I grew up listening to the Blackwood Brothers. They were at my church in No. Hollywood for several days in around 1967! My favorite quartet of all time!
And I have to say, Heaven's choir is going to be FULL of FUN and laughing, cutting up. These guys loved to have a great time serving the Lord. That will never change. Hallelujah!
Terrific voices, especially at their ages. At the time of this performance their ages were ... Bill Shaw, 66 James Blackwood, 71 Cecil Blackwood, 56 JD Sumner, 66
Back in the day....i went to every qt. Sing in Tampa Florida... I had a Qt. The Echo Aires in Tampa and we had the privilege of seeing you on stage when the blackwoods and en the Statesmen were there. What a Joy to stand by JD and sing bass on 2 songs. WOW what memories!!
How wonderful, I saw this same group in 1952 at Brooks stadium in Paducah KY. I was 8 yr. Old. they were superstars to us. They sang until 3 am .thanks for making this available.
I just discovered that Jack died on August 27, 2018. He lived across the street from me in Memphis in the 50's/60's and the Blackwood Brothers' tour bus would occasionally pull up for a visit and probably rehearsal at his home. Good memories! www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/tuscaloosa-al/jack-marshall-7974238
The BEST Quartet EVER in Gospel Music is James Blackwood and the Blackwood Brothers Quartet with this personnel!!! I have been listening to them for well over fifty years!!
+Larry DeWein I cannot agree with you more! I also started listening to them round about 1959, on their LP record "The Old Country Church", and still enjoy them. And of course, the late JD Sumner was a remarkable "phenomenon" - his voice was remarkable, and so his sense of humour.
+Larry DeWein ne of the greatest for sure. I also like the Chuck Wagon Gang, The Gaither Crew, and Statesmen, and , uh, yes, many more just turn me inside out and lift up and recharge my spirit and all I can do is , well, just praise God for His great creation, and making man in His image? Just thought how God would sound? I wonder how much the angels in heaven enjoy and how the Lord appreciates all the JOYFUL NOISE and beautiful!
Totally Marvelous. This concert brought back so many precious memories of going to the All night singings and being blessed as a teenager by the great Blackwood Brothers Quartet. Thanks for posting.
J.D is so inspirational. I love his voice and the personality he had. May all the Blackwood Brothers rest in peace. Too bad I never got to see them in person, they died before I was old enough to know who they were. : ( But their memory lives on through me and I'll make sure to allow them to live on through me.
I miss him so. Went to hundreds of their concerts in Tampa and the surrounding Florida cities. JD Sumner was my idle at that time as I was bass in my qt. The Echo-Aires and he was definitely one to look up to!

It's hard to believe they are all gone now. as in the last year we just lost Bill Shaw and Jackie Marshall. They are reunited in Heaven.
So sad they are all gone now.

What a voice J.D. had! Never been another like him! He was also one of the funniest people ever! What a character!
The criminally underrated Bill Shaw on tenor.
Loved hearing him sing.

+Larry DeWein Agreed. This was the best lineup.

"He that tooteth his own horn, the same shall not be tooted unto him."--JD Summer's theory according to James Blackwood. LOL!
I miss him so. Went to hundreds of their concerts in Tampa and the surrounding Florida cities. JD Sumner was my idle at that time as I was bass in my qt. The Echo-Aires and he was definitely one to look up to!

Great , sure miss James and J.D
They were the best
As much as I enjoyed the Blackwood Brothers Quartet I enjoyed the piano playing of Jackie Marshal equally well.
Tonight Bill Shaw has joined the other heroes of the faith and singing in glory he passed on September 7 2018
. He was a great singer he really made those high notes scream out loud.
I used to go to sleep with a stack of Blackwood brothers and Statesmen quartet and Rebels quartet record on my record player that played all night long
The best.
much later in the 1970s i guest they change their name and they also sung with Elvis in some of his songs.
Charlie Rogers Music that was J. D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet that sang backup with Elvis. The Blackwood Brothers never changed their name, or sang backup for Elvis.
Awesome!
Does anyone have. Recording of JACKIE MARSHALL playing UNDER THE DOUBLE EAGLE it was his very best?
I heard jd when theycame to boutwell aud in bham and he had the rafters vibrating
I know Bill Shaw, James BLACKWOOD, CECIL BLACKWOOD, J.D. SUMMER'S but who is the pianist?? Oh i didnt recognise JACKIE love him and wished i had a record of UNDER THE DOUBLE EAGLE
Does anyone have a record tape of JACKIE MARSHALL playing UNDER THE DOUBLE EAGAL? IT WAS HIS BEST I think
Is that JD's secret to hitting those extremely low notes- putting his hand to his ear?
It doesn't make him lower, but it helps him hear himself better to make sure he's on pitch
@@conrar1320 Exactly! The low notes come from very long vocal chords!👍✌
Is it just me or does J.D. appear to be inebriated? Imo Big John Hall had a voice that harmonized best with the group.
Yes, that was his secret. He could hear what his notes sounded like.
@@ronposey9974 it's just you. What a rude thing to say.
epic
can anyone tell me who the pianist was/is..?
That was Jackie Marshall who played for the Blackwood Brothers back in the 1950's.
“Peckerwood”?
I had to look it up cause I knew it wouldn't mean what we would think today. It was a contemptuous term referring to a rural white southerner..
