CRIMINAL - How Did Igor Karkaroff Become Headmaster Of Durmstrang
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Today I wanna talk about how Igor Karkaroff not only got a teaching job but a headmasters position in one of the top wizarding schools in Europe, Durmstrang Institute. I think it's a question that goes relatively unanswered because this man was a nasty piece of work and he fooled nobody either that he had renounced his old death eater ways.

Given to Karkaroff was a Death Eater and saw that his 'favorite' pupil fell for a Muggle-born witch makes me wonder how he reacted
I’m wondering too about that. Maybe Krum told him how useful Hermione could be in the magical world
If he’s smart he’s probably not saying a whole Lotta anti-Muggle things as Voldemort returns.
Anti-Muggle rhetoric could help Voldemort and the death eaters recruit more people and win the wizarding war which would not be in his best interests as someone that ratted on some death eaters to keep himself out of prison.
I'd be surprised if Durmstrang didn't sign him up the moment he was cleared of all charges. Durmstrang was known for it's leaning towards the dark arts and probably wouldn't mind having him on the payroll but I also think he would've worked his way up towards the head position
Bit unfair - the dark arts is a form of magic. I mean I agree to truly protect yourself from the dark arts, you need to learn them. The MoM agents, like Moody, used the killing curse when needed. If Imperio could save the lives of countless people - is it so wrong to use it.
@@zandernewson9933 yeah I get you. I wouldn't mind learning the dark arts in a controlled setting with people who have experience of it. I guess the issue they had with the imperious curse is that it was mainly used to do awful things
Its leaning toward the dark arts., not it’s.
@@Wellch that was probably auto correct, it happens to me all the time because apparently "smart" phones don't understand proper English.
To be honest, I'm sure he just bribed them all with money
Hey Dean,
What do you think about the idea that ‘Fantastic Beasts’ should’ve been another book series instead of films?
I believe it makes sense personally - The story spanning twenty years is too huge to fit into five, two-hour films. Also, the lore surrounding the time period could be better expanded in books. Just my perspective. 📖
What we know:
- Karkaroff claimed to be deeply remorseful for his actions as a Death Eater
- Moody doubted his sincerity
- Dumbledore not only trusted him, but greeted him as an old dear friend
I choose to lend a great deal of weight to Dumbledore's assessment of Karkaroff, and believe that, like Snape, Karkaroff was genuine in his repentance of his Death Eater ways and not simply a coward running from the group he sold out for personal gain.
I think Dumbledore was just being polite
Snape wasn’t sorry for being a Death Eater, lol.
He literally called for the LITERAL MURDER OF A FATHER AND SON. He never was ever sorry for causing the death of James or the attempted murder of Harry.
Karkaroff remind me of US Murderous Police.
@@nintendogamingchannel1007 Most of supposed "cruelty" are actually justified, the news doesn't get views for following up "it bleeds it leads" stories when more info is found out and it turns out the police were justified. You should just look into all information once it's available and not when it first drops. Yes police can be cruel, but a VAST majority of thecases covered by the mainstream aren't. Also the US police are way better then a lot of other places, the UK police literally don't even do their job, they even do nothing about pedophiles, and in China the police will literally just kill you in broad daylight infront of everyone just for protesting. I mean no offense when I say this but you should probably look into stuff more before you comment on it, it's nice to have more participants in conversations about serious topics that actually care to educate themselves on the subjects they wish to comment on.
@Nintendo Gaming Channel get the fuck out of the internet and never come back.
Man, the legal system in Harry Potter was the real horrifying thing in the franchise.
No due process, no checks and balances, selectively letting criminals walk, pro pure-blood supremacists....and that's just a few
@@raijyn2452
'a few'
.....of your favorite things?
I have no idea why I thought of 'The hills are alive with music' while reading your reply.
right! 💀
Why? USA and UK legal system is a real horrorfying thing too! You can be a huge bad man or woman, but if u are a good informer/sneak/squealer you can get away with murder. That´s the reality in anglo saxon common law legal system.
It looks alike much with that of the real world basically 😂😂😂
This is the explanation that I subscribe to as well! It seems strange that this could happen given that there was some opposition to his appointment. However, it was a school shrouded in the dark arts and I think most saw it as an advantage to have somebody who had been in direct contact with arguably the most powerful dark wizard of all time. Good work lad!
