    IMO patina is a euphemistic word used by vintage watch dealers to inflate the price of old damaged watches!

    I agree that most "patina" in watches is damage that people try to romanticize. However, I don't think that most Faux Patina tries to mimic damage, if it did, it would not be attractive at all. In that sense, I think that the Longines that tries to replicate a damaged dial is really more miss than hit. The faux patina lume is fine IMHO. To me it is more of a different colour scheme or accent than an actual recreation of patina. Brown/beige lume looks nice.

  • @snowrabbit655
    @snowrabbit655 4 роки тому +8

    Regarding colored lume : what is hillarious is how just about the whole world claims a new watch with non-white lume has 'faux' patina. These vintage watches did not start their lives with white lume. Modern watches (since the start of superluminova) have it mostly wrong.There are enough vintage adverts and historic pictures, all in color, that clearly show that a lot of vintage watches began their lives with the same / similar colors to what people now call 'faux'. A lot of NOS tritium safe queens have not changed in color. And knowing that the dial makers for these watches (the dial makers are the guys who also lumed the dials) made dials for other (often competing) brands too, no doubt using the exact same materials...means it spans brands. To call something 'faux patina' requires putting a reissued watch into historical context...which was never necessarily white to begin with.

    I think we have seen the decade of fauxtina and we are at the end of it. It was a real crime and im happy to see it go. I would compare it to the Victorians who reproduced medival weaponry for their dining room walls which would not have been able to withstand a single fight. It was a crappy idea to start with and did not survive the Victorian age.

    I think faux patina indices are ok and I view them as just another color choice, which can make the watch more interesting, yes, vintage looking but it can also allow for better strap pairing.

      It's a romantic thought, the only problem being that modern lume will not patina with age. See fratellowatches article 'Will Super-LumiNova Discolor When It Ages?'

      Thanks as always for the comment, man. I'm riding the fence... the Faux aesthetic can be really cool on some watches (cheaper pieces) but when they get ludicrously priced, that's when you start questioning things haha!

    It's a very good video and it allows me to think about more sides of the situation than two.
    The new 321 is the only watch with faux patina that rubs me the wrong way. After thousands of dollars you're still not getting that "brand new watch" experience.
    Thanks for the video!
    Good luck on your watch journey!

  • @OBWAT

    I don't think the lume used on the new speedmaster 321 ed white should be described as 'faux patina'. The original tritium lume of the 1960s/70s had a creamy/beige colour on application. Hence the 2020 re-edition remains true to the original colour temperature, albeit using super-luminova. Considering that super-luminova does not patina, I think omega was right to match the original lume colour

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  4 роки тому

      Nicely said Obwat. I think some watches do work well with the effect (and since this does mirror the original Ed White, more power to them) But some watches are overdoing it excessively (the new Bond Seamaster is just Patina on top of Patina haha!)

    I love the aesthetic look of patina (aging). The mould effects on lume ranging from fading to spider web cracking can have such nice character. Some faded bezels can also look great.
    I enjoy the Fauxtina look that has been popularised over recent years. Although, I find that some models have a colour tone that is a bit too deep, looking unrealistic and a bit off putting.
    Yet another great video here brother. ✊

    Personally, I liken a new watch with faux patina similar to an artist beginning a painting with less than a blank canvas. I want my watch to age as I age. In 20-30 years I want my watch to reflect my experiences and my handiwork, not someone else’s. That is the beauty and art of a watch with authentic patina.

  • @matthewrikihana6818
    @matthewrikihana6818 4 роки тому

    The jeans analogy is accurate. As Levis replicates wear on new jeans to meet customer demands so the current trend in watches is met by watch brands. However, it is only a sub-trend of the reissued old models. Therefore, modern durable materials which don't gain patina in modern models should see off this trend in higher end brands. Homage brands will hang on for longer into the new decade.
    Personally, a reissue at multiples of the original price is the worst kind of homage (Seiko I'm talking to you here). Better a good homage at a price matched to the original (6105 for eg).
    Excellent vid as always.

