  • 7 Nights on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands - flying on Jetstar’s inaugural flight and staying in a local Airbnb. July 2023
Left Sydney at 9:30pm and arrived at 7:00am the same day. Crossing the International Date Line can mess with your head for a minute. Flight time was less than 6 hours going to Rarotonga and closer to 7 hours coming back. Brilliant place for a quick getaway.
We stayed at a fairly basic Airbnb but the location (Southern part of island) was amazing. Walk out of our apartment and you are on the beautiful beach with snorkelling right out the front. This area was very quiet and perfect for us. 7 nights of lazy beach days, reading and walking, hanging with the island dogs and not much else.
We caught the local buses (the clockwise and anti-clockwise bus) for the first few days, which was a great way to orient ourselves. Hiring a motorbike for a few days was the best way to get around and Neil’s motorbike licence process was all part of the Raro experience. We were able to lap the island a few times (32kms), visit the Muri night markets for dinner, Punanga markets, visit the yacht club for a cocktail (sounds fancy but isn’t) and drive the backstreets of Rarotonga to get a feel for local life.
    We give Rarotonga 4.5 stars.

We’re planning a trip to Rarotonga in January. My partner and I have some common ground that made us appreciate your video as well as made us chuckle - especially the vegetarian at home/but not always as much while traveling attitude, as well as the frugal tendencies- we always pack food and scavenge tree fruit etc. At the end of your vid, though it was a bit hard to hear, it seemed like you mentioned the South side was an ideal place to be situated for housing. Can you expand on that at all about where you might stay if you were to go back? Would love a recommendation from someone who seems to have similar interests; not big on resorts, like a kitchen and mellow location. Thanks!

yes....we are learning...our sound game needs improving :-) The south side of the island is less developed and there are plenty of properties around there that can do self catering etc. You can find them on Stayz, Booking.com or Airbnb. If we went again we would probably stay in the same place - there are at least 20 or so similar properties around Te Rito in the suburb Titikaveka where we stayed. We'd recommend staying around there. The east side is also good and has Muri beach close by however, there are a few more resort style properties. The wet seemed simlar to the east albeit the reef is closer to the shore and the north is where the capital, Avarua is, so more built up.

Hey. We stayed in TeRito Lagoon Villas. We had the Lagoon View Villa. I cant remember the price, but I do remember it was good value for what we paid.

The dogs there are the best, very friendly and they have a chilled island behavior about them

I am surprised that your resort doesn't provide filtered drinking water for its guests. You had to go to a community centre to fill up your drinking bottle every day. That's disappointing.

We stayed in a modest AirBnB not a resort. Resorts are not our jam. I would think the resorts provide filtered drinking water.