I would like to know what would happened if Harry joined Voltomort even knowing what he did to his parents because of how the Dudleys treated him. What if Harry also went after the Dudleys and other muggles.
a possiblity for that would have been if draco knew it was him when they were getting fitted for robes and introduced him to his father (or mother whichever one was with him that day) but would voldy have allied with the boy who was supposed to kill him.
Voldemort would have tried to kill him the moment he gained Harry’s trust.
its dursleys
Voldernort would have found a way to convince Harry to stop being a horcrux and return his power back to him or just kept him as an close ally and assassin like Nagini
can you explain what happens to muggleborns who are born in the jurisdiction of Durmstrang? Are they just unaware of magic for their whole lives? Do they get a letter to Beauxbatons ?
From what I understand, based on the books and the 'wizarding world' website, most countries don't have their own formal school of magic. Many children are homeschooled, while others choose a school based on preference rather than location. I suppose distance isn't a huge issue for witches and wizards, and I've always imagined airport like places where people can catch portkeys to other countries. Anyway, if a muggleborn lives in a country that doesn't have its own school I would imagine it would be the responsibility of the local ministry of magic to inform them and their parents of what they are and tell them about the schools they could go to. They probably won't even mention Durmstrang.
0:28 LOL Harry looked so insignificant next to the other champions, all of them are so handsome with great bodies :P
There is no information in the books of course along this line, but I like to think that Karkaroff was a profoundly gifted wizard and perhaps somewhat famous in mainland Europe for his skills before he became a Death Eater. His experience and redemption combined with his skill made him an alluring candidate to be a teacher at an academic institution that prides itself on free expression of divergent views...
This is the first time in a long time that I saw one of your videos as soon as it was uploaded usually I wait a few hours before watching. Good to see you got a thousand views in less than an hour
I don't think Lucious ever worked for the Ministry. He was on the board of governors until the end of the Chamber of Secrets. But no one ever referred to him as a member of the Ministry. In fact, all through The Order of the Pheniox, they are questioning why Lucious keeps showing up at the Ministry.
Lucius wanted to show the people in power his long pretty blond hair.
Shouldn't he have had a problem with Hermione dating not just one of his students but Victor Crum...arguably his top, most high value student. I mean, she was his person in the lake... Which is kinda weird and high key sad. They shipped in Fluers little sister and all they could get for Victor was a muggle born witch he was crushing on and that he had literally, not known existed a month prior? If I had been Hermione I would have noped out the minute I regained consciousness and processed the entirety non consensual situation. But maybe it's just a muggle thing.
I'm pretty sure Karkaroff did have a problem with that, but seeing as the tournament was being hosted at Hogwarts he probably decided it was best to keep quiet. You make a good point about Victor Krum, something has to be very wrong with his life if the most important person in it is a girl he only knew for a few months. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with HIM though, so I wouldn't nope out immediately. Maybe have a talk with him, ask a few questions about his family. I'm sure that if the third task had taken place two months after Harry started his first year at Hogwarts, Ron still would've been the person he'd miss most despite the short time they've spent together, simply because Harry had such a terrible life.
The reason why Krum liked Hermione is because she wasn't awestruck by him being a celebrity.
It could be that his record was wiped clean so with no criminal record he wouldn't have the baggage of being a former Death Eater. He would have had a fresh start at that point.
I think it is brilliant that he became headmaster. He needed a focus. When your busy running a school your less likely to care about dark arts.
As always a great video, thanks for your continued work on HP.
I mean, it’s Eastern Europe in a world stuck in the 1700s.
His past as a Death Eater was probably what got him the job over other candidates in the first place. 😂
Durmstrang is at the border between Norway and Sweden.
Durmstrang is at the border between Norway and Sweden.
He looks like an eastern bloc human trafficker
If the Death Eaters were smart, once they found out they were handing out pardons for giving up members, they'd all give up each other, he's set free, and then just start their business again
You know what Dean that’s a interesting question because I’ve actually wondered that myself how did he become headmaster of Darren Strang when he was released from Aska ban and he been a competitor feature this is from Jordan by the way and I’m also from Ireland I’m autistic and I’m visually impaired
Death-eater or not, he was likely quite talented in offensive or combat-based magic and the Dark Arts. That seems to be Durmstrang's wheelhouse. So it doesn't surprise me that a wizard with practical experience would be able to outclass his competitors for a position as headmaster there.
