The reason The Rolling Stones are so popular is not because they have the best guitarist, best vocalist, the best drummer, but they because they are the most entertaining. Always enjoy what they are doing and that energy transfer to the listeners.
All I can say is that after all these years, they still sound like the Rolling Stones and if you can keep doing that for as long as they have, god bless them!

Yess, please! Do more videos like this! What about some less known songs where the harmonica wasn't in the center but made a huge difference? Most teachers only talk about blues (which is great!), but you could show us some other genre examples, like folk, jazz, celtic, classical, etc.
This series is brilliant. Besides the cues into what to "hear" in a tune, I appreciate your generous perspective with whoever is performing. Thank you, again.

Nice to have your perspective on this track. Mick is playing all that needs to be played..and the audience are not made up of " Pro " harp players. They just dig it, and it sells records too. Compared with today's very best harp playing community, these "less than great" ( my choice of phrase " ) harmonica players are all loaded ££££$$$$. The audience don't know about bends, and overblows..et al .That's my take on the scene. Thanks Tomlin, I like these conversations.🎼❤️🙏🎼
Very interesting and yes please to more of your reactions - Jagger has such a good feel for the music and really good to see Charlie Watts on the drums. What a good rhythm section he was with Bill Wyman.
Neither Keef or Charlie are playing complicated licks either, right? The Stones are all about feel and groove and texture, grittiness. As you point out Tomlin, the harp is a textural instrument. I think Mick is an underrated harp player. It’s his musicality that brings it home. Fun commentary!

I love the way Mick plays harp with the Stones. Suits the grooves perfectly. Midnight Rambler on the Ya Yas live album is a case in point.

Thanks Tomlin. Great presentation. Mick Jagger is an object lesson to just about all of us open mic night-level players. As you say he isn't the world's best harper but he knows the genre so well and his choices of licks makes the performance very musical. Why you've gotta love the Rolling Stones!
I agree with you, the song really sounds great. The video with its shots of Chicago does a nice job of evoking a sense of where this music is rooted. And I really appreciate your pointing out that Mick Jagger is playing some pretty simple riffs, yet managing to add something essential to the song. It wouldn't be the same without it. Sometimes less is more.
I really enjoyed this video. You kept saying that they're very simple licks, so it would be easy to tab them out, even if you do it in the dialog. All us amateurs appreciate all the help you generously share to get us on the right track. Keep up the good work!
More and MORE PLEASE... it is both entertaining, encouraging, interesting and it's what music is all about "INDIVIDUALITY" I was lucky enough to see all the bluesmen/women that came to the UK back in the sixties and every one of them had something musically to say from Son House to Sonny Boy Williamson...your summing up of Mick Jagger is spot on, however, I thing you could have played up his individuality more and made a much more expanded play on the whole point. Thank so much for everything you do.

Thanks Tomlin, as one of your students who considers himself as an intermediate player, I needed that reminder. "Rythm and note choices" are soooo important to the listener. As I progress I have a tendency to overcomplicate my licks sometimes. But expressing ourself with simple but yet musical and appropriate licks is very effectif. Hat's off to Mister Jagger and thanks to you Tomlin for the video.

Thanks for doing this Tomlin. Suggestions for future reviews: 1.) "Magnolia" a cut from my #1 favorite album of all time, J.J.Cale's "Naturally". Another: The Eagles "Doolin' Dalton". Neither by legendary harp players, but to my (untrained) ear-- the harp players add a lot and sound great. Curious what you think. Thanks again

It's hard to sound dirty and good at the same time. Mick's playing here reminds me of how Ozzy plays harp today--it's not "the best," but it has a lot of humanity.
In these series, perhaps you could touch a bit on the key of harp they're playing, position, etc. to help the beginners out there?

