I'm a big fan of this one. The fact good single screen multiplayer games are still somewhat of a rarity today and the fact other games never really borrowed and built upon the Gain Ground formula means it's still pretty fresh today.
Me and my friend play this game a few times a year. It’s an absolute classic. Blonde Archer (the Dwarf One) is definitely the best character in my opinion since he’s so flexible and his 8 way spear is amazing.
Love this game. So happy you got to talk a bit about Ninja Princess as it’s a game I didn’t ever think you would get a chance to cover as is arcade and SMS only. Glad you could connect the dots a bit with Gain Ground with it, a game I have been looking forward to your coverage on for awhile. Glad you came around on this one.
I picked up this game in 2008 when I was getting back into sega genesis games and I love playing it with my friends we came up with our own names for the characters. Longshot larry, bazooka joe and old rambo are some of them 😂. It truly does shine in multiplayer. Choosing the right character to assist your friend or have them pick off a sniper enemy as you run in to rescue another character.
1991 is off to a great start. Very nice to see the connections to Ninja Princess and to Quartet. Looking forward to future videos on the adult games of the LaserActive and Joe Montana Football.
FREAKIN’ YES! Someone learned about Gain Ground Again through my video(s) and translation document and spread the word to a larger audience! Mission accomplished!
Hey. Yes, your breakdown was so helpful. I'd previously stumbled across the gameplay video and had done my own breakdown for this video's script. But as I was finalizing the edit and going back to attribute the video properly I stumbled across your breakdown and was so glad I did. It was awesome to see a thorough analysis of the gameplay footage by someone who has such a deep knowledge of these games. Thanks for your great work!
@@sewart I thought that might’ve been the case! I knew finding GG Again here in the west without anyone covering it in English would be near impossible, so I did my best to spread the word! Great job on this video, by the way. You covered a lot of what I already knew, but still managed to teach me new things as well, like the fact that the Switch Arcade port has a Genesis-Hard game mode in it. Not to mention, having a consistent and well-researched timeline of version release dates is extremely useful!
Yeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!11 🥳🥳🥳 My alternate-history childhood continues! I was a Nintendo kid; my little sister bought a (ahem) Mega Drive around 1998, but i never owned one and aside from discovering a handful of RPGs and RPG-adjacent games via emulation - Shining Force, Crusader of Centy etc. - and the megahits like Sonic and Streets of Rage, I missed out, and have been introduced to so many great games through Generation-16 - and we're only just getting to 1991! Thanks for your labours, Greg - Onwards!!
I remember seeing this in my local arcade growing up in Nashua, New Hampshire - and fobbed it off as a Gauntlet clone, which I'd never been much into anyway. I was a bit too young (and hadn't yet moved to the US) in 1985, so maybe I missed out, but Simpsons Arcade was my go-to for a 4-player game. This looks great though - I recently picked up a Switch and I'll probably give this a try. (Is it online multiplayer?) When I saw this was a 40-minute video I assumed you'd gone back to the 5-an-episode format, but nope, you spent 40 minutes talking about one game! 😂 I've gotta say Ive loved seeing the progression of your episodes getting more and more in-depth and higher quality as time has gone on; I know there's only so much you can say about Space Harrier II or Super Thunder Blade, but you're certainly not going through a half-dozen lines of narration over a 4-minute video for many notable games anymore hey. The quality and depth of your videos are really impressive these days - I'd even compare it to Jeremy Parish's top-shelf NES Works series, certainly in the quality of the research and historical context you put into the more important games. I was really looking forward to this when you said you were working on Season 3 and I'm thrilled it's here. Well worth the wait, and I'm keen as for further episodes. Keep up the great work Greg! I'll just add, G-16 is responsible for getting me back into shooters (btw, thank you so much for not calling them "Shmups" - I viscerally hate that word, and put it on the same level as people who refer to pizza as "za".) Hellfire and Whip Rush are killer games.
Best example of this - when I watched The Gaming Historian's History of Tetris video - so good it would stand out as top-tier even on a paid streaming service or broadcast TV - I didn't learn anything I hadn't already learned from your Tetris episode. Enough rambling for one comment section, but I thought I'd point that out 😎
@@Khardankov Thank you so much. The show has definitely evolved from the short review format. I'd love to go back and re-do those old episodes, but as it is I doubt I'll ever get through the whole Genesis library. Comparing my stuff to Jeremy's videos is high praise. I'm blushing!
GS, you've outdone yourself again. Both Gain Ground and Crack Down were very fun in the arcade and the Genesis ports are still among my favorites to head back to simpler times and game like my thumbs have minds of their own. As a previous commentor mentioned Ninja Princess control scheme just works so beautifully for making a fun and interesting top down shooter, i never connected the two of these games. Silly me. Anyways, great work bringing so many tines to a very polished fork under inspection. Thank you.
My friends & I spent hours on this game back in the day! I heard Phil & CJ watched this but they didn't like it as much. This game is definitely a jewel in the rough!! It's up there with Renovation's Master of Monsters in regards to uniqueness & soundtrack!!!!
There will never be a time I would ignore a Gain Ground video. All time fav

This is yet another Genesis game that I'd written off as uninteresting for 30 years. First impressions don't do this game justice.
Gain Ground is an absolute gem! My friend and I would spend hours on this game back when it first came out!

The PS2 version's theme remix is damn good

I have some good ideas for the Joe Montana video.

@sewart Oh man I can't wait for you to do a video on that one! Just stay away from the PS1 sequel 🤣🤣🤣
Fantastic video
A great game!