Glad to see notifications are actually working again.
For now at least.
Great video as always, Dean, and of course I always enjoy a bit of dark humor Lol very fitting for the video subject.
I feel like an important distinction between the idea of releasing death eaters versus releasing serial killers is that at the time their were still an insane amount of active death eaters.
It makes pragmatic sense to entice captured death eaters to bargain their freedom for the capture of two or more death eaters since now that you know the particular death eater your releasing it will be much easier to apprehend them should the rejoin voldemorts ranks. Plus there I wouldn’t be surprised if a good number of released death eaters ended up being killed by death eaters.
Morally its not a wise choice but the ministry was on the verge of losing to Voldemort when they had that policy.
Except that bargain was made after Voldemort's first fall from power
I like the reference with the serial killers I thought of it more as when operation paperclip like what we did with the Nazis lol
Apparently dark witches and wizards have a tendency to form powerful groups and try to take over the world.
If you’re going to have a dark arts class at your school you need a dark witch or wizard to be the teacher but you don’t want them recruiting students to go off and fight for some dark wizard that’s trying to take over the world. So the best option to teach such a class is a dark witch or wizard that ratted on the group they were a part of, to avoid going to prison like the other members of the group, it’s safe to say they’re not recruiting for a faction that wants kill them.
I have to say I love this video it has really made me think about a character I really haven't thought about much and I'm realizing his story is quite interesting it would be interesting to see the tiny details of it
Durmstrang wasn't necessarily evil otherwise they wouldn't have been allowed to function. They just value power and strength over all else and the dark arts are very powerful. The reputation of being an ex-death eater would make him a good candidate for the faculty there, and as long as he showed an aptitude for cultivating strength in their students then he could definitely become the headmaster. The concerns of his past are easily dismissed due to the fact that he has no potential avenue for returning to the dark ways as any dark wizard from his time would most likely be enthusiastic about bringing retribution on him for his betrayal. So that bridge is safely burned.
I don't know I would think it would actually be kind of hard for him because he turned his back on the death eaters durmstrang being so heavily into the dark arts as it is you would think they would see it as a betrayal of the dark arts then again he had to have been at least somewhat savvy and a smooth talker in order to have convinced the ministry to let him go even with giving up names
Igor Karkaroff: Barty Crouch.... Junior!
'Barty Crouch Junior tries to run but gets apprehended.'
Barty Crouch Junior: Hello Father!
Barty Crouch Senior: I have no son!
If only Igor hadn't disclosed that name, what would Barty Crouch Junior would do if he wasn't sent to Azkaban.
There's something calming about your videos
As I recall the films at least, it wasn't Augustus Rockwood, but Barty Cruch Jr. who got sentensed to Azkaban... that's why it was so big a shock to everyone and not the least the Senior himself
They were both sent to Azkaban. Here's how it went in the books:
Barty Crouch Jr. was tried and then imprisoned along with the Lestranges for torturing the Longbottoms into insanity, then about a year later was swapped with his dying mother and snuck out of Azkaban by his father.
We don't know the exact charges against Karkaroff, only that it was something to do with Death Eater activities, but he was released after naming some names, including that of Rookwood. He did not name Barty Crouch Jr.
Rookwood was broken out of Azkaban by Voldemort, along with a bunch of other Death Eaters, during OotP. He used to work for the department of mysteries and he explained to Voldemort that only the subjects of a prophecy can remove its record from the shelf in the hall of prophecies, anyone else would just go insane if they tried. That's when Voldemort decided to try and get Harry to take the prophecy off the shelf for him.
@@limiv5272 Have you then seen the films where all this is going on?
@@mariannejensen349 No, I gave up on the films after Goblet of Fire. They changed the characters completely and made stupid changes to the plot and world that didn't help anything and I was too frustrated.
It was Rookwood in the books.
Or it could be he was a sleeper agent, a bit like snape. To flush out those who were closer to Voldermort and thats why he was able to become headmaster and why Dumbledore embraced him.
I always just assumed that in the magical world that part of the world is as corrupt and brutal as the real life world
@2:15, they should have given him a reduced sentence or lighter prison terms instead
parole has criminologists in muggle world to check he is safe to free , why not use truth drug on him then or something else ?
