A pencil sharpener is a useful item to add, you can use it to make some fine tinder especially if the twigs are wet on the outside.

i have two lol, a normal one and oversized kids pencil sharpener, so you can use it with thicker twigs, it creates a lot more tinder for the same effort.

I use the large ones for sharpening those carpenter pencils.

I recommend getting the magnesium ones. I personally tested it, and the shavings will ignite when scrapped off (sort of like the DOAN Magnesium Bar). So it makes tinder and IS tinder. The brand I got was the KUM brand via Amazon.

The only thing I'm lacking is char cloth. Everything else I've got and used to good effect. I've made hot water for instant coffee using Tea Candles + Votive Candles during power outages in hurricanes. Last year ('21) I went through Hurricane Ida and was without power for two weeks. Kinda like being back in the military... Excellent video. It never hurts, ever, to go back and review the basics !

Excellent video. If anyone has "expired" hand sanitizer, don't throw it away. I dug up an old one from my kit bag that still had enough of an alcohol content to take a flame.

Great kit. The only thing I might add is a Spark-Lite one handed striker (either the cheap military plastic ones or the cool brass ones).
You can’t always assume you’ll have two good hands in an emergency, due to injury or frostbite (or extreme shakes from hypothermia). They’re great and super easy with one hand, and super compact/lightweight.
Also, as much as I love camo… my personal fire-kit bag and the tools in it are all orange/bright (where possible), in case I drop them in foliage.

That's a very good point you make. And people should practice operating "one handed/weak handed" for just such a contingency. We had to do that on occasion in the military (U S.) I have a fire kit in each (2) of my bags and they're in white plastic, water resistant containers that serve dual purposes - water collection and storage

I keep chips and shavings from any woodwork I do, soaked in old chip oil, wax or vaseline and then sealed in little zippit bags, trick birthday candles are handy and small and I keep my waxing cloths, cut into small strips and sealed in zippits.
    Always been a firebug haha!

Here's one I like to carry find a down pine tree cut into it looking for fat wood take home a piece about 4 to 5 inches round and drill into the fat wood not the bark make sure you put down some paper to catch the small pieces put as many holes in it without touching each other use a 1/2 inch drill bit then put all your shaving into an air tight container. Now cut that log about 1 inch thick and use them also to start your fire

Great video. Thank you. You can also use the clipper as a spark maker when the fuel is gone. Better than the bic.

  • @Isheian
    @Isheian 3 місяці тому

My issue with the clipper is the spark wheel snapped in my pocket with all three I’ve bought.
Only issue with Vaseline and cotton balls is they freeze. If you’re going camping near freezing you may want the wax cotton rounds instead.
If you tear the duct tape into really thin strips it’ll light with the ferro rod, and if you roll it into a tube it makes a long lasting tinder. Gorilla tape works amazing in both forms.

  • @jasonedwardledburynewzeala9897

I got 2 x 6" x 1/2" ferro rods recently for $28.00 nzd delivered. Great rods great price. I recommend them. Most ferro rods if used with a HSS WORK GREAT. 🪁🤘💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯 celluloid guitar picks.fresnel lense. Fatwood. Pencil sharpener. Bike inner chube is fantastic.😅 small light in case if use at night. 😊👍

Just found your channel. Very good kit! Looks very similar to mine. All the essentials. I also carry a flint and steel when I feel like playing around and a fire is not urgent. And yes,Clipper lighters are great, and they are refillable as opposed to the Bic.

For me those wood chips and a ferrocerium rod, with a backup lighter. I often find the rod easier to use as you put the sparks onto it material rather than lifting it up.

Great kit - magnifying lense would make it a little better but I don’t know if the sun shines enough in the UK to warrant the extra weight.

If you go in asda on the cig counter they have some sort of pipe lighter, it looks like a normal lighter but has a 2 inch tube that the flame comes out the top of, so your fingers and thumb are well away from the flame and whatever you are lighting, plus great for getting the flame into things like fire boxes so you have some wind cover.

I prefer the clipper over a bic. Clipper is refillable and the flint is replaceable. If the clipper tank leaks, you can remove the entire striker assembly and use it separately.

Another really good video Bud. Fire kits excellent topic and one of "hot" debate between bush crafters ! Sorry about the naff pun ! Best fire kits are what you have used, you know works for you and are easily maintained. Keep them simple I find works for me, and as for make your own tinder, loads of ideas that don't cost the earth out there. Waxed Jute twine, the cotton bud and vas, wax pads, char-cloth and loads more besides these. Look forward to you doing the "How to make vid" for some of them. Excellent info for the Newbees. Keep the vids coming mate I really enjoy the work. Thumbs up from the south coast.

My wife has a sensei and every time we go to change out the wax by just dip my cotton balls in it and let them cool and throw them in a Ziploc baggie I have half of a gallon Ziploc baggy full and I've tested at least 20 of them time them each and they burn anywhere from 8 to 10 minutes

Vaseline and cotton balls will never enter my kit because I do not like how messy that mix is. I made a home made version of fire plugs and that has become a favorite of mine (Next to wax paper).

I hike a lot but im not sure why the need for so many types of fire starter. Its just extra weight and space. I realize how important a fire is but carrying one or maybe two tried and tested methods will suffice. Im not critizing the video tho. Just an opinion✌️

My Fire Kit consist of a pair of Reading Glasses for Solar Ignition, and a Key Ring Liquid Match, which gives me both a Spark Ignition Source with the Ferrocerium striker, and flame ignition with a wide variety of common fuels. 3 independent sources of ignition with two common items.
