I bend out my EWG’s just a bit. Makes a tremendous difference in hookups.
I definitely agree that overall the straight shank is superior. However, I still use ewg hooks if I'm around wood because they don't hang up as much.
Absolutely the straight shank hook is best for most baits, however the wide gap works better with certain baits like tubes and swimbaits
With straight shanks I don’t Tex pose and lose fish off them at all. It’s a myth you lose fish if you do this. 99% of anglers set the hook hard enough and hooks are sharp enough that this isn’t a problem at all.
For years we did that n hooked plenty of fish. Good point
I made a switch two years ago to SSs and it was day and night. You’ve just got to get the bait to lay straight on the bait.
Some days Hook em all some days lose almost every one! And Randy video idea.. prespawn jig techniques with best colors. Preciate ya
I used the owner haymaker during 2023 season and I like it. I think it’s the best of both…..
Wow, Thank you. I have been wrestling with this exact question for years.
I know that you have mentioned using straight shank hooks in previous videos and I have my collection in my hook box, can't wait til things thaw out!! Great video Randy!
EXCELLENT topic - I’ve wondered about this for years. Thanks for the detailed explanation!
Years ago I watched a study on this and it mentioned that the hook set made more of a difference than the hook style. I have seen where certain individuals bend the angle of the tip of the their EWG hooks to get more of the point angle that the straight shank gives you. Owner now has the Haymaker EWG hooks. It has this tipped up bend to their hooks right from the factory. I would think this would give you the best of both worlds. I am doing my own assessment of this over a few years going between hook styles and trying different hook sets seeing what works best for me. Thanks for all the tips.
Thanks for the info Randy, I appreciate it.
As always, good info. Thanks Randy
Great video. You Answered my question
Straigjt shank is alll we ever had. Then EWG came out and I switched . I am a low end angler though and im not gonna go and toss all my hooks out to the trash. But this is good info for the future.
Good info . Thank you. I'll try it out
I saw a previous video you made about using straight shank hooks and decided to try them. I wish the straight shank hooks were more available locally and at a lower cost. I had a harder time finding them, and they cost quite a bit more.
Ive always used the EWG hooks.
Good job randy
You mentioned two types of straight shank hooks (o shawnessy) but you did not mention if you preferred one over the other or if they had different applications. Also, I thought you were using the tush hook on tubes. Is the ewg for weightless vs the tush.
I use an offset round bend gammy. Not ewg. I wont use an ewg. I flip with a straight shank. I will use a hybrid style with really big worms, but i bend the tip up & to the right. It helps the hook up ratio.
Do you have a guide for the hook size vs the bait size? Good info and I will try some straight shank hook
I got the gama g finesse worm hook, so we'll see what happens this year. I use all types but my favorite is a off- set round bend
Try these: Trokar TK180 light wire straight shank hook. Owner HD light wire flipping hook & the grip pin finesse hook by owner. If you fish grass - the 5/0 gets better hook ups.

I have found that the ewg hook will bow on you if you try to set the hook hard..will start using straight shank hooks more...thanks
Ive always used an ewg for worms and i recently tried using a flipping hook and i noticed that my worms dont last as long with a flipping hook
Haven't been able to buy the 3/0 size of the G finesse SS hook since last summer. My favorite hook, but it's always out of stock.
Question - if you skin hook a straight shank hook to one side of a worm, does it act like a rudder to steer the worm to one direction over the other. Or does it make no difference.
💯 agree
Can't say ive tried a straight shank..I'll give it a shot this year
You should definitely consider using a snell knot for straight shanks.
What size straight shank do you use for creature baits? I usually use a 4/0 EWG.
Were are the links?
Time to stock up on straight shank hooks.
Loved it
What size straight shank hook you use 90% of the time
3/0
@@randyblaukatintuitivethank you
Why would someone have ever stopped using a strait shanked hook ? They were proven !
This is where I like Gamakastu....only offset. If you're not on a boat, no need for that straight hook. Offset also allows for swimming if creatures for which Randy nor anyone did not teach. Give me the damn credits. I am the best in this game maties.
