It seems that Stephenson has a knack for disguising the themes of his books. I've only read SNOW CRASH so far, but it's the same here … it starts out as one of the most influental cyberpunk classics with a Street Samurai, but in reality, it's a deep analysis about the effects of language and religion, which both can be seen as some kind of virus. And ironically … those very scientific elaborations were almost more thrilling than the action scenes …
I'm currently filling my new bookshelves up. And been looking into Neal Stephenson. Never actually read anything by him but thanks for this, I'm intrigued 🤘
I am about to start this book soon, on my nightstand! I peeked at the first page and felt like a kid in a candy store! Josh at Red Fury books mentioned he plan to read the Baroque Cycle so I took Quicksilver out from the library since you also recommended these books in several “ lists” videos. I take this review posted today as a big sign from the book gods!!
You did alright. My college professor pronounced Samuel Pepys as "Peeps." No idea if that is correct or not. (As I recall Pepys was one of the better, more interesting, writers in my English Lit courses.) As for Neal Stephenson, I've only read his Anathem, which I thought was middling at best. I don't get the hype over it. I do have a copy of Reamde and hope to get to that this year. (I'm a big WoW player and so that books sounds fun to me.)
How similar is the writing of these to Cryptonomicon? I wasn’t big on Stephenson’s writing style in that one, but the premise of the Baroque Cycle sounds interesting. And I hear that the characters in it are related to characters in Cryptonomicon like Bobby and Amy Shaftoe, and Lawrence and Randy Waterhouse.
Like the review. Only suggestion- tell us if the rest of the series is just as good (i hope so) or slows down in middle. Is there pacing problems? Also should we read cryptonicon first or can we read it after??? Thanks for reviews!!!!
If you’re thinking of reading this series, pay attention to Brian’s reading of the inside cover. That is what you need to know. It is not overly difficult and endlessly educational and fascinating.
Own them but have not read them yet. Loved Snow Crash though! We watch your reviews even though we may not read the book, yes you are that entertaining or we are that easily entertained. 🤔
Good job keeping it spoiler free! Let me reiterate that it is absolutely kick ass.
Great job! The raiders shirt matches the book cover!

I envy you the opportunity to read this series for the first time. My favourite of my last half-century of reading.
And Brian - it’s Eliza.

You made me want to read those books, so you did very well, I guess 😄
Great review, sounds like an extremely challenging book to read.
Thanks for the review! This is a priority read for me in 2024.

Seveneves is chilling in my TBR pile :P I really need to get around to reading him. :P

Brian lee durfee can read 100 pages an hour I can only read 150 pqges a day. whats his secret.
Do you ever take notes or highlight or put in stickers when you read? Someone who inhales 20 books a month is unlikely to be a moron.
good review im reading ReaMdE right now but crypto and this trilogy are on 2024 TBR