Or a cell with no dementors.
@@Wellch I think that's what they meant by 'lighter prison terms' - better conditions at prison
If I were JK Rowling, I would create a new magical school. This new school would be located and built deep in the middle of the Bavarian Alps (magically enchanted to be invisible to Muggles) with the help of those from Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Ilvermorny. I would call this school Waltzburg College of Fine Magic. This new school would open in either the late 90s (let's say after the Battle of Hogwarts) or early 2000s, thereby making it the newest magical school in the world.
Waltzburg (like Hogwarts) would be accepting of all magical human beings regardless of their blood status and would teach Defense Against the Dark Arts (and NOT the Dark Arts). Waltzburg would accept magical students from all of Central Europe (Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland). Like Hogwarts and Ilvermorny and unlike Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, Waltzburg would be a mixed school for both boys and girls. The coat of arms of Waltzburg would be a jet-black eagle on a peach-coloured field. The architecture of Waltzburg would resemble the typical Bavarian fairy-tale castles (such as Neuschwanstein Castle) of Ludwig II (sometimes called the *Swan King* or Fairy Tale King). Like Hogmeade is to Hogwarts, there would be a nearby village for the Waltzburg students to visit; this village (let's call it Potzburg) would resemble the typical Central European fairy tale village (such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Bavaria or Hallstadt in Austria). How big would Waltzburg be, let's just say it would be large enough to house the entire wizarding population of Central Europe between the ages of 11 and 19.
I can also see Waltzburg developing something of a rivalry with Durmstrang (which is located in the far north of Europe and which is willing to accept); Durmstrang (which accepts international students, but presumably mainly students from the WHOLE of Northern and Eastern Europe) does not admit Muggle-born students, so Muggle-borns who are born in the northern and eastern part of Central Europe are educated in Waltzburg.
Lmao
😲🧡🤣
I believe the other two schools also accepted both boys and girls. It is just the movies that you only see one or the other
Beauxbatons and Durmstrang are both for boys and girls in the books.
@@ConstanzaRigazio Oh right. Thanks for letting me know!
My question is, how did he become Dumbledore's friend?!? Dumbledore was there at his trial! He knew he was a death eater. He might have given out his fellows but still!
How many Death Eaters from Durmstrang joined Voldemort?
Only Karkaroff as far as I know.
@@YellowBear-kx1ff What about Antonin Dolohov?
@@paulyb7267 I thought he went to Hogwarts
@@macwelch8599 I'm actually not too sure because Dolohov's magical education is unknown.
Last year I broke my leg and used these videos as a coping mechanism while I was stuck in my room, this year I got my heart broken horribly, and now I use these videos to cope and distract myself. The comfort your content brings is unreal and greatly appreciated🤎
1:59 basically Silence of The Lambs right there
Great TOPIC Bro! Nice work
Well it definitely makes sense that if Durmstrang valued the dark arts so much to actually have a former practicer of them would be so beneficial.
New video suggestion: Powers/duties/authority of the Minister of Magic. Just like authority figures (e.g. President/Prime Minister) in the muggle word have specific powers, i.e declaring states of emergencies, pardoning criminals, etc. I've always wondered what powers do the Minister of Magic have.
I haven't thought about this character much but your video got me thinking about it 🤔
" You seem to have given this a lot of thought Mad Eye!!!!!"
Goes back to what I said in a comment to one of your previous videos. Wizard injustice is very malleable.
You should do a video on what if Harry and Draco became friends in their first year at Hogwarts
Idk if it was just in the film, but I love how Karkarov tells fake Moody, “You seem to have put a fair bit of thought into this, Mad-Eye.” And “Mad-Eye” seemed to have some emphasis on it. I doubt Karkarof knew that it was Crouch Jr but he knew something was sketchy with the way fake Moody was talking about how Harry allegedly put his name in the Goblet.
He likely knew of Malfoy as a death eater and used his friendship to gain the position, also may have supported Malfoy for new lord
Would the first Wizarding war be different or the same if Tom riddle went to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts ?
Great question and explanation!
Great work you always provide good insight.
You know Karkaroff is a death eater when Durmstrang sits with Slytherin.
I don’t understand why Dumbledore refers him as a friend.
Love your content man
I think he was a coward and he definitely used his position to abuse his students.
