I remember this match. Mary Joe was really taking it to Venus' forehand (which was the weaker side). In addition, she played good defense in the beginning of the match. Her fall really turned things around and Venus got herself together to switch the momentum to her side.
I remember watching this match. MJ was playing so well. I forgot how pinpoint accurate her strokes were and how well she changed the direction of the ball. The fall was so unfortunate. I think Venus probably would have come back and won the match, but it would have been competitive. MJ was completely different after the fall. I may be misremembering, but I think it rained during the match which made the court slippery. They should have stopped play.
MJ was dominating completely before the fall. It was an incredible match from her end and I think she had a very good chance of winning it. She couldn’t push off or run well at all after the fall. It was a bad injury and credit to MJ, she should have withdrew from the match but she finished it albeit it was a formality. I remember the commentators clearly saying how unfortunate it was for MJ as she was playing incredible tennis. After the fall she could barely win games. Sadly for her, her career didn’t really last much longer and this was one of her last solid results.
Mary Joe had a very good technique, she had all to become a number 1, but she lacked the will to do it. However, when she was in fire it was a joy to see her precise flat runing hits
She never had what it takes to be number one. She got as highest number four and that's fantastic but there is a huge difference between the number four and the number one player in the world.
Her game was way too mechanical - she was one described as playing "polite tennis" which I think is a good description. Add to that how physically frail she was, with regular injuries, and she never had a chance of being #1.
Girl! Mj’s forehand is not talked about much !!! Omg no shade Sloane has this same forehand ! It’s so well controlled and powerful!!!! And both mj and sloane are both great clay court players! (U.s. women don’t get enough clay court credit!
MJ played Venus hard that first set like she had something to prove. But where was that fight earlier in her career playing Graf and Seles in Grand Slam finals?!?! Like 2 different players lololol
@@raymondlewis3527 Yeah I think Venus still comes back to win the match, she was already up in the 2nd and starting to play better. Still it would have been nice to see the match play out to the end without Mary Joe falling. She was almost immobile by the 3rd set.
@@dagman3651 Mary Jo didn't entirely lack power. She could hit her forehand really well especialy. Her problem was willingly being agressive enough, she had such a conservative mindset all her coaches tried to get her out of.
@@nathangraham1760 She was already doing it in '99. She commented on Serena's big win against Steffi Graf at Indian Wells and a couple of weeks later rooted her at the French Open.
Physically she was extremely thin and frail is actually a pretty good descriptor. She had countless injuries throughout her career and a slight upper body.

Yeh but Mary strongest forehand ball is still weaker that Venus’ weakest forehand ball.
So good!!

Venus didn’t celebrate when she won and she was nice at the net. She knew she was in trouble without that fall. But unfortunately a win is a win.
It's such a shame Fernandez took that fall because the match was right in her hands
Changed the match completely didnt it, unfortunate for Fernandez as she was playing well here
It is such a shame that Mary Jo fell but Venus started making less errors in the second set. That is how she broke Mary's serve before the fall.

Mary joe always looked frail
Maybe she just looked like a girl rather than a bouncer.
@@ipiap well yes but a frail girl…remember they are world athletes not a sex or gender parade!
@@rattata30 I would not call her frail. She is not a terminator, yet she showed some strong tennis, here against a real powerhouse.
