So in the last video we took the Reliant for its first ever drive after installing the Kawasaki ZX6R motorbike engine, now although it went well.. it could have gone better. We couldn't get the car past first gear as the shifter wasn't working, so today we are fixing the problems which arose in the first video.. and making some mods to make it even more fun for next time.

Im applying my knowledge from driving rear wheel drive cars in regard to the rear end losing traction, I know the rear in in this car will have no grip.. so I would rather it act consistently rather than fighting itself.. LSD's are great for fast grip driving, not so much this application, plus I am going to spend thousands on a diff for a car that wont turn a corner anyway? hahaha nope

There is also the issue of bump steer because it's a tricycle and the fact that it's got half as much rubber at the front.
I can see this ending up upside down, reliants handle horrifically anyway, I know I've had one.

With this balls up job on the diff, this plastic pig is either going sideways up or belly up. There is a reason the diff is like it was and that reason is that Reliant knew what they were doing.

Sweet project mate. I’ve got a K11 Nissan Micra that I’ve put a Suzuki Bandit 1250 engine into.
I’ve also used a push/pull cable (TH400 selector cable from memory) and it works perfectly. The mounting points do have to be rigid though as you’ve worked out, and the throw of the cable end needs to move in/out as parallel as possible. It looks like it’s moving in quite a bit of an arch at the shift lever. That could be helped by bringing the attachment point a bit higher up the shift lever.
I do think that a solid diff will be a bit sketch I a 3 wheeler too, but you’re gonna find out soon enough. It should at least do some good donuts!

  • @bigbasil1908
    @bigbasil1908 7 місяців тому +16

You want to limit the movement of your gear lever so that it doesn't stretch the cable. I think as it is, the cable getting stretched is what ended up snapping the cable. You only want the gear lever to travel backwards and forwards enough to be able to change the gears

It gets to a point where you’re watching a video and suddenly become aware that the dream is bigger than the talent. Running a 109hp engine through what I would start to call a death box is getting rather concerning.
I’m trying to not be completely negative but man; there’s so many dangerous things with this build, with no real technical know-how. It’s just slap-dash and bodged. I’m all for special builds but man.
Absolutely knackered the housing, the cable setup, the engine mounting brackets, the cable management brackets. You flip this thing and any of that buckles it’s going to impale somebody. Or you’re going to bind up a cable and run yourself WOT into a tree.
Please, please reset yourself and instead of loading shit on shit - take a step back and have a re-think on how you’re approaching it and stop rushing through.

Also, it shouldn't be hard to change gears - those 600 gearboxes are usually pretty smooth. Might be easier with the engine running. Personally I wouldn't weld the diff on a rialto/robin, the open diff is a safety feature if you lift a wheel there isn't any power getting to the ground and it just sits back down, one of the main things they done on top gear to get it to roll was weld the diff, that being said with the bike engine it might lose traction before it starts to lift a wheel 😂 I have a mk3 robin and fancy putting a bike engine in it

If you go onto 2 wheels the open diff means you lose power, with a welded diff you'll roll it over

I think it would be worth adapting the clutch cable idea to using a control rod and watts linkage style as a pivot instead. Similar idea to a bellcrank so it's reliable and strong but instead of changing direction 90 degrees, its a 180 degree change.
Getting a 'watts linkage' style pivot should also mean that the gears are reversed too so pulling back on the gear stick will go up a gear instead of how it's currently pushing forward to go up a gear.

OK with the gear issue why did you you just spin the arm 180 degrees on the splines that way you could of still mounted the bracket on the floor? Second problem..... Why would you want to weld a diff on a vehicle with only one steering wheel. Think about it.. where does that front wheel run when you are driving around? Yeah thats right , in the middle of the road where all the gravel and dirt collects where there is less grip.

Welding the diff........ this is going on it's roof. drove one for 3.5 years, with the correct tyres, no need to weld the diff, they slide sideways nicely even on a stock 850cc engine. this will only be useful on a drag strip now. Far less controllable.

All i see is constructive criticism on this page we all want to see him succeed But safely. welding up a diff on a 3 wheeler isnt it will cause it tip maybe even into a tree at speed. Trying to stop that isnt hatefull. many people dont /refuse/ or ignore the diffrence between constructive criticism or just criticism for criticism sake them people always come worse off or a croper. Someone may have already said, but just a heads up. Neutral on a bike is a floater between 1 and 2 it won't click or clonk into neutral is more of a feel (gently, gently) 1st to 2nd goes straight in. Click click no problem.
Normally when riding you would go all the way down to 1st, if it doesn't go let the clutch out a small bit and your feel it click down... but down to 1st and slowly towards 2nd till the neutral light comes on or it feels slack. Thought this might help.
