- Very sad news, Stereophile writer and Deputy Editor Art Dudley passed away on Tuesday, April 14. His wife Janet and daughter Julia are in my thoughts.

I still find it unbelievable that Art has died. I never knew him in person but have "read" him for 30 years. Listener was my favorite mag by far. My heart goes out to his wife and daughter.
Oh dear! I had no idea until I saw your video Steve. May Art rest in piece. He was a true legend in this industry (way overused word by fitting in his case). I always loved his no nonsense approach to hifi, respected his vast knowledge, enjoyed his jokes and easy writing style. I thought he was a very safe pair of hands when it came to reviewing hifi gear. I am actually quite upset by his passing even though I never knew him or met him. I guess it happen when you hear that someone you look up to is no longer here.
I am sorry for your loss. I can see from your video that how much he meant to you. I feel for Art’s friends and family. Thank you for sharing some of your experiences with Art and stay safe Steve. We need you to live until you are 100.

Love his writing. Loved his hifi. He didn’t need the latest gear. He didn’t use the stuff he reviewed. He used the gear that he loved. Great in a reviewer.

An audiophile legend
I met Art at the 2014 Munich High-end show while talking to John DeVore in the Sibatone/Western Electric/GIP room. He came across as a really nice guy, not all full of himself like some audio reviewers, but warm and friendly. He will be greatly missed at Stereophile magazine and by all who met him, and all those who enjoyed his articles. Thanks Steve for making this video. We can all see how hard it must have been to do...
Very sad to lose Art. I always loved his work. We would email each other but never met. Much love to his family and memory.
A dear man who loved guitars (which is how we connected, through his work at The Fretboard Journal) and music. I agree with you; the best writer on audio that I have experienced. RIP, Art.

Art’s erudition about all things musical was an inspiration-I was continually in awe with the depth of his knowledge about bluegrass and classical
and whilst I wasn’t a fan of flea powered amps and high sensitivity speakers, the wry way he went about his business was unique-bless you Mr Dudley
I first met Art through a pennysaver ad in the late 1970’s.
As all musicians did back then, he was looking to fill in membership for a pop/dance/folk/ type band.
I showed up with my bass and we jammed hard…..so hard in fact that then and there he switched to power pop with a punk attitude. I didn’t join but we were great friends for life.
He put together a tight trio he called The Norm, a very special mostly originals band with a fantastic audience rapport and dozens of dancing maniacs every gig. The fan base was darn good for the clubs and The Norm was quite busy doing good business through the 1980’s.
I worked in another band at the time and we crossed paths often. Many nights after gigs we’d get breakfast with our close knit coterie of pals and band-wives. Art Dudley, for those who don’t know, was an unlikely but very real small time rock star but a sweet souled two-feet-on-the-ground type of presence on and off stage.
He was clearly more than clever. He was more than brilliant. I know deep down he was a genius with a massive heart, lots of patience, wit and humor. He wrote such exiting and wonderful songs. I did have the pleasure of recording many of these in a couple of studios back when, with Art producing. The cherished cassette recordings still sound pretty good still.
I can’t believe he’s gone.

Hello, Steve. You have truly captured the spirit of Art Dudley.
I first met "Artie" about 1976 when he was a copywriter and I was an on-air announcer at two small radio stations in the college town we both lived. We immediately became very close friends and lived together in a household shared by members of a short-lived folk-rock band known as "Witness." He became the Best Man at my wedding in 1980. Later, still, I designed the original "Listener" magazine masthead and loved reading every issue, especially the quirky cover photos. I still own and love the towering Magnapan MG speakers that were once Art's and, like your story Steve, he insisted on coming to my home to set them up for me. He truly loved music, audio, writing songs, and telling stories. He was a true intellect without excuse and became such a good friend to so many. So many more stories to tell. Thanks, Steve, for such a wonderful recount. Cheers.
I'm replying to my own post to underscore Steve's statement, "Art Dudley is the best audio writer of all time." - I totally agree. There is no equal and probably never will be.

