Old guy at work had an 85 CR500, he still talks about it today. Says the thing was just stupid. Almost killed him a few times. If you don't want a CR500, you are not a man.

theres a reason why Honda stopped making the 500s ,they didnt sell thats it ,i worked the floor selling bikes for over 30 years and in the end we were nearly giving em away ,in the end we made the last 500s we had in the shop road legal to try and create some interest and lost money on each and every one of them ,THEN from nowhere a rumour started that they were the greatest the fastest widowmakers the holy grail etc etc etc ,truth is they were desert racers ,a 125 with a decent rider would smash a 500 on a track a 250 would eat them on enduros ,90 percent of the survivors are sittin in barns or mancaves or online for sale for ridiculous money

With the right rider and setup the cr500 is definitely a winner but keyword right setup the cr500
Also needs an incredible rider that’s not afraid to ring it out and keep it on the top end the entire time like you said there both stock but if you put the crf450r suspension on with that frame and motor you’d have a beast of a bike
Edit: idk what Hondas doing with their bikes but a modern 450 with a single overhead cam is ridiculous compared to the kx450 I remember riding a 2006 honda 250r with a single cam and rode a 2005 Suzuki 250 with dohc and the Suzuki was way faster and had a way better power band it’s crazy they can call that a race bike LOL also I believe it gives it low end torque but it ruined how the bike felt it just lugged the motor in the high rpm compared to the Suzuki
Another edit: I know I’m just rambling but I would get a newer exhaust for that cr500 and keep the stock one safe also I couldn’t see if you had a skid plate on it but definitely don’t want a hole in that motor even if it’s super unlikely

Edit so does the Suzuki but the Suzuki is insanely fast revving and gets peak hp at about 8800 rpm(56hp) but fall off to the Hondas hp(52) at 11000 rpm

Good channel, but its been proven on many UA-cam channels and open events to this day 500 still takes on 450 without a problem. 450 had to come a very long way to even keep up with 500 should tell you everything. I'm leaving my personal hatred towards 4 jokes out of this, yes they are heavier, more to go wrong and sound like a wet fart but they have come a very long way to compete with the 500 but still with efi they do not take on a 500. A 450 is lazy programmed that lits of intermediate riders can just get on and go. A 500 is all skilled rider, you have to know and be able to do so much more on a 500. I respect 500 and no one person can or will tame that beast.

If you want to do a fair comparison, you'll have to bridge that 20 year technological gap. Get that 500 engine worked and you should have around 65-70 rwhp. The cool thing is that since these bikes are in such an anemic state of tune stock you'll still have a reliable machine with that kind of power on tap. Only thing is there won't be much point in a drag race as it'll smoke the 450 like it's standing still.
Nothing is better than the cr500 period....... I won more hill climbs than anyone riding one. Braap 👍👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸

I grew up trying to kill myself on those Honda 500's, I still miss them! 2nd and 3rd gear starts, were the standard, 4th gear starts were for being pissed off on thick dirt starts! Not recommended, i still feel these things on cold mornings!..lol...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 👋🤠
CR-500 has approximately 25% MORE TORQUE then a CRF-450

Not a fan of the 4 strokes at all unless its in the XR line of bikes.. wont get a better built, longer lasting bike than a honda XR..
now on to the main event..
4 strokes cost more, weigh more, cost even more to rebuild an lacks the torque of the 2stroke.. however will last longer than a 2stroke if just trail riding an occasional racing.. average 450 power is around 45hp an takes a lot of work and money to get one to 50 without blowing it up but will be less dependable an wont last as long...
Now on to the 2 strokes..
They weigh less, have more power, cost less to fix.. but require actual skill to ride at speed for racing.. the big bore bikes last longer because you cannot ride them at there potential! Unless your Ricky Johnson or Jeff Ward or Jean Michelle Bale you will never rag a big bore out! Vs the 4 strokes! You will stay in the power all the time to get the same torque an power as the 2stroke.. an you can go fast on a 500, but you will respect her or she will bury you! Even with the new technology of the 4's they still fail in comparison to the 2stroke bikes.. yamaha and ktm 2 stroke 250's will still hang with a 450 if not still out run em.. so that should tell you all you need to know.. but ask all the new kids on the block about takin a ride on a 2 stroke! Whether a 250 or 500 an im talking professional riders, like jett an several others that nearly pissed their pants, after they got off of em with legs trembling! In other words ya gotta be a man to ride 2 strokes.. an a lazy rider to ride the fours! Look at carson brown, an some of the fastest riders out today! They all love an ride 2 strokes! Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Jeff Stanton, Jeff Ward, Guy Cooper, an many more! those are the men who made racing what it is today, all rode 2 strokes.. there's a reason they were kings of super an outdoor motocross.. an its all because of the strokes! An the biggest an longest record jumps to date were done with a 2stroke.. Long live the 2 stroke!!!❤❤❤❤😊

I grew up in the 2S era and 500s are so overrated. They suck at Moto and the manufacturers only kept them around for desert racing. Even In the late 80s the 250s were way faster on a track. For the record I rode a 125.
Simply put... the man would have to ride the 500 and you would have to let your woman ride the 450. Who could argue with that?
I don’t have a CR 500 only rode one of them in my life and it was scary as shit I do have a YZ 252 stroke and it’s a beast but I also have rode the 450s hola Miller M easy ride faster but I still love the two strokes better the fun factor
Two strokes are a different beast i use to race motocross on them. They will also make you a better rider where their lighter and more nimble bounce around alot and less traction to. Given the choice id take a 2 stroke every time over a 4 stroke. But thats just my opinion i grew up on them. Good looking bikes buddy.
Put the Cr500 motor in the 450 frame and have the perfect bike
Honda purposely did not do this for many reasons. The only person that has successfully done this and that should ever be able to do this is the professional king and legend himself AJ Wagoneer. His frame world is the only one I've seen it crack or break/death rattle apart. That man has perfected on how to do this. Still however the 500 was built and meant for a steel frame, ergonomics and strength. You're idea and comment is definitely great but to many people hack bikes up and do it wrong and hurt not only themselves but others doing this improperly lol

Put a Keihin 38mm pwk airstriker in the cr500 you’ll see a difference in throttle response. It’s worth it
I have the perfect jetting for this and the stock carb if you need it. Just need the elevation and temp you usually ride in

the 500 is king for me no matter what, you need to try and 500 in a new crf frame its crazy good, i have a 98 cr500 steel frame and also a 2021 crf450 with a 2000 cr500 engine in it and that is a whole other beast