IMO I think Durmstrang would eventually run into the same problems the whole dark arts thing is. At worst a civil war in whatever nation they are in.
I'm curious what the unforgivable curses only against the law in Britain or was that the entire Wizarding World
1st upload since the Longbottom video..welcome back Dean/hru?
Exactly how many death eaters are there in the wizarding world
been waiting for copyright claims to be released for over a week..never takes this long ever
0:44 - I only just realised that Karkaroff had his hand on Neville Longbottom's shoulder, despite them having no relationship whatsoever. Neville was probably thinking 'Why are you doing this?' That's a red flag about Karkaroff's manners on its own.
1:40 - Not sure I'd agree there though. Since we don't know how many people Karkaroff killed. Or if he even killed anyone. Unless there's proof that he killed anyone, I'm inclined to believe that he only tortured. Also Karkaroff put a bunch of Death Eaters in Azkaban in his place in order for him to be released. It wasn't just one or two Death Eaters.
one theory you could do is how they tracked igor down did someone give away where he was, was the dark mark also a way to track someone???
If Voldemort could track the Dark Mark you'd think he wouldn't have lasted a whole year. Or maybe he just wasn't a high priority?
Voldemort was smart but lazier than Lyman Cutlar.
He was an awful headmaster.
You really don’t know how the justice system works then. If a criminal has information that could put a stop to a more dangerous criminal or even a criminal group, that man gets put into the witness protection programme or walks free after a while and is free of all charges.
I wonder how different Voldemort would have turned out if he went to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts.
I agree with Draco on dermstrang until goblet of fire no one knows why they need the class just that they need it.
Karkaroff being a death eater really never made sense to me. Voldemort only seemed to care about Britain and Irelaned, so why did some random wizard from Eastern Europe join up with him?
Because voldemort had global ambitions europe was probably his next target

could you explain in a video what a prophecy is and what it does💯
0:50 look at where his hand LOL
SIMPLE awnser he killed the last headmaster
Dude, I'm not kidding. I legit thought about this topic 2 days ago. This is insane HAHAHAHAHA
How powerful you think if Draco did go to Durmstrang? And how would change the story of Harry Potter?
what was Lucius Malfoy's position in the ministry
If I can describe this man in one word it would be: opportunistic.
He basically did anything that would suit him the best.
Drumstrang emphasizes teaching the dark arts. If anything, Igor's a celebrity teacher for being a Death Eater.
At the end of the video there was film I have never seen. Is there a deleted scenes dvd that shows the deleted scenes of each movie?
0:52 he spits at dumbledore
Are these extra scenes fan made or part of the extended version of these movies?
0:10 what does igor do in that scene very confused on this bit
QUESTION: why didn't voldemort set Bouty Crouch Jr. free?
When?
He was already brain dead from a dementors kiss. Releasing him won’t do nothing.
I’m sure since Hogwarts is located in Britain (where the first wizarding war primarily took place ) they would be least likely to employ anyone ever convicted of crimes or served time in Azkaban in relation to Voldemort . Since Durmstrang is located much further East in Europe they probably had much less of a distaste for someone like Igor plus the fact his convictions were overturned.
They did that with Sammy the bull lol
Nice reference to American serial killers.
How could four wizards not be able to heal a stab wound even without dittany
So they were just a bunch of muggle haters, that sounds about right.
No, I think that your points are dead on about Karkoff, or at least they make cents to me
A bully to the children, a chicken to the aurors and to Voldemort
If Draco went to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts, maybe he would’ve actually been able to fight and back up his trash talk, instead of just being a loud mouth that gets one shot by Hermione
Why was it made public that he did .
Idk, how did SNAPE? Oh that's right, corruption!
Justice should be equal for all

Been watching Mr ballen
Proud of you 👏💛❤💓💙♥
Who was he related to
Easy: bad school and bad headmaster
Lucky man, Karkaroff, shame Voldemort killed him.
This guy pulled a henry hill
igor karkaroff was under probation by ministry after he ratted out Augustus Rookwood and Barty Crouch Jr he wasn't really free. the ministry keep a hefty watch on him
Theory makes sense
What was his childhood like 😳😂😢
How is Durmstrang allowed to teach Dark Arts.
They must be considered a private wizard school compared to Hogwarts as a public wizard school