RIP Art Dudley. I never bought any of the magazines but I have read a number of his reviews online. Perhaps most memorable to me was Ken Micallef's VERY recent two-part video he did with Art where Art talked about his favourite jazz lps and took us on a tour through his system. That's really worth checking out for anyone who is interested. Sorry for your loss, Steve.
Art and a Post-it.....I saw a copy of "Listener" in a local Hi-Fi Shop and was immediately hooked, I sent a check for a subscription and for back issues. In return I received one of Art's (in)famous post it-notes stating he was closing up shop and going home for the day because of my generous order. A class act and an exceptional writer, I waited with baited breath and instantly devoured each issue of "Listener".
I had to come back and watch this again. I have read many articles from Art in the roughly 30 years I’ve been an audiophile. He was unique and you always knew you’d been in for some tongue in cheek reading while being educated. Just sad to think he’s gone......
I had a few private message chats with Art on FB and it was always such a joy to chat. Such a lovely, deep, warm Gentle Man.
So sorry, Steve, for your loss. I loved your collaborations at Listener - and I have every copy. You took me along on this musical journey with you and that is irreplaceable, as is Art. RIP.
I know it's been 3 years now but I still miss art thanks to you Steve I got to know art Dudley's work and after his passing I was lucky enough to win some auctions on eBay I cherish those albums and CD procol harum signed by Gary Booker and Reid!! Thanks
Art seamed like a cool dude, and your endearing segment on him was touching proof of it. Deep felt sympathy too anyone effected by his loss. So very sad. Art was a classy writer, an example of clarity and style. Reading his contributions for Stereophile, it always felt like he was writing specifically for me. I will miss him. Vale Art, RIP.
I never knew Art but have been a fan of his writing and sense of humor since Listener. I was also happy when he joined Stereophile. I completely agree that he was the best audio writer. RIP Art
Having just lost my father to the pestilence of covid19, this comes as another sad shock.
I read the stereophile staff farewells in disbelief last night.
Art loved music. He was a gifted musician. He knew what he liked to hear. An anachrophile: He boldly carried on using ancient Altec speakers with carved wood lattice grilles firmly ON! Garrard turntables! "Modern" Shindo valve electronics? Art was unafraid to let his "Freak flag fly". He showed us how to enjoy the great gift of Music instead of follow high tech trends in pursuit of the impossible.
We got to know Arts family and home through his writing. Our condolences. And hope you draw some comfort knowing that God knew him well. He will rise again: John 5:28

I only know of Art through his work. Art's written work was superb in my opinion. His intellect and wit simply meshed well with my sensibilities.
Then, with the ever rising popularity of UA-cam, immediately upon viewing video content that included Art, one gets a sense of his gentle sweetness and grace that he imparts upon every topic of discussion.

I spent a great day with Art in Paris where I live about 7 years ago. I had lunch with Art his wife and daughter. We spent the afternoon being tourists walking in the Marais. Shocked he has died so young.

I only met Art once, many years ago. At the time I was only one issue short of a complete set of Listener magazine, and he very generously gave me, a fellow he had never met before and didn't know from Adam, the one I needed. He was that kind of man.
I still have the complete Listener run.

I took some time today to watch some of this great man’s videos and I caught a glimpse of what a unique legend of a person he was. That one where he has recently moved into his new house a few years back, what a brilliant video. Such a warm, intelligent and interesting guy with a great sense of humor.

I used to always buy Listener Magazine. It was Art's review of the Meadowlark Kestrals that caused me to purchase those wonderful speakers. He was spot on in his assessments. This is sad to lose him but he brought music to so many. So sad to hear of his passing.

Art was one of my FB friends and I didn’t really know him, but he took the time to leave a warm comment on my mother’s passing a few years ago. I was very moved by that. You are spot on about his articles, I really enjoyed each and every one of them. Very sad news indeed.

I'm not an original english speaker so it was very hard to get to the point of reading specialized magazine with eloquent wiriters who are using wide range of words to describe music mostly. But when I got close to enough, I always liked Art's reviews because he had never lost his sight from what is important and he did it so smoothly. He was my favourite writer along with you Steve. Two of you always kept things simple and fun! Take care!

I only met Art once a very long time ago. I think he was working for Harry Pearson at the time as his "set-up" guy. We only had a brief conversation but I still have a vivid memory of the impression he made on me as being a really decent person. Reading him over the years I also came to appreciate his wry somewhat iconoclastic sense of humor. Art followed his muse, he was an individual, and a poet. For some reason audio produces some great writers, and Art was certainly one of them.

