    I was a die hard pen battle guy until I got my first vanford, now it’s hard to pick up anything else. I find it helps me land more fish and it’s held up better then the pens so far. Helpful content as always. Love the mix of pure fishing and reviews and fishing info. Congrats on 750!

      Thanks dude. I’m with you… my buddy is a guide and had a lot of issues with the battle 2 lineage, causing me to stray from that line. I do have a couple surf rods but they barely get used and I got them for a steal in the used market. I love this reel and I feel the same way you do about them.

    Today I bought a Vanford 4000 for FL inshore. I decided I wanted it, but honestly can’t say I needed it. I still fish with tackle I bought in late 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s, mostly ABU Garcia. I have taken good care of them, they still worked beautifully, and I catch lots of fish. I don’t recall losing a fish due to fault of the rod or reel. Regardless, I could afford the Vanford (on a Bull Bay rod), so I’m upgrading. I am truly surprised at how many people think they need to spend hundreds of dollars for dependable tackle to catch fish. Today I did, but not because I felt I really needed to. I just wanted to.

      That’s the best way to go about it too. Most of todays gear is plenty powerful and capable but it’s nice to spoil yourself every so often. I hope you enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed mine. I like it so much, I bought a client one as a closing gift.

    Amazing,I just purchased a Vanford 1000 and a Stradic 1000HG,side by side the smoothness of the STRADIC blows the Vanford away.Spinning the reels side by side the Stradic spins 2&1/2 more rotations than the Vanford in many sample’s trying to determine the best overall.Stradic is smoother despite the micro gearing of the Vanford.I also ordered the Stella in 2500 series and I can’t determine between the Stella and Stradic which spins smoother.I think I will probably send the Vanford and the Stradic back and keep the Stella.Amazing smoothness and the way it stacks the line is another level,and almost silent,Cheers!

      Hey Russell, It's been some time since I made this video and I have had the Vanford rebuilt once already and I could use a few new bearings again. This is not a downing of the reel - I have put it through hell and it has always performed. I think you are safe with either of the choices.

It feels like they left out a bushing that would take up some of the gear lash. Maybe its a machining issue in the composite X-ship bearing mounts? Came across your video accidentally. Hope your vertigo is resolved by now. I had vertigo a few years ago, and it turned out to be a huge chunk of earwax in my ear canal pressing up against my eardrum. Vertigo went away after ENT doc flushed it out. While I like Shimano, I wouldn't get one for use in big water. They're not sealed too good (unless you're spending $1000), and their bodies aren't aluminum. I had a Shimano Baitrunner that I used to use for bluefish and striped bass, and I noticed the stem flexing when I hooked a 30-lbs striper. I put away that reel when I got home after landing that fish. My favorite saltwater reels these days are the Tsunami SaltX and the Penn Battle III DX. I relegated all my Shimanos, and Daiwas to freshwater.

    I have 2000SHG vanford the original construction is defective because there is a lot of play from the reel handle with the main gear.Shimano Service cannot fix this they say its part of the normal reel but the sound is realy annoying every time when you spin the reel.
    Many others also that i have talked have the same issue i put mine on sale.
    Stradic FL is way more well build construction.
    Thats my opinion

    • @ericwilliamsfishing

      Mine does make some noise now that I think about it. I just assumed it was the typical roller bearing issue.

    How would you compare the Vanford to the Nasci FC?

    • @ericwilliamsfishing
      @ericwilliamsfishing  3 роки тому

      They both feel great but I’d say the trade off is value in materials with the Nasci vs a solid Alloy in the Vanford. I wish I had a whole set of Vanfords but the Nasci is plenty capable.

    My last shimano reel I had basically fell apart after one season. I'm done with all these overrated, overpriced reels. I have a Penn 704 for the surf, a Daiwa SS tournament for inshore fishing, and a shimano IX spinning reel for freshwater. Those reels will last for decades. Old school is where it's at.

    I'm sorry but the vanford is a fresh water reel not a saltwater reel. Shimano makes some saltwater reels.
    Give it 6 more months and it will lock up.
    You should have bought a shimano Spheros or Sarogosa. Not light but built for saltwater. Better reels.

    • @ericwilliamsfishing
      @ericwilliamsfishing  Рік тому

      I have all of the reels mentioned and they all work well. The only issue I’ve had with the Van is bearings. I have fished it hard and still love it other than bearing replacement every 6 Months.
