
This was the revitalization of football in this area. The Gianta were 6-7 but gutted out 3 tough wins to win their first Wild Card and make the playoffs for the first time in 18 years. It would be their first winning season since 1972. The Jets destroyed Green Bay 28-3 and made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.
I love love the Cowbous road jerseys for sure. But this year was sad for me as a fan becsuse I loved those old blue jerseys. I was 10 years old when they switched to the dark blue. It would be so cool if they would for 1 game go back to their old road Blue jerseys for one game.
This game is one of my all-time favorite sporting events. And of course the next week. The G Men were once again relevant but remember it wasn’t until 1986 _ 87 when they won it all. They had some tough seasons between this season and winning it all. But this game was extremely vital. Beating the Iggles the next week was so so sweet.
This win did not officially clinch a playoff spot for the N.Y. Giants. It was about 24 hours later that the Giants were officially in the playoffs after the N.Y. Jets defeated Green Bay 28-3 to allow the Giants to clinch the 2nd and final NFC Wild-Card spot. Had the Packers won, they would've been in the playoffs.
Taylor has worked pretty great this one. Showed his clutch, good run stopping in the end of 4q, and then recovered fumble in the overtime (literally, took the ball away from Tony) and after that great pass rush (pressure, hurry) on QB, collaborated with INT of Hunt, which caused winning FG. Hunt, Martin, Jeter, Carson and the whole defense were great
I believe this was the last Giant home game coached by Ray Perkins before he left and accepted the Alabama job. Both Bill Belechick and Bill Parcells were two of his assistants. Pretty impressive coaching tree....
best giants page on you tube, i wish the 86 championship game was on here. you tube sucks it keeps taking it down when you post it. i had clips from it i put up in 2009 it was up until last year and they took it down smh
Thanks Justin. Yeah, for the life of me, I cannot get that '86 NFCC Game approved by UA-cam. I will keep on trying though. Glad you like the channel. Go Giants!
Have this game on a VHS tape. Taped it. After, the Giants beat the Eagles in the wild card game and then lost to the 49ers who beat the Cowboys in "The Catch" game.
The 49ers would've still had home field because they beat New Orleans the following day and had the tiebreaker as a result of the whoopin they put on the Cowboys earlier in the season.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 Dallas beats SF in Dallas in the NFC championship that year, if it was played in Texas. I have no doubt in my mind. That's all I'm saying
Giants wearing white at home to put Dallas in blue jerseys. Dallas redesigned blue jerseys that season to change their luck. Me I always liked their earlier blue jerseys. Rarely got to see them most prominently in Super Bowl V
I'm a Giant fan that leaves in Texas, but that blue Jersey thing was bolognese, Cowboys beat The Rams in the 79 championship wearing the blue's, since they used to wear white all the time they look different when they would wear the blues
Brian White yeah I don’t know. They didn’t wear them too often and the Super bowl V loss gave impetus to them being Jinxed. I personally thought they were nice jerseys and colors. But I think the cowboys felt they lost their mojo if they weren’t wearing the white jerseys.
Loved the old Cowboys Blues.. not a jinx! ..all of those big game Cowboy losses in their blues were on the road or in playoffs against very good teams.
This game was incredible. Never seen a crowd so intense. And the Giants were so amped. They beat the hell out of Danny Whjte and the Cowboys. When I watch these games these days, it does seem like the refs should have flagged the Giants more for roughing the passer. They always seemed to let them get away with a lot. But man, they were good!
This showed that the Giants weren't going to be a pushover anymore. Winning the wildcard the next week was a big big step for the Giants going in the right direction. They did stumble in 82 and 83, but got back on in 84.
As great as Tony Dorsett was, he never won an NFL rushing title. He came into this game leading the league with 1,607 yards and a 5.0 average in 15 games. '81 was his best year statistically. Many people including myself thought Dorsett was the best running back in the NFL in 1981 and 1982.
Lawrence Taylor change the culture of the Team when he came to the team, I pissed when they referred to Ladamian Tomlinson as LT, there is only one LT and were #56 for The New York Giants, Tomlinson was good but he never delivered no championships for The Chargers or The Jets
Funny how after the Cowboys "Blue jersey jinx" came into fruition, all of the teams in the division started wearing white at home to force the Cowboys to wear blue. I guess any type of edge you could get.
