"So today we're going to be talking about the treatment modality of Superficial Radiation to treat select non-melanoma skin cancers.
Now this is a wonderful treatment that's been around for a hundred years. And dermatologists used to use this procedure all the time. And then Mohs Surgery came around, and Mohs really has become the standard of care for most non-melanoma skin cancers.
However, superficial radiation still has a place. And superficial radiation treats a localized area that has a non-melanoma skin cancer in a fashion that's very different from the radiation that's typically delivered in hospitals for internal cancers. So if you think about it, if we have just a superficial cancer here, we do not need a radiation source that will go all the way through the hand. All we need is a radiation source that can treat the superficial portion of this, and hence superficial radiation in dermatology..."

Hi, If you don't have a way to determine if the margins are clear, how to you know if the treatment has actually worked?

@@anne-mp5cy hi, no it was basal cell cancer and couldn't be removed without major surgery and also skin grafts to follow so the dermatology surgeon recommended this option...it was a long haul of 6 weeks...5 times weekly...but so glad it is over and cancers are gone...there was also one next to my eye that received radiation.

I'm getting 3 SRT treatments, at the same scheduled visit, for basal cell cancer. Locations are forehead and each side of my nose. Leaded nose plugs and leaded eye patch are used every time. However, no leaded shield is being used at the treatment sites. Should a leaded shield be used during my treatments?

I am concern with he after effect, is the skin a different color? I have a basal cell on the tip of my nose. It was a pimple and now you can hardly see it, bu the biopsy showed different. I had this pimple for 6 weeks. Can't choose SRT100 or surgery. I don't want my skin to be a different color on the tip ....if temporary OK. Please advise
