DIY $30 Cell phone SMS text remote car starter add-on using a CL1-GSM relay controller

  • I added a CL1-GSM to my Excalibur RS-260-EDP v2.0 remote starter and used a Hologram 2G GSM SIM card (runs through T-Mobile which is the only 2G GSM provider left in the US and the CL1 ONLY runs off 2G GSM). Verizon, ATT, Tracfone, etc will NOT work.
I also used the Tasker app and AutoVoice app to start my car with my cell phone and OK Google. Tasker is only necessary to make the start procedure a lot easier by pushing an icon button you create rather than texting the code string to the CL1 every time. AutoVoice is only necessary if you want to use "OK Google" to start it.
Hologram 2G GSM SIM card was free with $5 shipping. You need to pay Hologram $1 per month for a phone number to be associated with the SIM.
Incoming texts are free (to start the car) and outgoing texts are $0.20 each which would provide confirmation that the "Start" command was received. But I'm not using the confirmation text. So for around $105 total (starter included and self installed) and $12 per year, that's about the cheapest way you're going to use a cell phone to start your car. It's pretty basic, but you could do the same thing like a lot of people are with an Arduino if you know how to program it. I didn't need anything fancy so this is the route I took.

Nice, I just got one of these and I'm trying to use a ting 2g gsm card. did yours just work right away when you put the sim in or did you have to do some kind of setup (for the sim part)?

The Sim card I used was different. Had to give it a number on their website. Other than that all I did was put the card in and all was good

@GWD LABS I couldn't afford the price of a 3G or 4G controller lol. I didn't want to waste a bunch of money if this actually didn't work. The only issue I'm now noticing is that for some reason, the CL1 is sending a text from the original number that the SIM had...which is a +44 area code (foreign). The texts don't show on my phone because it blocks the incoming message as spam from that area code. I talked to Hologram and they said it has to be something in the CL1 that is telling it to send. Doesn't make sense to me, but the problem is that I"m getting charged $0.19 every time I start the car because the CL1 is still automatically replying with some sort of message, even though I don't want it to. I have no idea how to stop it from doing that.

Could you do a video on how to wire this all together. I'm interested in doing this but not really experienced.

I don't do this all the time. Just once in this car and it's done, sorry. But there's really not much more than what's on this video. Just follow the instructions in the remote starter manual and then do what I did in this video.
