    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In a dream sequence, Nina's (Natalie Portman) dangerous obsessions of perfection manifest in the form of the demonic Black Swan.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company (Mila Kunis). A Fox Searchlight Pictures release by visionary director Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER), BLACK SWAN takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect. BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter,s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. -

For anyone who is not familiar with the ballet, Swan Lake:
This is the prologue/introduction where we see Odette running through the forest all happy and what not. Just then a man appears all mysterious and cunning. He then turns into a monstrous wizard and Odette tries to run away but it was too late. The wizard had turned her into a swan.
You gotta give props to the filmmakers for making this the beginning as it is in all the Swan Lake productions. This isn’t necessarily a nightmare Natalie’s character had. This was her dreaming of playing the part of Odette. Look up American Ballet Theater’s version.

I don't remeber anymore which company played in Portugal in 2015. But this was not the opening scene. :( It started with a party at the Prince's castle. The joker character made most of the ballet stunts. After this, the Prince leaves the party and finds the swan princess in the forest. I wish I could have seen this as the opening scene.

Natalie''s hand work is amazing. You can tell which is the double and which is Natalie. They should have given her "double" credit on the film, mentioned her at the Oscars, that does not take away however from the amount of training Natalie did for this film. Great job and amazing shots.

    • @intrusive-th0t

The dance double got about as much credit as a stunt double because that is functionally all she was. She did the more complicated pointe work but at the end of the day she isn’t an actress and Natalie did appear en pointe. Nobody gets this upset about Tom Cruise’s stunt double for his fight scenes in his movies not getting credit so I’m not sure why the ballet community thinks dance doubles would be treated any differently.

"I had my editor count shots. There are 139 dance shots in the film. 111 are Natalie Portman untouched. 28 are her dance double Sarah Lane. If you do the math, that's 80% Natalie Portman. What about duration? The shots that feature the double are wide shots and rarely play for longer than one second. There are two complicated longer dance sequences that we used face replacement. Even so, if we were judging by time, over 90% would be Natalie Portman. And to be clear, Natalie did dance on pointe in pointe shoes. If you look at the final shot of the opening prologue, which lasts 85 seconds, and was danced completely by Natalie, she exits the scene on pointe. That is completely her without any digital magic. I am responding to this to put this to rest and to defend my actor. Natalie sweated long and hard to deliver a great physical and emotional performance. And I don't want anyone to think that's not her they are watching. It is." - *Darren Aronofsky, Director of Black Swan*

So what? Sarah Lane sweated even more. I would go on and say if Sarah acted the whole thing she would be just as good as Natalie, if not better. Natalie is just lucky they chose her to be the actress. Ballet dancers are actors too they act without speech, they act with only emotions. As a ballet dancer Sarah must been acting since she started dancing variations.

@@shinemendwoor dude, you talk like actors don't go through a vigorous regime. Sarah's job here, is to be a stunt double, that's it. she isn't asked to be an actress, that's Natalie's job and that's why it's a movie she won an Oscar for. You don't expect her to learn the minutia of ballet in a year do you? Besides, that is not her job, she's done her job well, and gotten an Oscar for it. They aren't going to hire a ballet dancer for an acting job, the same way they wouldn't hire an actor for a professional ballet performance.

@@m.v.129 the movie is about the black swan! Do you know what the movie meant? But as I analyze, BTS is preparing for it's end just like the black swan did after all she's gone through. It's a simple symbolism. Fans will go watch this film not for the appreciation it deserves but for the group they worship to.

~ That sure as LL getout IS Natalie dancing -AND EMOTING. Yes, I am sincerely taken in by her EN POINTE dancing (she was dancing ballet before she was acting) but the Riveting thing about the scene is in her face and actions. She is not only Dancing, trusting to fall into another dancers arms, being buffeted about, trying to get away -en pointe, which is the point , running for her life, obviously terrified of -Something, confusion , etc, -but she is Scared. There is a malevolence sneaking up on her and has a hold of her, enough to have left it’s mark on her Psyche. Sarah Lane, Anyone? I honestly wonder if Merle Streep’s hands would be as emotive.

Actually, they don't. I've seen many documentaries and read many articles in which the state that the only time the use a second ballerina for the role of the white/black swan is during the ball when the white swan appears at the window after the prince declares, unknowingly, his love for the black swan.

not exactly. if the ballet is performed every night for several days the part is played by different principal dancers on different nights. because it require so much time on pointe per performance it would be hard for same person to do it each night, so they get night or two off between dancing it.

    • @vtrly7422

+James Galante she did train but to be honest it's not her, it takes 2-3 year for a child to go on pointe and 6 years for an adult. Training for that long is nothing trust me she probably just increased her flexibility a lot more. If that was her and only train for so little time she probably would get seriously injured ballet is extremely dangerous and it defiantly takes years for perfection. So just telling you NO! It was a professional. Also I have nothing against Natalie she's an actor not a dancer and I completely understand that I'm just telling you