Oh hell, just finished watching. They lost LOL. Figures. There are way more games uploaded on UA-cam of Cowboy losses than wins. No surprising. Good game anyway
Yep and of all the NFC East rivals, I have always respected the Giants probably due to I was always a Parcells and Bellichick fan. Can't stand the Redskins or Eagles. One of my favorite games to watch that I at one time had on VHS for the longest is the 1990 NFC Championship vs the 49ers. That game was one of the best coached games that I have ever watched. After they won that game, I knew they would go on to beat the Bills in the Super Bowl.
@@paulsonj72 '81 was Parcells' first year as DC. In '79, new HC Perkins hired him to coach the LBs, but Parcells, after initially accepting the position, had to decline for family reasons. He took '79 off while living in Colorado. In 1980, he accepted the position of LBs coach in New England, and following that season, Perkins lured him back to NY with the offer of being DC. And the rest is history...
This game set up the next day with Packers-Jets, which would prove to be the single biggest NFL game in New York proper of all time and the biggest involving a New York team since Super Bowl III as the Jets had to win that game just to assure them AND the Giants of making the playoffs.
Ken Gelman - Awesome, the next day I was standing next to Joe Danelo at Sacred Heart church in Lyndhurst. The parishioners applauded him after the mass was over.
@@michaeljordan6008 that's awesome! I'll never forget chanting "Let's Go Jets!" walking down the spirals after the game. We needed them to beat the Packers the next day at Shea and they did. Great memories.
This is how my E.F.L Giants looked when they beat one of my childhood friends E.F.L Cowboys Eddie in the 80's in our League the E.F.L they didn't have the old ugly gray pants and The N.Y. on the side of the helmet like they do today, I wish they would go back to the days of Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson and Andy Headen when they wore the white on white and the words Giants on the side of the helmets
Those nice dark blue unis the Cowboys had, Giants needed a win; Ray Perkins was their coach that time. Giants, Packers, Seahawks, and Jets were last place teams that time.
First NFL game I've ever been at. Paid a scalper $50 for second-tier front row end zone seats. Saw Danelo kick us into the playoffs. He really wasn't that good, but kickers have come a long way.
Great game. Thanks for posting, Ken. Any chance you can post the 1981 Monday Night finale...Raiders vs. Chargers? 1981's final weekend had so much going on .
They have lost many big games in the White jerseys like the one 3 weeks later the NFC Championship Game to the 49ers with Dwight Clark and the Catch 28-27
I know.. more than anything those blue jerseys were road games. When they lost the '80 championship game Schram decided to change the blue jersey in '81
Interesting scenario would've been had COWBOYS-GIANTS game end in a tie PACKERS & 49ERS would've loss both COWBOYS & GIANTS would've gotten what they accompanied GIANTS a playoff berth & COWBOYS Home Field Advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs
This Cowboys loss still bothers me after all these years. Very cold Saturday Day afternoon game. The Jets were playing the Packers the next day to also attempt to earn a playoff birth. The Jets would beat the Packers and also earn a playoff spot along with the Giants.
@helpisontheway9405 Danny White was an underappreciated and underrated QB. His own crime was not playing a NFC Championship game at home. Otherwise, he would be a SB winner. As for the current NFL, the product is weak. Very poor. All passing , no rushing and flags being thrown after every other play.
@helpisontheway9405 I sort of blame Steve Spurrier for the demise of the current day NFL he brought that wide open spread offense from college to the NFL. The Oilers K Gun offense and the Chargers 1980s offense were different and required skilled players. Nowadays, it's a joke. No more running backs, no more full backs and now consists of QB's who run all day and end up injury prone. It resembles the arena league
For a generation of Giant fans, this was the first of many memorable games.

Agree!
thank you Ken Gelman!
Joe Danelo keeps the Cowboys in the game.
It was so cold you could feel it through the TV almost
This showed that the Giants weren't going to be a pushover anymore. Winning the wildcard the next week was a big big step for the Giants going in the right direction. They did stumble in 82 and 83, but got back on in 84.
I remember watching this game, I was 13, and it was the first time since I started watching football in 1974, that I saw The Giants beat The Cowboys
I was at that game
As a chi fan I really enjoyed pat’s announcing but boy he sure was a homer for both of these teams
YES, Only One L T The Real LT
Funny how after the Cowboys "Blue jersey jinx" came into fruition, all of the teams in the division started wearing white at home to force the Cowboys to wear blue. I guess any type of edge you could get.