Agree with you Steve, he was the best writer. I loved Listener magazine, and still own every issue. I was sad when it ceased, and I still remember pretty well my happiness when I heard he would be writing for Stereophile. He is leaving a pair of shoes no one can fill.
I didn`t know him. But in every video he was in , he seem to have been a very warm and kind person.
He always made me intrested in the music or the products he was talking about.

Sorry to hear about Art. Friendships like that don't come often, and you have my condolences. I've been a Procolholic since 1970, and was really surprised at their mention in your video. You'll be thinking of Art every time you spin a Procol disc...bittersweet but memories of great times can't be beat.

This is so, so sad. Art Dudley was, hands down, my favorite Stereophile writer. His, fairness, humor and sense of humanity was without peer. He will be sadly missed. I’m grateful to have had just a glimpse of his greatness.

Steve great tribute to Art! I was just revisiting Art's Audiophile UA-cam videos a few days ago, so was shocked to hear about his passing. He was giving a tour of his "new" house from a couple years ago. He seemed so vibrant. He will be missed!

This is such sad news, a real loss of a truly gifted man.. I can see this loss has effected you deeply Steve & I wish I could say something to make it better but sadly I know that isn't possible. I can honestly say I know how you're feeling. AJ Conti of Basis was a close friend of mine & I spoke to him a couple of weeks before his sudden death making plans to have coffee before the audio show here in California, I still can't believe he's gone. Life is a funny thing as we make plans & God laughs. Sadly time is our most precious commodity that we can't buy at any cost. Even though he is gone he will always be with you & I'm sure you are a better person because of it, all the best.
Very sad. I loved his sense of humor - his articles always made me laugh. He was serious about audio but didn't take himself too seriously. A major loss for the audio community.
Anybody who’d spend the time and effort to create such clever magazine covers really loved what they were doing. I can’t recall how many of his reviews I’ve read and enjoyed over the years but I’m sad that I never put a picture to his face until now. Thanks for sharing your fond memories of him.
I only know Art from his more recent writing and his profile video on Stereophile's UA-cam channel. The video is hilarious, but his passion for vintage gear and his love for listening to music shines through. Definitely a loss for the Audiophile community, and certainly for you too Steve. So sorry to hear of his passing.
I was a Listener subscriber for several years before it went under. Really enjoyed that magazine. Art was an excellent writer and I always enjoyed reading his stuff even when I was sometimes shaking my head in disagreement. R.I.P. Art.

I loved Art's articles and reviews in Stereophile. I always took whatever he said as gospel, and he was never wrong. My latest purchase based upon his comments was the Tavish Design's Adagio phono pre-amp. There was something about his writing style and his genuineness that I knew if he had praise for gear, I would not be disappointed. And I never was. And I still have the Adagio preamp to this day. RIP Art.
How much did I know him? Bugger all. I'm a nobody audiophile from Melbourne Au. He said hi once on facebook when it was my birthday. Wow, what a great guy. Compared to all you reviewers in New York I didn't know him. Yet his taste in audio was so like mine and friends of mine in Melbourne that we read his stuff every month. He was an icon. A hero for what we and HE loved. So we actually FEEL close. Like we do know him. There must be many in my position. And now this shock. He will be really badly missed. We wanted him to live forever. And write. He bats for our team in Audio :). Very sad. Far away nobody's like me, even we have a real tear in the eye. Lets hope there is a Heaven and there is one with freaking AUDIO in it, and lets hope he can enjoy this with the Almighty, and lets hope we all meet again one day in same. RIP Art D. Art Dudley has been one of my favorite audiophile writers since I subscribed to Listener back in the day. So sad to hear he's gone.
OMG!!! What horrible news this morning! Art was one of my favorite guys at Stereophile. I just loved his video's, especially the one where he moved into his new home in Albany. He also put Shindo electronics and Devore speakers on my radar screen as very cool stuff....just like its owner.
I never met Art but he'd be the perfect down to earth guy to have a cup of coffee and to immerse in all his insights.
Steve, I am so sorry for your loss. He was obviously beloved and left all of us way too soon. It brings tears to my eyes and also infuriates me that people are still being taken away by cancer. Yet we (the world) continue to waste money on all kinds of less meaningful things and put off finding a cure.
