Yes, in fact I thought Gong with Mike Howlett was very funky(apart from world music, jazz, progressive rock and space rock influences). So maybe it was one the points they can share Sting and Mike Howlett

After doing some research, it's my understanding that they both played bass at the same time! The main groove sounds a lot like Sting's feel to me.