Most excellent. I always liked Micks harp work. I know he is not the GOAT but his playing adds quite a bit to the track. Keep up the "reaction" series. I wish the Stones would release more straight blues albums.
The repetitions are ecstatic. That's what makes the song. The harmonica does what is good for the song. It reminds me a bit of Kitty, Daisy & Lewis :)

Thanks for putting this up Tomlin, and for sharing your thoughts and opinion. I was given this album as a birthday present when it came out and I loved it from the first playing. I was just getting into harp playing at the time and Mick’s playing gave me a bit of inspiration to keep going with a view to simplifying my own efforts. It’s too easy to become the suck&blow speed freak with no musicality!! As BB King is quoted as saying, it’s not so much the notes that you play but more the ones that you leave out. He said it in terms of blues guitar playing but I guess it applies to all blues players whatever instrument that you play.
Yes please, more, more, more of these, they are very instructional and informative.
And as Keef famously said with a grin, it may be only 3 chords, but I REALLY like ‘em!

G’day from Australia- just stumbled across you and was wondering if I could humbly request for you to check out “Bow River” LIVE by Cold Chisel? The harmonica becomes the main instrument for a large part of the song and this is a ROCK song! It’s absolutely phenomenal and most people think he is using his harmonica with distortion of some sort. But I have no idea. It’s just amazing. Cold Chisel are the most successful rock band ever in Australia- forget INXS and AC/DC, these are the boys that Australia loved. Other reactors always comment on the harmonica saying they’ve never heard it played this way which is why I really want to hear your opinion!! ps. Do not watch the official version !! Watch the live one on the Channel Bruce Barber, the one with about 710K, this is our favourite version with the harmonica.
This is from a wonderful cd and they've got rhythm! You can hit all the right notes in all the right places but there's got to be 'depth' ad 'texture', as you say, to make it music to dance to and live by.
Yeah I got this album as soon as it came out lot of great chess record blues songs that are covered ... I believe they do about three little Walter covers on the album .....

These Britsh players were new to harmonic blues. The Yardbirds had backed up Sonny Boy Williamson's tour. He wanted the Brit boys to pick it up and play. Kieth Relf was the most active harp player in those years. What I think needs to be recognized is first, that the original black blues harp player did not play complex stuff. They engaged in a lot of "obsessive" repeat rythums as in "Boogie Chillen, etc. Later, black blues players became more complex. The Chicago players were always a bit ahead of everyone else. In the mean time white country and folk harp playing was very much a thing and more complex. Everyone improved over time. By the 70s, the James Cotton Blues Band of Chicago was great live. Magic Dick of the J Giels Band was amazing. Blind Owl of Canned Heat was a master of sublelty I learned to play by following along with Kieth Relf and these other people. BTW; John Lennon's harp in "Love Me Do" was also simple but very appealing..

I like these. There is digital work, but you can hear that in his voice, too. Curious if they let the “dirt” carry across from voice to harp with no changes. Keep these up.
I reached out with a recommendation a few weeks back. There is a fun video with Robin Williams playing blues on the harp. Curious if a teacher thought he knew what he was doing or not.
The Rolling Stones serve the song. They never overdo any of the instruments. The guitar is never overdone. The drums are never overdone. The vocals are never overdone.
The harmonica is no different.
It's not about shredding or showing off. It's about the song as a whole.
And the parts they do in all their songs are always good, whether they are complicated or not.

Tomlin, I'd be interested in your "reaction" to the harmonica playing (Mickey Raphael, I think) in The Highwaymen's version of City of New Orleans (ua-cam.com/video/RnGJ3KJri1g/v-deo.html). It's a straightforward riff but, for me, it adds so much to the depth of the song.
He also has decent tongue slap, unlike a lot of rock front men who dabble in harp. Not great, but at least he applies the technique.
I agree with your assessment, especially that perhaps more complicated licks perhaps would not have improved the song/recording. I enjoy these. How about a little King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, or The Murlocs? I'm a big Ambrose fan (he's a big influence on me taking up harmonica), and the music of both bands.

95% of listeners wouldn’t know good harp playing from bad. You could play them Kim Wilson next to Jagger and they’ll say Mick is great. Seems like the only real people that fully appreciate the skill are harp players. I don’t find it to be true of people listening to guitar and drums for example. Not that they are experts but many know good guitar and drums when they here it.
What are the tabs Mick is playing ?