Ha, agreed. I believe the Cardinals were the first ones to try that a few years earlier. Then as you said, many teams followed suit.
I loved the old royal blue jerseys. I wish they would wear those as throwbacks today.
Oh hell, just finished watching. They lost LOL. Figures. There are way more games uploaded on UA-cam of Cowboy losses than wins. No surprising. Good game anyway
Ha .Thanks for watching, Clay. The 'Boys have plenty of classic wins too. Great franchise. On this day however, the Giants squeaked on by.
Was Parcells the D Coordinator? This D is GREAT!!!
I think he was in his 2nd year as the defensive coordinator
@@paulsonj72 '81 was Parcells' first year as DC. In '79, new HC Perkins hired him to coach the LBs, but Parcells, after initially accepting the position, had to decline for family reasons. He took '79 off while living in Colorado. In 1980, he accepted the position of LBs coach in New England, and following that season, Perkins lured him back to NY with the offer of being DC. And the rest is history...
Cold weather games were not Tony Dorsett's forte'.
This game set up the next day with Packers-Jets, which would prove to be the single biggest NFL game in New York proper of all time and the biggest involving a New York team since Super Bowl III as the Jets had to win that game just to assure them AND the Giants of making the playoffs.
Adding: That Packers-Jets game turned out to be the last regular season NFL game Vin Scully ever called.
Tully's then TV partner Hank Steam did the Cowboys/Giants game on CBS Radio with Jack Buck.
The Giants had the best defense in the 80s hands down.
Probably right. Except 1985 Bears and the 1983 Raiders defense is a little underrated.
Sitting in the mezzanine in section 223.
I was in section 319.
Ken Gelman - Thanks for posting. I really miss those days.
@@michaeljordan6008 my pleasure. I enjoy interacting with fellow Giants fans like you. Thanks for commenting.
1ST TIME I'VE SEEN THIS ONE..GUESS WHO THE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR IS? YEP, BILL PARCELLS, FUTURE HEAD COACH..AND SB CHAMP..
Great classic football.Juan bx n.y.
So weird seeing the Starting quarterback punting
tough, tough battle
Those nice dark blue unis the Cowboys had, Giants needed a win; Ray Perkins was their coach that time. Giants, Packers, Seahawks, and Jets were last place teams that time.
Joe danelo is the luckiest man that he got away with terrible kicking.
First NFL game I've ever been at. Paid a scalper $50 for second-tier front row end zone seats. Saw Danelo kick us into the playoffs. He really wasn't that good, but kickers have come a long way.
This channel is awesome! Ken, any chance you have week 2 of 2000 Giants vs Eagles?
Thanks Robert. I'll have to look for that game. I don't think I have it off-hand.
The real Giants
Scott Brunner, a Delaware Blue Hen. need I say more?...Anyone notice the lack of NFL team apparel in the stands?
John Madden is the greatest, but didnt have to explain EVERYTHING !!!!!!!
Notice how the football players are allowed to take a hit back then?
Does anybody have the 1981 game of the Packers @ Jets week 16? The Jet victory puts the Giants in the playoffs.
ua-cam.com/video/HQRaS-_nbt4/v-deo.html
They cheered for hours after they beat my Cowboys
Danelo had the yips
Great game. Thanks for posting, Ken. Any chance you can post the 1981 Monday Night finale...Raiders vs. Chargers? 1981's final weekend had so much going on .
As a Cowboys fan even to this day I hate our blue jerseys... it was such a jinx..
They have lost many big games in the White jerseys like the one 3 weeks later the NFC Championship Game to the 49ers with Dwight Clark and the Catch 28-27
I know.. more than anything those blue jerseys were road games. When they lost the '80 championship game Schram decided to change the blue jersey in '81
Empty sidelines without a thousand photographers and unimportant people thinking their important
Love summeralls nothing doing n almost broke it
Lawrence Taylors rookie season
The new Cowboys blue jerseys
doorset must have had bet on this game.
Was Phil Sims injured during this game .
This Cowboys loss still bothers me after all these years.
Very cold Saturday Day afternoon game. The Jets were playing the Packers the next day to also attempt to earn a playoff birth. The Jets would beat the Packers and also earn a playoff spot along with the Giants.
Thank you for sharing that memory.
@@caetanolozano6486 My pleasure. Appreciate it.
@helpisontheway9405 Still made it to the NFC Championship game. Took a Dwight Clark miracle to beat them.