  • @gpearce11

    Patina, by definition, is damage, and I therefore don’t think obvious patina (such as the paint flecked dial on that Longines) has a place in watches. Also, “pre-patinaing” a watch is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen.
    That said, “fauxtina” lume gets more way more hate than it deserves. In the same way that brown dials have become popular because, thanks to faded tropical dials, people realised they liked to aesthetic of brown dials. Likewise, we should stop considering coloured lume as “fauxtina”, and instead consider it for what it is; simply a different colour of lume. Many like the aesthetic of custard coloured lume instead of the standard stark white, so there should be nothing wrong with using it.
    Also, your example of denim jeans isn’t exactly accurate anymore. Modern modern watches can’t patina to nearly the same level that older watches did; ceramic bezels can’t fade or scuff, modern lume doesn’t fade anymore (making true patina lume impossible), and most dials are much more resistant to fading. If you like the look of patina on watch, you can’t just buy one and wait anymore.

    • @harisjoker6383
      @harisjoker6383 3 роки тому

      I agree man. With these new elements we would not or may never say that aging like we see on vintage pieces. Superluminova may not age as tritium lumes involving the dial with it.

    I don't hate it as a lot of people do,but I think the unfortunate consequence is these original radium/tritium pieces become a little less special/unique and a conversation piece when people see them, for alot of casual folk they now look the same as what's on the shelf and I find that a slight shame.

    The favourite watch in my collection is my IWC Mark XVI. It is the epitome of what a black and white watch should be. However that stark contrast can almost be harsh. Duh, it is a pilot's watch after all. If the indeces were a creamier colour, it would be more mellow to the eye. And that's just it, faux-patina is okay when it is simply another color. It seems insane to stigmatize a colour option when the colour is desirable.

    Here’s the way I treat a watch with a prefaded bezel and obvious faux patina: Like a trendy outfit, don’t spend a king’s ransom for it. I have a feeling that faux patina will go the way of preripped black ribbed skinny jeans, and fall out of fashion within the next few years. The difference between mechanical watches and a fast fashion outfit is the former is made to last, whereas the latter isn’t. Buying a mechanical watch with trendy aesthetics feels like you’re undervaluing its longevity, and if it’s an extremely expensive watch, then you’re basically spending Saville Row suit money for a trendy suit with a short fashion lifespan. If I wanted Faux Patina and a prefaded bezel, then I would spend Timex Q, Invicta or Vincero money for it, not multiples of thousands. Rolex watches have great resale value for a number of reasons, and one of them is the trend-resisting longevity of their designs. You could buy a Submariner in 2000, and its design will still look just as fresh 20 years to this day. Great analysis, IDGUY.

    • @Ossory88

      I dont really agree. Only because there is quartz and digital watches, that doesnt mean the mechanical watch is just a nod to the past. Mechanical watches have a few upsides to the more accurate electronic brethren. During nuclear fallout or other emp shocks, the mechanical watch still runs. Small advantage, granted, but it sure has that.

    I don't mind the "old radium" style lume. I don't see it as faux patina, but as an interesting, beautifully warm-ish colour. Heck, I just bought a watch that has it. However: I wouldn't have bought the watch if it had still also come with a faded/greyish-black dial. I had one of those (Steinhart Vintage/Rolex Big Crown homage) in my hand and the combination of the patina-lume and the "faded" dial was just too much and felt ... forced (for lack of a better word). The watch itself is beautiful and I would've bought it over the OVM - if it had come with a black dial.
    What's even worse are those watches that are scratched or even dirtied up and put on manky-looking leather straps at the factory (the Laco Erbstück-line comes to mind). Ugh!
    The way I see it, it's a bit like with denim/jeans. A bit of ageing can look very good and compliment the jeans (bit of pre-washing or very light stone-washing) ... but once they overdo the colour-fade or start putting cuts/rips into a brand new piece of clothing, that's when they lose me. After all: I want to be the one who puts those little imperfections on the object through regular use/wear.
    EDIT: I really shouldn't comment before watching the video all the way through. If I had, I would've come up with a different analogy than the denim-one ;)

Look at the new speedmaster 821...omega turned a watch that could have been a true serious competitor to the Daytona, bringing heritage to the future of the model.... and instead made it a caricature of a watch made decades ago. It’s unnecessary. The romance of patina lies in the life the watch has lived. Imitating it is not stylish, it’s pretending. Patina is vintage style. Faux patina is fad of imitation.
